Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the jockey that rode New Zealand mare Sunline to many famous victories, including the Cox Plate in 1999 and 2000?

Answer: Greg Childs

In a television interview, Childs broke into tears as he explained that his children would go to school and tell their classmates that "Daddy rides the best horse in the world" for morning talk. Sunline also won the Hong Kong Mile in 2000.
2. How many VFL premierships did Hawthorn win during the 1980s?

Answer: Four

They played in an amazing seven straight grand finals from 1983 to 1989. They defeated Essendon in 1983, then lost to an unstoppable burst from Essendon in the final quarter of 1984. 1985 started with a giant brawl (again against Essendon) and finished with the Hawks going down by 78 points.

They defeated Carlton in 1986, but the Blues had their measure a year later in 1987. 1988 saw the Hawks thump Melbourne, and then in 1989 a brave Hawthorn (with many injured players) held off a fast finishing Geelong to win an epic contest by six points.
3. At what Test ground did Merv Hughes take a test hat-trick against the West Indies in 1988?

Answer: WACA (Perth)

It was a unique hat-trick. He dismissed Curtly Ambrose with the last ball of an over, and then Patrick Patterson with the first ball of his next to end the innings. He then went on to dismiss Gordon Greenidge with the first ball of the West Indian second innings. Merv didn't realise he had achieved the feat until Steve Waugh told him an over later.
4. Which of these Olympians did not win gold during the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics?

Answer: Gary Honey

Gary Honey won silver behind the American Carl Lewis in the Long Jump. The others were all great underdog victories. Jon Sieben won in the 200 metres butterfly beating the world record. Glynis Nunn won the heptathlon and Dean Lukin won in weightlifting.
5. Which horse was trainer Lee Freedman's first Melbourne Cup winner?

Answer: Tawrrific

Tawrrific (a 30-1 chance) won in 1989. His more fancied runner, Super Impose, came second that year and never won a Melbourne Cup. Subzero won the Cup in 1992 as did Doriemus in 1995.
6. North Melbourne and Collingwood played a draw in the VFL Grand Final of 1977. What was the result of the replay?

Answer: North Melbourne won by 27 points

North Melbourne led by six goals early just to have Collingwood get back within 11 points. Another burst from North Melbourne early in the third quarter put the game out of Collingwood's reach. This match featured Phil Manassa's famous long running goal.
7. In what year of the 1990s did Australia break a long drought to win the Frank Worrell cricket trophy in the Caribbean?

Answer: 1995

The Mark Taylor led Australian team was the first to achieve the feat since 1973. In the deciding test, the Windies were 1/103 in their first innings before being dismissed for 265. It was a 231 fourth wicket partnership from twins Mark and Steve Waugh, that many believed won the Australians the match and the series.
8. Kieren Perkins successfully defended his 1500 metre freestyle title at which Olympic Games?

Answer: Atlanta 1996

It was a remarkable victory. He just made the Australian swim team. He only scraped into the final by 0.23 of a second (the slowest qualifier). He was battling illness and yet came out, and led from start to finish, to defend his title from Barcelona 1992.
9. Who was awarded the Norm Smith Medal for being best on ground in the 1993 AFL Grand Final?

Answer: Michael Long

West Coast players' Matera and Kemp won the medal in 1992 and 1994 respectively, while although Williams played in the 1993 Grand Final, he waited another two years to win the medal as Carlton defeated Geelong in 1995. In 1993, Essendon's Michael Long played a terrific game highlighted by a long running goal early in the match.
10. Which horse won the 1997 Melbourne and Caulfield Cup double?

Answer: Might and Power

Saintly won the Melbourne Cup in 1996. Ethereal won the double in 2001. Doriemus won the double in 1995, and it was Doriemus that finished strongly but didn't quite catch the bold front running Might and Power in the 1997 Melbourne Cup. These two were also the first two home in the Caulfield Cup a few weeks earlier although the margin had been far greater.
