Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the first to win four Manager of the Year Awards?

Answer: Tony LaRussa

The others never managed in the Major Leagues. The Manager of the Year Award began in 1983 by the hands of the BBWAA. All the other managers retired decades earlier. LaRussa won the inaugural award in 1983 along with Tommy Lasorda of the Dodgers. Tony was at the helm of the White Sox.

His second award came in 1988 with the Oakland Athletics and would win his third award with them in 1992. LaRussa's fourth and final Manager of the Year Award came in 2002 at the podium of the St. Louis Cardinals.

He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2014 with his career 2728-2365 record over 33 seasons with the White Sox, Athletics, and Cardinals.
2. Which National Leaguer in 2012 hit for the cycle twice in less than two weeks?

Answer: Aaron Hill

The others were all retired long before. Hill was in his eighth season in 2012 and was an Arizona Diamondback second baseman. In a very hot month of June, Aaron batted for the cycle on the 18th against the Mariners in a 7-1 win, then again on the 29th in a 9-3 win against the Brewers.

In 2016, the Diamondbacks traded Hill to the Brewers, spent a little time with them, then the Brewers traded him to the Red Sox.
3. Which Boston Red Sox player set a Major League record for hitting safely 12 times in consecutive at-bats?

Answer: Pinky Higgins

None of the others ever played for the Red Sox. Higgins was a third baseman and played for the Tigers, Athletics, and Red Sox during his 1930-1946 career. In 1938 he had 12 consecutive hits over four games in the season. Pinky ended the season with a .303 batting average. Higgins went to two World Series and lost them both. He died in 1969 at the age of 59.
4. This future Hall of Famer and former St. Louis Cardinal was the first-ever designated-hitter for the Boston Red Sox. Who was this player nicknamed 'Baby Bull'?

Answer: Orlando Cepeda

The others never played for the Cardinals or Red Sox. In his 16th season and fifth team in 1973, Orlando showed up for Boston as a DH while all the other American League teams opened the season with the DH spot on April 6. Cepeda batted .289 and played in the DH spot for the entire season.

He won the Rookie of the Year Award with the Giants in 1958, then was runner-up to the NL MVP in 1961 to Frank Robinson of the Reds. While as a Cardinal he won the NL MVP in 1967 over teammate Tim McCarver. Orlando retired with the Red Sox after the 1974 season.

He was inducted into the Hall in 1999.
5. Who was the only manager elected to the Hall of Fame in the 1940s?

Answer: Wilbert Robinson

Wilbert beat all the others to the Hall by at least 20 seasons. Robinson played the game also from 1886-1902 as a catcher in over 1000 games as a catcher with four teams over 17 seasons. In his final season he was a player/manager with the Baltimore Orioles for his first taste of managing.

The Orioles finished in last place of eight teams in the American League. In 1914 he took over Brooklyn and renamed them the Robins. He kept the reins of the team until 1931 while winning two NL pennants in 1916 and 1920. Nicknamed 'Uncle Robbie', he was inducted into the Hall in 1945. Huggins was inducted into the Hall in 1964, Stengel in 1966, and Alston in 1983.
6. The St. Louis Browns didn't have too many highlights over their 50+ seasons in the American League. One highlight was the franchise's fourth no-hitter by a pitcher who stayed around for only three months in baseball. Who was this pitcher?

Answer: Bobo Holloman

The others never pitched for the Browns. The right-hander Holloman debuted on April 18, 1953 in one of the Browns' worst seasons. Three weeks later he threw a no-hitter against the Philadelphia Athletics on May 6 in a 6-0 win. Bobo retired after only three months with his last game being on July 19.

He appeared in 22 games both as a starter and reliever in that time with his 3-7 career record. The Browns finished the season with a 54-100 record, 46.5 games behind the AL pennant-winning Yankees.

The other three pitchers to throw a no-hitter for the Browns were Bob Groom, Earl Hamilton, and Ernie Koob. Amazingly enough, both Groom and Koob threw one each in back-to-back no-hitters on May 5 and May 6, 1917 against the White Sox.
7. The Chicago Cubs' National League franchise began as the Chicago White Stockings in the first season of the National League in 1876. They played in many home ballparks since their NL inception. In 1916 they played their first game in their new ballpark (renamed Wrigley Field in 1927). What was the name of Wrigley Field from 1920 to 1926?

Answer: Cubs Park

The White Stockings began their National League endeavors in 1876 at State Street Grounds for two seasons in 1876-1877. They moved to Lakefront Park from 1878-1884. From there it was on to Westside Park, Brotherhood Park, and Weegham Park in 1916, renamed Cubs Park in 1920.

It was renamed Wrigley Field in 1927. The Cubs made their first World Series appearance at Wrigley in 1932 against the Yankees. This was the World Series that Babe Ruth allegedly called his home run shot.
8. Which Hall of Fame pitcher set a World Series career record by striking out 94 batters in more than 10 World Series?

Answer: Whitey Ford

The other pitching greats appeared in no more than four World Series while Ford appeared in 11 with the Yankees. Whitey had a career World Series win-loss record of 10-8 while the Yankees won six titles. Ford was a career Yankee in the 1950s and 1960s.

His biggest World Series was a 16-strikeout performance in the 1958 series and a title against the Milwaukee Braves. In 1955 he struck out 10 Dodgers in a World Series title loss. In 1962 he struck out 12 San Francisco Giants in a Yankee World Series crown.
9. The New York Mets were an expansion team and began their NL endeavors in 1962. Who was their first player, a pitcher, to wear the unlucky number 13 on his jersey?

Answer: Roger Craig

The others never pitched or even played for the Mets. Craig was unlucky in the first place. He was a mediocre pitcher in seven seasons with the Dodgers before being drafted by the Mets in the expansion draft. In his first season with the Mets in 1962 he went 10-24. If that wasn't bad enough, he went 5-22 in 1963.

The Mets lost 100+ games in a season both times. He was traded by the Mets to the Cardinals for the 1964 season, then pitched for the Reds and Phillies before he retired in 1966 with a 74-98 career record.
10. Which of these American Leaguers won the Chalmers Award?

Answer: Eddie Collins

The Chalmers Award was the prelude to the Most Valuable Player Award which both leagues adopted rules for the new MVP in 1931. The first Chalmers Award was given to Detroit Tiger Ty Cobb in 1911. Chalmers was a Detroit-based automotive company. The Chalmers' winner received a new Chalmers car which Ty Cobb had already owned but accepted it anyway.

There were only four Chalmers Awards presented and it stopped after the 1914 season due to corruption allegations. The other two winners of the AL award were Walter Johnson and Tris Speaker.

The Chalmers Award was also given out to the MVP of the NL also from 1911-1914. Those deserving players were Frank Schulte, Larry Doyle, Jake Daubert, and Johnny Evers.
