Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the first New York Yankee to receive a Rookie of the Year Award?

Answer: Gil McDougald

The Rookie of the Year Award began in 1947, long after the others listed, retired from the game. McDougald won it in 1951, by batting .306, and smacking 123 hits. This utility infielder played for 10 seasons, all with the New York club. He helped the Yankees to 8 World Series.
2. How many Chicago White Sox players, hit 25 or more home runs in 2002?

Answer: 5

Unique to baseball, there were 5 sluggers who reached the 25 mark. Magglio Ordonez led the club with 38, followed by the DH Frank Thomas with 28, Paul Konerko with 27, Carlos Lee with 26, and Jose Valentin had 25. The White Sox could only muster a 81-81 record with all these sluggers.
3. I played for 21 seasons, all with one team in my career. I was fortunate to appear in 2 World Series, and won one of them. I led the league in batting 3 times, won 1 MVP, and 1 Gold Glove. I am also remembered for a 'sticky situation' that I was in. Who am I?

Answer: George Brett

Brett played his entire career with the Royals of Kansas City. He was also a 12 time All-Star. The sticky situtation was the pine tar incident on his bat, that showed him charging the umpire after the umpire ejected him and the bat from a game.
4. Who was the first Brooklyn/Los Angeles Dodger in the 20th century, to hit 50 home runs in a season?

Answer: Nobody did it

The only 2 two players to hit 60 in the century were Babe Ruth and Roger Maris. In 2001, Shawn Green set a team record by smacking 49 for the club, and almost being the first Dodger to hit 50 in franchise history.
5. What team was skunked 4 games to 0, in the 1939 World Series?

Answer: Cincinnati Reds

The Yankees slated the Reds in 1939. It was not a difficult task with the Yankees roster of Dickey, Crossetti, DiMaggio, and Red Ruffing. This was also Lou Gehrig's final season of baseball. The Braves and Mets did not exist in 1939.
6. What team did the St. Louis Browns become in 1954?

Answer: Baltimore Orioles

None of the other teams existed in 1954. From the Browns in 1953, to the Orioles in 1954, both seasons ended up with the same record of 54-100. It would be 12 years before the Orioles made to a World Series, and they won big in 1966, by skunking the Dodgers in 4 games.
7. Who was the first pitcher to win 30 games in a season in the 20th century?

Answer: Cy Young

Young won 33 in 1901, 10 years earlier than the others. In Young's first season after being traded from the St.Louis Cardinals, he won 33 with the Boston Americans. The team changed its name to the Somersets in 1902, then the Pilgrims in 1903, who won the first World Series.
8. What manager led the Minnesota Twins to their first World Series appearance?

Answer: Sam Mele

After becoming the Twins in 1961, they waited 4 seasons under the guidance of Sam Mele to make it to the promised land. Unfortunately, the Dodgers beat them 4 games to 3, with the arms of Sandy Koufax and Don Drysdale. Bucky Harris took the pre-Twins, the Washington Senators, to a World Series crown in 1924.
9. Who was the 2002 All-Star game MVP?

Answer: Nobody

In a slap in the face for baseball, Commissioner Bud Selig called the game after it was tied. There was no MVP. The All-Star MVP Award began in 1962, with 2 Los Angeles players sharing the award. The Dodgers' Maury Wills, and the Angels' Leon Wagner split the title.
10. What team did Sammy Sosa begin his Major League career with?

Answer: Texas Rangers

He shared his first season with the Rangers of Texas and then the Chicago White Sox in 1989. After 2 more seasons with the White Sox, Sammy found himself in a Cubs uniform in 1992. Still a Cub in 2002, he smacked 49 for the Cubbies.
