Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. EUROPEAN FOOTBALL - 26 May 1999 - (soccer) In the 1999 UEFA Champions League Final, Teddy Sheringham scored the goal that completed Manchester United's stoppage-time comeback against Bayern Munich.

Answer: False

Teddy Sheringham scored the equalizer, but Ole Gunnar Solskjær had the honor of putting Manchester United in front, after they had fallen behind in the sixth minute. Both goals came in additional time, which caused some issues for the official presenters as Bayern Munich ribbons had already been placed on the cup. Both players had come on as substitutes, in the 67th and 81st minutes respectively. Earlier that month Manchester United had won the FA Premier League title and the FA Cup; and this win created an unprecedented Treble of titles.
2. NCAA FOOTBALL - 20 November 1982 - (U.S. college football) California score a touchdown with time expired to snatch a victory against major rivals Stanford. Which instrument was being played by the band member that was struck by the touchdown scorer, Kevin Moen?

Answer: Trombone

Gary Tyrrell was the trombone player struck by Kevin Moen, who also caught the kickoff during the same play. It was a sad end to John Elway's college football career (as Stanford's quarterback), but he would go on to a much more successful NFL career, including two Super Bowl wins and nine Pro Bowl selections.
3. SAILING - 7 to 25 September 2013 - How many consecutive races did Oracle Team USA win to successfully defend the America's Cup in its 34th edition?

Answer: 8

Coming back from 8-1 down after 11 completed races (having 2 other wins negated due to being found guilty of cheating during the America's Cup World Series warmup event in 2012 for adding weight illegally), Oracle Team USA were able to win 9-8. Team New Zealand almost won 9-2, but with a big lead during the first race on September 20, they failed to finish the race within the 40 minute cutoff.
4. AMERICAN FOOTBALL - 26 November 26 1994 - (U.S. high school football) An estimated 20,000 fans turned up to watch the divisional high school semi-final between John Tyler and Plano East. With just over three minutes to go, John Tyler led 41-17. However, Plano East would make a comeback that garnered national attention. Which of the following is NOT true about what happened next?

Answer: A walk-off touchdown ended the game

Incredibly, Plano East managed to score four touchdowns in just over two minutes of game time, with the aid of three recovered onside kicks (in all three John Tyler touched the ball first but gave up possession). There was one last sting in the tail though - on the ensuing regular kickoff from Plano East, John Tyler ran the ball back for a 97-yard touchdown to retake the lead 48-44 after the extra point. Plano East had one final chance to win the game but the ball was intercepted on the drive's second play.
5. CRICKET - 16 to 21 July 1981 - During the Third Ashes Test in England at Headingley Stadium, England are forced to follow-on, still 227 runs behind after their first innings. The situation worsens as England falls to 7 for 135, requiring 92 runs just to avoid an innings defeat. Which batsman would then score 149 not out in a man-of-the-match performance, and which bowler would take 8 wickets whilst conceding only 43 runs, to lead England to a spectacular and highly unexpected victory?

Answer: Botham and Willis

Australia collapsed in their second innings, scoring just 111 and losing by 18 runs. In doing so, they became the first team in Test match history to lose after enforcing the follow-on in over 80 years. The 1981 Ashes series is frequently referred to as "Botham's Ashes" after man-of-the-match performances in 3 of the 6 tests, and England retained the Ashes winning the series 3-1.
6. BASEBALL - 12 to 20 October 2004 - The American League Championship Series was contested between the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox. Despite falling behind 3-0 down in the best-of-seven games series, the Red Sox were able to win the last four games and earn a place in the World Series. Such a feat is rare: when was the last time a team had managed to win after losing the first three games in the MLB playoffs?

Answer: Never

This was the first time that a team had managed this achievement (it has occurred in the NHL on a handful of occasions). The Red Sox would go on to sweep the World Series 4-0 against the St. Louis Cardinals and, having broken their 86-year drought, repeated their triumphs in 2007 and 2013.
7. FA PREMIER LEAGUE - 13 May 2012 - In the 38th and final match of the season, Manchester City played host to Queen's Park Rangers. As it turned out, they needed to win, but trailed 2-1 as the match entered its closing stages. Manchester City managed to equalize in the second minute of additional time, but who scored the winning goal with just seconds remaining, to secure their first English title since 1968?

Answer: Sergio Agüero

Agüero scored in the fourth minute of additional time, ending the hopes of their rival Manchester United's chances of the title, after they had won their final match mere seconds earlier against Sunderland, with United fans believing they had stolen the title as well.

It is interesting to note though, the scorer of Manchester City's first goal, Pablo Zabaleta, appeared in 21 of the 38 games that season, yet it was his only goal.
8. AMERICAN FOOTBALL - 3 January 1993 - (National Football League) The Buffalo Bills hosted the Houston Oilers in front of just over 75,000 fans in a Wild Card Playoff game. After a dismal first 30 minutes by the home team, the Bills would stage a miraculous fightback that would cause the game to be later dubbed simply "The Comeback". From how many points down did the Bills recover from to eventually win the game in overtime?

Answer: 32

The Bills came back from 35-3 down 2 minutes into the third period. It was the most points the Oilers had conceded all season (beating the 29 given up in Week 1 against Pittsburgh). Surprisingly for a playoff game, not all tickets had been sold, so those in the surrounding area weren't even able to watch it live due to a local blackout.

The Bills would later make it to Super Bowl XXVII (27), where they lost 52-17 to the Dallas Cowboys.
9. FORMULA 1 GP - 2 November 2008 - Who did Lewis Hamilton pass on the final lap of the Brazilian GP to regain the fifth place he needed to be 2008 World Champion?

Answer: Timo Glock

While most of the other drivers had pitted for Intermediate tyres with a handful of laps to go in gradually increasing rain, Glock stayed out on dry tyres. However, the rain became too much for him to handle on the final lap, and Glock ceded the position back to Hamilton.
10. HORSE RACING - 31 March 1973 - Most of the 1973 Grand National was dominated by Crisp, the horse being ridden by Richard Pitman, leading by up to 30 lengths at one point. Which opposing horse managed to bridge this gap and steal the win?

Answer: Red Rum

Even at the final fence, the lead was still 15 lengths. Unfortunately for Crisp, it was carrying by far the most weight (10kg more than the next heaviest jockey) and began to tire significantly, eventually losing to Red Rum by three quarters of a length. Red Rum would go on to win three Grand Nationals, the subsequent wins achieved in 1974 and 1977.
