Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In what year did the Kansas Athletics become the Oakland Athletics?

Answer: 1968

Kansas City had the franchise from 1955-1967 until they moved to Oakland. They were 82-80 and finished 6th in their division under the helm of Bob Kennedy.
2. What position did Steve Garvey play during his first four seasons to start his baseball career?

Answer: Third Base

It started in 1969 with appearing in only 3 games with the Dodgers that year. In 1973 they moved him to first base because of his erratic throwing arm. His problem was traced to a shoulder seperation that he received while playing football with Michigan State in college. The rest is history. He retired after 19 seasons.
3. How many seasons did Phil Niekro play in the Major Leagues?

Answer: 24

The resilient right hander started his career with the Braves organization in 1964. In 1984 he went to the Yankees. He retired as a Brave in 1987 with a career win-loss record of 318-274.
4. How many pennants did the Philadelphia Phillies win under the guidance of manager Jack Coombs?

Answer: 0

Coombs managed only one year in his career. This was in 1919 when Philadelphia finished 8th in their division. His season was 18-44 before he was replaced.
5. What was the New York Mets win-loss record in their inaugural year in 1962?

Answer: 40-120

The Mets finished a dismal 10th place in the standings that year. This was unfortunate for manager Casey Stengel. Casey stayed with the team for 3 more seasons, and in each season they again finished in 10th place with him at the helm.
