The Challenge Trophy is a domestic one-day competition held in English domestic cricket. The Ford Ranger Cup is also a one-day tournament at the domestic level, but is held in Australia. The Sheffield Shield is a tournament in which all matches are of four days, going from a round robin format to a final.

The KFC Twenty20 Big Bash is sponsored by Kentucky Fried Chicken, and each match has a Twenty20 format(each team bats 20 overs).
4. These prolific batsmen have all been great in their own way. Which one of them has not kept wickets at the domestic level?

Answer: Steve Waugh

Steve Waugh was purely a batsman. He started playing first class cricket at the beginning of the 1984-85 Australian domestic cricket season, moving from a fringe squad player to a first team regular, generally batting at No.3(a position he had even in the Australian national team). Both Martyn and Langer kept for their teams but very occasionally. Martyn played Test cricket from 1992 until 2006. Langer formed a fantastic opening partnership with Matthew Hayden until his retirement in 2007, replaced temporarily by Phillip Jaques. Gilchrist was a regular at keeping wickets, keeping for both his club and country tirelessley in the 16 years between 1992 and 2008.
5. Paul Reiffel was a great fast bowler for both his club, Victoria, and Australia. After retirement however, he took up another job within the domestic cricket circle. What was it?

Answer: He became a domestic cricket umpire in Australia

Indeed, he did continue with domestic cricket but as an umpire. He first made his domestic umpiring debut in the 2004-05 Australian domestic cricket leaugue. Reiffel also joined Cricket Australia's National Umpire Panel during the 2005/06 season, and later became a member International Cricket Council's International Panel of Umpires and Referees, making his international umpiring debut in 2009.
6. Apart from Mark and Steve Waugh, there was another Waugh (a brother of the twins) who became a domestic and list A player in Australia. What was his name?

Answer: Dean

His domestic career was rather dismal as he played only one match during the 1995/96 Sheffield Shield agianst Queensland and he played only 5 cricket matches at the List A level (a form of one-day cricket in which One-Day Interantionals and County level one-day matches fall but where friendly games or Twenty20 games do not fall).

In most countries, some form of List A cricket exists, ranging from 40 overs to 60 overs (In English domestic Cricket, for instance, there is a tournament called the Pro League in which each team bats 40 overs each).
7. Mark Waugh played his first-ever domestic match as an opener. Who did he open with?

Answer: Mark Taylor

The lucky youngster (nearing his 20th birthday) got to open with a future Australian national team captain. Mark Waugh was opening with Mark Taylor (who was to become captain in 1994 and hold that post until 1999 until he was succeeded by Ricky Ponting) in the 1984/85 Australian domestic cricket season against Tasmania at the TCA Ground in Hobart.

He scored only 13 and 28 in both of his innings.
8. South African cricketer Kepler Wessels adopted Australia as his home nation, and even played some Test matches for the Australian national team. For which state did he play at the domestic level in Australia?

Answer: Queensland

Kepler did play for Queensland for the seven years 1979-1986. South Africa were granted international Test status in 1889, but were banned indefinitely in 1970 following apartheid. South Africa could play international cricket once again(decision of the International Cricket Council) after apartheid was removed. Wessels, at the age of 34 led a virtually unknown South African side(in the 1992 Cricket World Cup) being the only player with Test and One-Day cricket experience.

He had played previously for Australia from his debut in the 1982/83 series against England to his retirement at the 1985/86 series against New Zealand, playing 40 Test matches for both countries.
9. "Sledging" (form of Australian verbal abuse on the cricket pitch) first originated at the domestic level in Australia. Which ground did it take place in?

Answer: Adelaide Oval

This is the first noted incident of sledging during a Sheffield Shield tournament in 1964. A player was said to have reacted "like a sledgehammer" by Ian Chappell, thus the coining of the term. This abuse however, is as old as cricket itself as players used to try to intimidate each other, to try to get the other player to collapse mentally. Australian fast bowler Merv Hughes was paticularly known for having a reputation for sledging.
10. He received a professional contract to play for Tasmania in 2000 at only 16 years of age. What is his name?

Answer: Tim Paine

Tim got the job for Tasmania at a very young age. He opened the batting for Tasmania in November 2005 against Western Australia in Perth, scoring a duck (a score of zero) in his first innings and 17 in the second innings, as the match was drawn.
