Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who won the 1988 Melbourne Cup?

Answer: Empire Rose

Natski's tail went of the finish line before Rosey's, but the giant New Zealand mare's nose reached it first. Kensei and Tawrrific won the cup in 1987 and 1989 respectively.
2. Richmond won the VFL flag in 1980. What team did they beat in the Grand Final?

Answer: Collingwood

It was the middle year of three straight Grand Final losses for the Magpies. They lost to Carlton in the 1979 and 1981 Grand Finals.
3. Victoria won the Pura Cup (Sheffield Shield) in 2003-04. When was their previous triumph?

Answer: 1990-91

It had been Victoria's longest drought since they defeated New South Wales in 1990-91.
4. Which of these international runners did not filled a placing in the Melbourne Cup from 1994-2004?

Answer: Pugin

From 1998 to 2004, only 2000 (won by Brew) is the year that an international runner hasn't at least filled one of the placings. The highly fancied (15-2 chance) Pugin finished 18th in 2002 with Frankie Dettori on board.
5. Pat Cash won Wimbledon in what year?

Answer: 1987

Cash defeated Ivan Llendl 7-6 6-2 7-5 in the final. Llendl, ranked number one in the world from 1985-88, had lost in two Wimbledon semi's, a fourth round and the final in 1986 before going down to Cash again in 1987. In 1971, John Newcombe was the previous Australian winner.
6. If one of these teams won the 2005 premiership, which one would have had to have waited the longest?

Answer: Sydney Swans

The Sydney Swans (or South Melbourne as they were known) had not won a premiership since 1933. The Bulldogs won in 1954, Geelong was 1963, and Melbourne was 1964.
7. Which country defeated Australia in the 1996 final of the World Cup of cricket?

Answer: Sri Lanka

From 1996-2004, Australia won three of five World Cups in that period.
8. Which one of these sporting results did not take place in 2002?

Answer: Ethereal won the Melbourne Cup

It was Media Puzzle that won the Melbourne Cup in 2002. It will be a race remembered because Damian Oliver, the jockey, had lost his brother to a riding accident only days before. The Lions won back to back flags by defeating Collingwood, Hewitt become Australia's first Wimbledon winner since Pat Cash (1987) and the Roosters won a NRL season in a year stained by the disqualification of flag favourites Canterbury over salary cap breaches.
9. Bernie Quinlan was a champion Australian Rules Footballer. Which two teams did he play for?

Answer: Footscray and Fitzroy

Bernie Quinlan played 366 games and was known as Superboot. He won the league goalkicking on two occasions and won the 1981 Brownlow Medal.
10. Here are three events: Subzero wins the Melbourne Cup. The West Coast Eagles win the AFL premiership. Pakistan wins cricket's World Cup. In which year did these events occur?

Answer: 1992

They were all a little unique. Subzero was a grey, the AFL cup was leaving Victoria for the first time, and most Aussies were passionately barracking for Pakistan (they defeated England in the final).
