Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. On their very first pairing, Bourne and Kraatz won the Junior Canadian Ice Dance Championship. Can you tell me what year that was in?

Answer: 1992

Since then they have won several National and World medals. They first came together as a team in 1991.
2. Victor Kraatz had already won a Junior Ice Dance Championship for another country. Which country did he skate for prior to moving to Canada?

Answer: Switzerland

Victor moved to Canada searching for a new partner. His original ice dance partner sustained an injury, which left him without a partner capable of matching his skills, so he desperately needed to find a replacement.
3. In 1993, Bourne and Kraatz won their first gold medal at the Canadian National Senior competition on their very first try. Can you tell me from whom who they took the 1992 title?

Answer: Jacqueline Petr/Mark Janoschak

Though Victor was always an ice dancer, Shae-Lynn started out as a pairs skater originally. When the two met it was to be a partnership of astonishing achievement. They were the first North American ice dance team to win a Gold Medal at the Wolrd Figure Skating Championships in 2003.
4. What was unique about Bourne and Kraatz was the quality of their deep edges. They were the first team to perfect a specific move. Can you tell me the name of this unique move?

Answer: hydroblading

Hydroblading is gliding on deep edges with the bodies stretched in a very low position that is almost parallel to the ice. The coach they worked with to get this technique was Uschi Keszler. She had also worked with Canadian Silver Olympic Medalist Elvis Stojko during that skater's sterling career.
5. Bourne and Kraatz had several coaches over the years compared to most skaters. In 1996, they won a bronze medal at the World Championships for the very first time. They followed this up with three subsequent bronze medals until 1999. Can you tell me who their primary coach was during these years?

Answer: Natalia Dubova

Bourne and Kraatz had been criticized for switching coaches so many times, but they felt it was necessary to keep them fresh due to the slow movement up the rankings in ice dance. Up until then, the skill had been mostly Soviet dominated.
6. During their amateur career, Bourne and Kraatz performed an innovative dance at the 1999 Worlds Championship, the likes of which had never been done before. They nicknamed this dance the "Heart Attack" due to its high energy level. Can you tell me which famous ice skating duo choreographed this program for them?

Answer: Torvill & Dean

Ice dance was traditionally Russian dominated and theatrical with balletic music until then. The program Bourne and Kraatz presented was highly energetic and innovative, but not always popular with some of the more conservative
judges, who most definitely preferred the more familiar format which had always been used.
7. In preparation for the 1998 Nagano Olympics, Bourne and Kraatz came up with this signature dance with its outstanding footwork for which they will be forever remembered. Can you name the musical this program was based on?

Answer: Riverdance

When this was danced at the Canadian Nationals in 1998 before the Olympics,
Bourne and Kraatz received sixes, the highest score in skating at that time in both technique and presentation for this breath-taking performance.
8. There were rumours before the 1998 Olympics about bloc judging. The only North American judge on the panel was the Canadian judge, who gave Bourne and Kraatz a perfect 6 for presentation. This was greatly deserved yet was called up on national bias. Even though this judge had taped another judge bribing them to vote for another team, the Canadian judge subsequently received an unwarranted suspension. Can you tell me the name of this judge?

Answer: Jean Senft

This was the start of what would become in future years a revamping of the judging system, and especially the requirements for specific elements and requirements in ice dancing.
9. In 2003, Bourne and Kraatz were the first Canadian and North American ice dance team to ever win a world gold medal. Can you tell me the piece of music they skated to?

Answer: Adagio in G Minor

Known for their upbeat and innovative music selections during their sometimes tumultuous career, Bourne and Kraatz won the event with a dramatic piece. It was choreographed by world renowned choreographer Nikolai Morozov whom Bourne eventually married, but subsequently divorced.
10. Shortly after their world gold medal win, Bourne and Kraatz parted ways. What was the reason behind the ending of this 12-year partnership?

Answer: Victor wanted to remain competing Shae-Lynn did not

Shae-Lynn continued to do shows such as "Stars on Ice" as a single skater,
and has choreographed many world renowned skaters and skating shows. Victor and his wife Maikki, who was also an ice dancer, later coached up and coming Canadian teams. Victor also worked as a commentator in his home town of Vancouver for the 2010 Winter Olympics.
