Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This player is often erroneously called a "One Club Man" but he played 95 times for Charlton before moving to West Ham United in 1967. Who is he?

Answer: Billy Bonds

Billy Bonds joined Charlton as a 15 year old and played for them between 1964 and 1967 before joining the east end club. Many West Ham fans regard him as one of their own, forgetting that he was a product of the Charlton youth system. Bonds played more than 790 games in all competitions for the Hammers over 21 seasons and lifted the FA Cup for them as captain n 1975 and 1980.
2. Which player won two England caps whilst a Charlton player but went on to make more than 350 appearances for Wolverhampton Wanderers, including domestic and European competition finals?

Answer: Mike Bailey

Mike Bailey turned professional with Charlton in 1959 and made more than 150 appearances for Charlton before he moved to Wolverhampton Wanderers in 1966. He lifted the League Cup in 1974 as Captain when Wolves beat Manchester City 2-1 at Wembley, and played in the (losing) 1972 UEFA Cup Final against Tottenham Hotspur.

He returned to the Valley in 1980 as manager and led the club to promotion from the Third Division (now League One) in 1981.
3. Although he made only two appearances for Charlton before being transferred to West Ham, he was at the Valley from 1945-1951. He was most famous as a manager and this "Big" man led Manchester City to greatness in the late 1960s and even took Crystal Palace to a brief stay at the top of the league in the late 1970s! Who is this person?

Answer: Malcolm Allison

"Big Mal" was a larger than life character with his fedora hat and big cigars. He championed the cause of attacking football in an era dominated by dour defence. His playing career was moderate but as coach and joint manager he took Manchester City to four major trophies in three seasons between 1968 and 1970, and managed more than a dozen other clubs including the Kuwait national team in a managerial career that lasted until 1993.

He died in 2010 and his passing was greatly mourned by those who remembered his huge personality and the flair with which the teams he led played.
4. As a schoolboy he was once a programme seller and turnstile operator at The Valley whilst learning the football trade. He made his debut for the Addicks in 1983 and played nearly 300 times for Charlton but became much better known as a Newcastle United player in the Kevin Keegan team of the 1990s. He played 21 times for England. Who is this layer?

Answer: Robert Lee

Robert "Rob" Lee scored on his debut for Charlton against Grimsby Town at the Valley in what was Charlton's first match after winning a reprieve from near bankruptcy. He had a habit of scoring "landmark" goals. He scored the final goal at the Valley, against Stoke City, when the club were forced to share a stadium with Crystal Palace in 1985 and also scored Charlton's first goal back in the top flight of English football for 29 years in the 1 - 1 draw against Sheffield Wednesday at Selhurst Park.
5. He started his career at Charlton in 1979 and was at The Valley for three seasons before being sold to Luton Town. He played for a number of clubs including Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool and Portsmouth. He worked as a pundit, covering football for Sky Sports after being forced into retirement by a persistent cruciate ligament injury. He is ____ .

Answer: Paul Walsh

Paul Walsh was a lightning quick, nimble footed striker who scored 24 goals in 84 matches for Charlton. Popular with the fans he helped the club win promotion in 1981 and was named in the FA Team of the Year in 1982 before his move to Luton Town. He played for Portsmouth in the match where Charlton returned to the Valley in 1992 which Charlton won 1-0, although one commentator, on hearing that "Walsh" had scored, announced on air that Portsmouth were 1-0 up. Unfortunately for the red faced commentator, the scorer wasn't Paul Walsh of Portsmouth, but Colin Walsh of Charlton.

Scott Minto is also a former Charlton player who worked for Sky Sports as a pundit but is not the player described in the question.
6. Once described as "The best uncapped winger in the world", this player left Charlton in 1968 for a then record transfer fee for a winger. He joined Leicester City and played in the 1969 FA Cup final for them (lost 0-1 to Manchester City). He is ____ .

Answer: Len Glover

Lenny played more than 300 times for Leicester City and scored for the Foxes in a losing FA Cup Semi Final against Liverpool in 1973. He had been hugely popular with Charlton fans, with his jinking runs down the left wing, leaving defenders in his wake, his transfer was yet another sad reminder that a club like Charlton would never be able to retain their best players.
7. At the time of his debut he was the youngest ever player to represent Charlton. He joined West Ham in 2005 and scored in the FA Cup Final against Liverpool at the Millenium Stadium with what, at the time, some called a "freak goal". Who is this player?

Answer: Paul Konchesky

Konchesky made his debut for Charlton aged 16 years 93 days against Oxford United in August 1997 but was unable to command a regular first team place until the 2000-01 season. He was generally unsettled at the Valley and at one time put in a transfer request which he later withdrew. He was sold to West Ham in 2005 and later moved on to Leicester City.
8. At the time of his debut he was the youngest ever player to represent Charlton. He made his Charlton debut at the age of 16 years and 59 days. He joined Liverpool in 2010. Who is this player?

Answer: Jonjo Shelvey

When Shelvey played his first game for Charlton he was still at school! Manager Alan Pardew selected him to play when he still had one week of his school career remaining. In 2009 he became Charlton's youngest ever goalscorer with his strike against Norwich City in an FA Cup tie, 54 days before his 17th birthday.

After leaving the Valley he was in the Liverpool squad that won the League Cup Final and lost the FA Cup final in 2012. He joined Swansea City in 2013 and then Newcastle United in January 2016.
9. Signed by Arsenal from Charlton in 2011, he then had a long loan period with West Ham United. Who is this strong and uncompromising defender, who started his career at the Valley in 2010?

Answer: Carl Jenkinson

Carl Jenkinson played only 8 times for Charlton before being lured away to the Emirates Stadium. Given his Valley debut by then manager Chris Powell, himself no slouch as a full back in his playing days, joined Arsenal in 2011. He played for Finland at Under 18 level, qualifying for that country due to having a Finnish mother, but made his full England debut against Sweden in 2012.
10. He was a product of the Charlton Athletic youth scheme between 1997-1999 but became yet another Charlton player acquired by West Ham United, this time before he even made an appearance for the Addicks. He is _____ .

Answer: Jermain Defoe

Controversy and bad blood raged surrounding Defoe's defection when he achieved the age of 16 and signed professional forms with West Ham after benefiting from the Charlton youth system. West Ham were ordered by The FA to pay the Addicks compensation depending on future performances but that was scant consolation to the fans who saw yet another promising young talent lured across the Thames.

When he played for West Ham against Charlton at the Valley (and scored) he was booed and heckled throughout by Charlton fans who felt embittered by what they saw as his betrayal of the club that nurtured him.
