Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Blue Jays began the 1992 season with one of the deepest starting rotations in the major leagues, comprised of both veteran and developing talent, and long-time team members and recent additions. Who started the season opener?

Answer: Jack Morris

Morris came to the Blue Jays as a free agent during the off season after being instrumental in helping to eliminate them from the 1991 ALCS while playing for the Minnesota Twins. A two-time World Series champion, and the 1991 World Series MVP, Morris was signed largely for his ability to win in the postseason, something that had eluded the Blue Jays.

He went the distance on opening day in Detroit, leading the Blue Jays to a 4-2 win against his former team.
2. By August, injuries to the starting rotation prompted the Blue Jays to seek outside help. On August 27th, they acquired National League strikeout leader David Cone from the New York Mets. Who was the key player sent to New York in the trade for Cone?

Answer: Jeff Kent

Kent had had a strong rookie season up until that point with the Blue Jays, with most of his playing time coming as a replacement for an injured Kelly Grubber at 3rd base. He would play four strong seasons for the Mets as their starting 2nd baseman, and would go on to a distinguished career, including winning the 2000 National League MVP award. Also traded to New York for Cone was minor league outfielder Ryan Thompson.
3. How did Jack Morris make Blue Jays history in 1992?

Answer: He became the first Blue Jay to win 20 games in a season.

Bolstered by strong run support all season long, Morris went 21 and 6, besting Dave Stieb's team record of 18 wins, set in 1990. Uncharacteristically, his regular season success did not continue into the postseason. He would go 0 and 3 in four postseason starts, and would be the only Blue Jay starter to fail to win a game.
4. Dave Winfield made major league history in 1992 by becoming the oldest player to do what?

Answer: Drive in 100 runs

Winfield, who turned 41 on October 3rd, batted .290 with 26 home runs and 108 RBIs, making him the first 40 year old to reach the 100 RBI milestone. Signed to a one year deal to be the team's DH, Winfield added both a potent bat to the lineup and leadership in the clubhouse.

His production in 1992, as well as the World Series Championship, helped guarantee his eventual place in the Hall of Fame (inducted in 2001).
5. In the ALCS, the Blue Jays found themselves facing their long time nemesis the Oakland Athletics. The turning point in the series came in game 4 in Oakland when Roberto Alomar hit a two-run home run in the 9th inning, to tie the game after the Jays had trailed by five runs. Which Oakland pitcher gave up the home run?

Answer: Dennis Eckersley

Eckersley was the game's premier closer and eventual American League MVP in 1992, and he was without question the last pitcher you would want to face when trailing late in a game. He entered game 4 in the 8th inning with Oakland leading 6-2 with two runners on and two out, then took a 6-4 lead into the 9th. After Devon White led off with a triple, Alomar connected, taking Eckersley deep to right field, shocking the fans in attendance and exorcising the demons of Blue Jay postseason futility.
The Blue Jays would win the game 7-6 in the 11 innings, and the series in 6 games.
6. The 1992 World Series between the Blue Jays and the Atlanta Braves was historic in that it was the first World Series to involve a team based outside of the USA. This led to an uncomfortable incident in the pregame ceremony before game 2 in Atlanta. What happened?

Answer: The Canadian flag was flown upside down.

The US Marine Color Guard, who carried the flag, apologised afterward, claiming that it was an accidental mishap. They requested to carry the Canadian flag again before game three in Toronto, where they displayed it properly and were received graciously by fans at the first World Series game ever held on Canadian soil.
7. In the 4th inning of game 3 of the 1992 World Series (played in Toronto), with two runners on and nobody out for Atlanta, and Juan Guzman pitching to David Justice, the Blue Jays made arguably the most sensational defensive play in team history in a sequence often referred to as "the almost triple play." Who made the remarkable defensive catch to start the play?

Answer: Devon White

Justice hit a line drive to center field which White ran down with a leaping catch on the warning track. Terry Pendleton, who was on first base, ran past Dion Sanders who held up at second, resulting in an automatic out. Not realizing that Pendelton had been called out, the throw went back to first base, which prompted Sanders to try for third.

The Blue Jays caught him in a run down between 2nd and 3rd, but Sanders was called safe after Kelly Gruber attempted to apply a diving tag to Sander's leg. Second base umpire Bob Davidson admitted after seeing replays that he probably blew the call, denying the Blue Jays what would have been only the second triple play in World Series history. The Jays would win game 3 3-2, and would take a 2-1 series lead into game 4.
8. The World Series clinching run was scored in the top of the 11th inning of game six in Atlanta, when Dave Winfield connected off of Charlie Leibrandt's pitch with two runners on and two out. What did Winfield hit?

Answer: A double up the leftfield line

Both Devon White and Roberto Alomar, who were on second and first respectively, scored on the play giving the Blue Jays a 4-2 lead. The Braves would rally in the bottom of the inning, but the Jays would hold on for a 4-3 game 6 win, and a 4-2 series win for their first ever World Championship.
9. Who got the World Series clinching save?

Answer: Mike Timlin

When Blue Jays closer Tom Henke took the mound with a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the 9th in game 6, the Blue Jays bullpen had not blown a save in over three months nor allowed a single earned run in the postseason up until that point. However, the Braves came up with their most clutch rally of the series, tying the game and setting the stage for a dramatic extra inning finish. In the bottom of the 11th, with the Blue Jays leading 4-3 with two out and the tying run on 3rd base, Blue Jays manager Cito Gaston made the surprising decision to pull veteran pitcher Jimmy Key from the game in favor of the rookie Timlin.

The move payed off, as Timlin fielded an Otis Nixon bunt perfectly for the final out of the series, earning him the biggest save in Blue Jay history.
10. Who was awarded 1992 World Series MVP?

Answer: Pat Borders

Borders, whose status as the team's starting catcher had been in question before the season began, was by far the Jays strongest hitter in the series, batting .450 with a home run and 3 RBIs. Though he did not completely overcome his Achilles' Heel of not being able to hold runners on base, he came up with a handful of clutch defensive plays during the series.
The ALCS MVP award was won by Roberto Alomar.
