Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The only quarterfinal match that went to five sets was Roger Federer vs Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.

Answer: False

In his quarterfinal match, David Ferrer was also forced to a fifth set, coming from two sets to love to defeat countryman Nicolas Almagro. This match lasted 4 hours and 4 minutes, 10 minutes more than Federer's five set victory over Tsonga.
2. Novak Djokovic's three-set victory over David Ferrer in the semi-finals was the Serb's most lopsided match during the whole Australian Open (he conceded less games in that match that in any other of his macthes).

Answer: True

Djokovic dropped just five games in his semi-final match against Ferrer, with a 6-2 6-2 6-1 victory over the fourth seeded Spaniard. Djokovic converted all seven of his break point opportunities and dropped just seven points on serve. His second most lopsided match came in the second round, against Ryan Harrison, when Djokovic lost six games in a 6-1 6-2 6-3 victory.
3. Out of the 123 men's singles matches that didn't end with a retirement, there were more three-set matches than four-set and five-set macthes combined.

Answer: Yes

During the men's singles tournament, 30 matches went to five sets, 29 went to four sets and the 63 remaining macthes were done in straight sets. All four semi-finalists played at least one five-set match during their run at the 2013 Australian Open. Interestingly enough, Roger Federer had never played back-to-back five-set macthes before this tournament, where he beat Tsonga in five sets before losing to Murray in five sets as well.
4. In the fourth round, defending champion and number one seed Novak Djokovic edged out Stanislas Wawrinka in a five-set match. What was the score in the fifth set?

Answer: 12-10

Novak Djokovic showed once more that he is able to play his best tennis when he is very close to defeat. Wawrinka failed to serve out the second set for a two set to love lead despite holding a 30-0 advantage and, at 4-4 in the fifth set, Djokovic managed to save four break points that would've left Wawrinka serving for the match.
5. During the third round encounter between Gilles Simon and Gael Monfils, the longest rally of the tournament was played. How many strokes were in this point?

Answer: Between 70 and 80

Simon eventually took the 5-hour 3-minute encounter after winning 8-6 in the fifth set. This match featured the six longest rallies of the tournament and a total of 12 rallies with 32 or more strokes were played.
6. Four-time Australian Open titlist Roger Federer won all the six tiebreaks he played in the tournament. Which of the following scores was NOT the score of any of the tiebreaks he played?

Answer: 7-3

Federer won the second-set tiebreak 7-5 against Bernard Tomic in the third round. In the next round, the Swiss also played a tiebreak in the second set against Milos Raonic, which he won 7-4. This was also the score of both tiebreaks against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the quarterfinals. Finally, against Andy Murray, he took the second and fourth set tiebreaks with scores of 7-5 and 7-2 respectively.

After this grand slam tournament, Federer had won over 65% of the tiebreaks he had played in his incredible career.
7. In which round did the longest tiebreak of the 2013 Australian Open (in number of points played) take part?

Answer: Fourth round

The longest tiebreak was played in the fourth round match between Tomas Berdych and Kevin Anderson. Berdych took the third set tiebreak with a score of 15-13 to close out the match in straight sets. Prior to that match, the longest tiebreak had been played in the first round match between Florian Mayer and Rhyne Williams, with Mayer taking it 14-12.
8. Juan Martin Del Potro's third round loss to Jeremy Chardy was one of the biggest surprises of the Australian Open 2013. Chardy went on to the quarterfinals, where he lost to eventual finalist Andy Murray. But, who did Chardy defeat in the fourth round?

Answer: Seppi

Chardy beat italian Andreas Seppi in four sets, after dropping the first. The Frenchman saved 9 of the 11 break points he faced.
9. In the final between Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray, both players were unable to score a break until the eighth game of the third set. How many break point chances did they squander, combined, before Djokovic was finally able to break Murray?

Answer: 10

Djokovic missed a total of five break chances in the first set, while Murray was unable to convert a 0-40 lead in the first game of second set. The player who missed break point opportunities went on to lose the set in a tiebreak in both the first and second set.

In the eighth game of the third set, Djokovic set up a 0-40 lead, and eventually broke at 30-40 despite missing the first two chances.
10. Eventual champion Novak Djokovic did not drop serve in either his semi-final match against David Ferrer or in the final against Andy Murray. How many service games was Djokovic able to hold, consecutively, since he last dropped serve against Tomas Berdych in the quarterfinals?

Answer: 45

Djokovic won all of his 32 service games between the semi-final and final. Djokovic did not face a break point in any of his 11 servive games against Ferrer, and saved all four break points against Murray. In his four-set win against Berdych, the Serb did not drop serve since the first game of the second set, holding 13 times in a row from there.
