Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these is not a reason why CART split from USAC?

Answer: Lack of oval races

USAC had refused to give team owners, such as Penske and Patrick, the right to have their say on key decisions made by USAC. Also, prices for the teams were becoming higher due to turbocharging and ground effects technology, and with prize money not what it is today, the team owners established CART.

As a pointer, there was an abundant of oval races at the time, there was in fact little road-racing but would soon become the most diverse championship in the world.
2. When was CART's first season?

Answer: 1979

CART drivers in 1979 were initially barred from competing in the USAC-sanctioned Indy 500, but a court-order allowed them to. Since then, CART has grown and USAC declined.
3. Which company first sponsored the IndyCar World Series?

Answer: PPG

PPG would have a long association with the CART series, only ending in the late 1990s.

Answer: Ground effects

The Chaparral, driven by Johnny Rutherford, was the first ground-effects car to win the CART title. Penske would later their own version and it would become a standard feature on all CART chassis.

Answer: Wildcat

Although they were successful, eventually Patrick had to give in to the British invasion and buy either Lola or March chassis.
7. How many races did the Chevrolet engine win between 1988 and 1991?

Answer: 53

The Chevy V8 was the most dominant engine during the late 80s and early 90s, winning Indianapolis several times and was near unbeatable between 1988-1992.

Answer: False

False. Mexico City would hold the first non-USA race in 1980 (however, if this is wrong, please tell me. I read this on CART.com so take this as fact.)
11. In mid-1993, USAC and CART agreed on a 'common rules package' that was supposed to stop a split between the CART and USAC boards again. What season was this package supposed to run to?

Answer: 1997

The package later collapsed when Tony George announced the formation of the Indy Racing League which started in 1996, which would be exclusively run on ovals as he felt CART was ignoring the birthplace of American motorsport. Due to the acrimonious split, no CART teams or drivers participated in the 1996 Indy 500.

Answer: Alessandro Zanardi

Alex would leave to compete in F1 for 1999, and fail dismally! He returned to CART in 2001.
15. Who is the most successful CART driver since 1979?

Answer: Michael Andretti
