Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Box lacrosse is played in countless leagues all over the world. In North America, teams such as the Buffalo Bandits, Calgary Roughnecks, and the Rochester Knighthawks play in the world's most popular box lacrosse league. What is the name of that league?

Answer: The National Lacrosse League (NLL)

The National Lacrosse League was founded in 1986. At that time, founders Russ Cline and Chris Fritz called it the Eagle Pro Box Lacrosse League. There were only four teams until 1988: The Washington Wave, the Baltimore Thunder, the New Jersey Saints, and the Philadelphia Wings. The Philadelphia Wings were the only team remaining of the original four in 2009.
2. How many players are on the field for each team at a time?

Answer: 6

Two attackmen, one transition man, two defensemen, and one goalie are on the field for each team.
3. Box lacrosse is a fast paced sport because of the shot clock, which gives teams a certain amount of time to get a shot on goal. How many seconds are on the shot clock when a team gains possession?

Answer: 30 seconds

If the team in possession does not get a shot on goal in 30 seconds or less, they have to give the ball to the other team. If they do get a shot on goal and regain possession, the shot clock is reset to 30 seconds.
4. Which of the following is a real penalty in box lacrosse?

Answer: Spearing

Spearing is a penalty in which the guilty player tries to poke-check the victim in a stabbing motion with the head of their stick.
5. Why is the sport called "box" lacrosse?

Answer: Because the game is played on an indoor field with walls

The walls around the field are usually around 8' tall. The walls are used for keeping the ball in play, bone-crushing hits, and incredible bank passes.
6. What is the trophy for winning the NLL Championship called?

Answer: The Champions Cup

After you win the Champions Cup, your team name and the MVP is engraved on the side.
7. Who won the 2009 Champions Cup?

Answer: The Calgary Roughnecks

The Roughnecks defeated the New York Titans 12-10 in front of 13,042 fans at the Pengrowth Saddledome in Calgary, on May 12, 2009.
8. What is the size of a regulation box lacrosse goal?

Answer: 4' x 4'

Despite the undersized goal, box lacrosse games are usually high scoring. The average score per game in the NLL is 15-13.
9. Do goalies use the same kind of stick in box lacrosse as goalies do in outdoor lacrosse?

Answer: Yes

Both goalies use a standard goalie stick, a stick nearly three times the size of an attack stick.
10. In the NLL, were there are more teams in Canada than in America during the 2009 season?

Answer: No

In 2009, there were 9 American teams: (The Boston Blazers, The Buffalo Bandits, The Colorado Mammoth, The Minnesota Swarm, The New York Titans, The Philadelphia Wings, The Portland Lumberjax, The Rochester Knighthawks, and The San Jose Stealth). The three Canadian teams were: (The Calgary Roughnecks, The Edmonton Rush, and The Toronto Rock).
