Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When we think of baseball player injuries, we typically think of spraining an ankle, breaking a wrist, or a player getting a line drive in the noggin. We tend not to think that a player could injure themselves with an unusual object. Which of the following players did not severely injure themselves with an unusual object?

Answer: Rickey Henderson

Rickey Henderson was one of the fortunate ones. The head first, knee skinning, base stealing outfielder managed to go unscathed when it came to unusual stabbing incidences. For the other three, however, their match with stabbing was the least of their worries.

Sheer embarrassment must have hit them the next time they walked into the dressing room. Adam Eaton, pitcher for the San Diego Padres, had a sudden urge to open up a CD wrapper while using a knife. Unfortunately for him, he stabbed himself right in the stomach. Oddibe McDowell, a Texas Rangers outfielder, also fell victim to the knife.

While buttering a bread roll during a team function, he managed to slice his hand. Hats off, however, goes to Matt Wise who had to miss time during the 2006 regular season after slicing his middle finger.

The culprit? A lousy pair of salad tongs.
2. Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Steve Sparks once had the bizarre incident of injuring himself with which of the following?

Answer: A telephone book

In 1994, Steve Sparks tried to imitate a trick he saw during a motivational spring training seminar. He attempted to rip apart an entire phone book in half, however, he didn't seem to know the trick. The final result? A dislocation in his non-pitching shoulder.
3. In 1990, Kevin Mitchell of the San Francisco Giants, showed up late for spring training after eating which of the following?

Answer: A doughnut

Mitchell sustained a variety of unusual injuries during his baseball career, including an accidental rubbing alcohol eye wash incident and injuring himself after coming down with a case of food poisoning. His most unusual injury, however, was discovered after he arrived four days late for spring training.

After microwaving a frozen doughnut for too long, it became hard as a rock. Mitchell, unaware of this, bit into the doughnut and required an emergency root canal, thus, forcing him to miss the first four days of training.
4. Food poisoning is a nightmare for anyone. Just ask Tom Glavine while playing for the Atlanta Braves. Which of the following locations did Glavine sustain a severe bout with food poisoning and eventually praying to the porcelain god?

Answer: On an airplane

Glavine sustained a severe bout with food poisoning after ordering some bad airline food. The severe vomiting caused the Atlanta Braves pitcher to break some ribs. Being the tough player he was, rather than miss his next start, he was given a pain-killing injection and played on.
5. A player's protective cup is supposed to do just that, protect! Which of the following players, found himself injured at the hands of the dreaded "jock-strap"?

Answer: Ken Griffey Jr.

After suffering an abdominal strain while with the Cincinatti Reds, Griffey best described his pain as something one would feel after injuring themselves with a protective cup. Griffey, of course, was no stranger to this phenomenon as he had previously pinched his "private" area and was forced to miss a game due to the nature of his injury.
6. Detroit Tiger medical staff determined that the cause of Joel Zumaya's strained arm during the 2006 regular season was due to what?

Answer: Excessive video game playing

Unfortunately for Joel Zumaya, playing the popular video game "Guitar Hero" turned out to be the cause of his strained forearm during the 2006 MLB season. Zumaya, however, did not believe the criticism from his trainers and continued to play his favorite video game during the 2007 season.

A freak incident happened once again during the 2007 season, however, but this time, it was due to wild fires near his parent's California home. While moving boxes during a rush move, he injured his shoulder.
7. Which of the following players broke his tailbone in a suspect venison incident?

Answer: Clint Barmes

Contrary to popular belief, Colorado Rockies infielder Clint Barmes did not break his collarbone while riding an ATV. Instead, he injured himself while carrying packages of deer meat. While on a trip to teammate Todd Helton's, he was carrying packages of deer meat up a set of stairs. Suddenly, Barmes fell down breaking his collarbone.

Unfortunately, these injuries were severe and required extensive surgical measures.
8. Thousands of people worldwide are victims of phobias. One such player was Glenallen Hill of the Toronto Blue Jays. Which of the following phobias did Hill have that caused him to injure himself?

Answer: Fear of spiders

Glenallen Hill was not afraid to admit that he had a severe case of Arachnophobia after injuring his elbows and toe during the 1990 MLB season. While sleeping, Hill had a severe nightmare in which he was trying to get away from spiders. Unfortunately for Hill, after he awoke from his dream, he had severe carpet burns on his body, and later reported to work on a pair of crutches.
9. In 1985, St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Vince Coleman fell prey to getting attacked by what just before a game?

Answer: A roll of field tarp

While minding his business just prior to Game 4 of the 1985 NLCS championship game, Vince Coleman was attacked by a roll of field tarp. Just before the game started, rain began to fall at Busch Stadium. Just as the rain began to fall, Coleman fell onto the field. Unexpectedly, the roll of tarp wrapped around his leg.

He was eventually rescued from the tarp, however, his knee was severely mangled and required season ending surgery.
10. Houston Astros outfielder Hunter Pence sustained spring training injuries after mangling himself up with what?

Answer: A glass door

Pence sustained multiple injuries on his hands and knees after walking into a glass door while at his Florida apartment. Alcohol was not a factor. It just happened to be a freak accident. While using the washroom just prior to using his hot tub, he did not realize that a friend had closed the door behind him. Pence turned around and walked straight into the door.

He suffered multiple lacerations to his hands and knees.
