Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which team played at The Dell?

Answer: Southampton

The Dell was the smallest ground in the Premiership, with a capacity of just over 15,000. The other three are all south coast teams as well.
2. Which team called Sincil Bank home?

Answer: Lincoln City

3. Which ground is the most northerly of the following four?

Answer: London Road

London Road is home to Peterborough United, Cambridge United played at The Abbey, Ipswich Town at Portman Road and Oxford United at The Manor Ground.
4. As we all know, since olden days, stadiums are made with the main seating on the west side of the ground so that the VIPs don't have to squint into the afternoon sun. What, then, is the reason that Chester City's Deva stadium has the main stand on the east side of the ground?

Answer: Because the west side of the ground is over the border in Wales

Believe it or not, when Chester built their new ground, the chosen site was slap, bang on the border between England and Wales. If the main stand, including the club offices was on the West side it would have been in Wales and the club could possibly have been forced to play in Welsh part-time leagues, instead of the English Leagues.

Therefore, they put the offices and the main stand on the other side of the pitch.
5. At which ground were the Minstermen playing?

Answer: Bootham Crescent

The Minstermen are York City, the other three grounds are figments of my over active imagination.
6. Which two English league grounds are the closest together, physically?

Answer: Meadow Lane and The City Ground

Notts County and Nottingham Forest play at these grounds.
7. Which team played at Craven Cottage?

Answer: Fulham

The ground is in the swanky Fulham area of London. The name Craven Cottage is derived from the fact that, when the ground was built, the club incorporated an old house, named Craven Cottage, into the stadium. This was the first location for the club offices and therefore became the name of the stadium as well. The cottage itself was still standing in one corner of the ground.
8. What is the one oddity about Brentford's Griffin Park ground that is unique in the football league?

Answer: There are pubs on all four corners of the ground

I can vouch for this fact as I've been there and supped a pint of Guinness in each of them!
9. What is unique about Brighton's Withdean stadium?

Answer: It has a running track around the pitch

Strange, but this is really the only ground in the football league with an athletics track.
10. What is unique about Barnet's Underhill ground?

Answer: It has a sloping pitch which means that the crossbar at one end is level with the goal line at the other

That's right! Whenever a game is played the team winning the toss will choose to play uphill in the first half and should have an easy time in the second half going downhill!
11. Why did the Sixfields stadium, home of Northampton Town, sometimes get the nickname 'Sick' Fields?

Answer: The stadium is built on a rubbish tip, and there are vents coming out of the ground to allow methane gases to escape

Again, amazing but true! It was decided that the ex-rubbish dump was the perfect location for the new ground, built in 1994.
12. If I was watching the Grecians play their home games, which stadium would I go to?

Answer: St. James Park

This the home ground of Exeter City, then of the third division. Newcastle United of the Premiership also play at (a different) St James Park. They are nicknamed the Magpies, hence the cryptic clue!
13. Who played at The Victoria Ground?

Answer: Stoke City

Stoke's old stadium was called the Victoria Ground as well. I bet I caught some of you out with that one!
14. Who was playing at Feethams?

Answer: Darlington

15. Which ground is the highest above sea level in the Football League?

Answer: The Hawthorns

Part of the ground is in West Bromwich, and part of the ground is in the neighboring city of Birmingham. So you can sit or stand in Birmingham and see a goal scored in West Bromwich!)
