Bernard Tomic beat the 22nd seed Fernando Verdasco on Rod Laver Arena in five sets, 4-6 6-7 6-4 6-2 7-5. Tomic advanced all the way to the fourth round where he eventually succumbed to Roger Federer in straight sets, 6-4 6-2 6-2.

This was Azarenka's first Grand Slam title and this victory secured her the Number 1 Ranking. Novak Djokovic successfully defended his 2011 title with winning here in 2012.
