Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Against which club did Sam Bartram make his 500th appearance for Charlton?

Answer: Portsmouth

Sam played this landmark match at the Valley on 6th March 1954 and was given a guard of honour by both teams as he ran out for the match. At that time he was the longest serving player with one club in the history of the game. Sam played 623 times for Charlton Athletic in league and FA Cup. After his playing days were over, he became a journalist. He died in 1981 at the age of 67
2. When Charlton returned to the First Division in 1986, after an absence of 29 years, who were their first league opponents at Selhurst Park?

Answer: Sheffield Wednesday

The match finished in a 1-1 draw. Charlton's goal was scored by Robert Lee.
3. Who was the first Charlton player to represent England in a full cap international?

Answer: Seth Plum

Seth played his only match for England against France in Paris on 10th May 1923 just two weeks before Harold Miller played against Sweden on 24 May 1923. Don Welsh made his three lions debut on 14 May 1938 in the infamous "Nazi Salute" match against Germany in Berlin.

He always said that he and the other England players were pressured into doing it. Sam Bartram never played for England. It was often said of him that he was "The best goalkeeper England never had."
4. The announcement that Charlton would leave The Valley to ground share at Selhurst Park was made just prior to kick off on Saturday 7th September 1985. Who were the opponents that day?

Answer: Crystal Palace

The irony of this is that Selhurst Park is the home of Crystal Palace, some 8 miles across London as the crow flies. It was not a happy tenancy and we were delighted to return to our beloved home at The Valley in December 1991.
5. Charlton Athletic are the only club to lose an FA Cup tie and go on to reach the final.

Answer: True

The FA Cup is a knockout competition which means that if a team loses a match they are eliminated. However, in the 1945-46 season (the first season after WW2), the competition was played on a two-leg home and away basis (which increased the total gate takings for both), the only time it has ever been structured this way. Charlton won their Third Round first leg tie against Fulham at The Valley 3-1, but lost the return at Fulham 1-2.

They progressed in the competition with an aggregate score of 4-3 ... and the defeat at Fulham means they are the only club to lose a match and progress. Charlton reached the final that season but were defeated 1-4 by Derby County.

When asked, the FA stated that they would never play the competition on a two-leg basis again meaning the feat could never be repeated.
6. Which Charlton goalkeeper was forced to retire from football after sustaining an horrific eye injury in a league match at Sunderland?

Answer: Graham Tutt

The match at Roker Park took place in February 1976. Whilst making a save, Graham Tutt threw himself at the feet of Sunderland striker Tom Finney (not the same Tom Finney of "Lion of Vienna" fame). Finney's boot made contact with Tutt's face and the injury was so serious that his vision was permanently affected.

He was unable to recover sufficiently to play football ever again. Tutt didn't blame Finney, accepting that the collision was entirely accidental.
7. Who was the first Charlton player to score a goal for England?

Answer: Harold Miller

Harold scored in his only England international against Sweden in May 1923. Don Welsh scored against Rumania in May 1939, Robert Lee scored goals for England but as a Newcastle United player. He never represented England during his time at The Valley. Mike Bailey played two internationals for England but didn't score in either of them.
8. Which Charlton player was once crowned "Hong Kong Footballer of the Year"?

Answer: Charlie Wright

Charlie Wright was serving in Hong Kong during his national service in 1960, and was called up to play for Hong Kong in a world cup qualifying match. During the game he saved a penalty and the game ended in a goalless draw. The Hong Kong FA gave him their Footballer of the Year award in recognition of his performance. Wright, a Scotsman, was one of Charlton's most popular players of the 1960s, known for his erratic behaviour such as sitting on the crossbar when the ball was at the far end of the field, or walking behind his goal to chat with fans.

There is even a story that he accepted a cigarette from a fan at one time.
9. Johnny Summers scored five goals in the famous "comeback match" against Huddersfield Town in 1957. Charlton won that match 7-6 after trailing 1-5. Who scored Charlton's other two goals in that game?

Answer: Buck Ryan

On 21st December 1957 at The Valley, Charlton were trailing to Huddersfield Town 1-5 with 25 minutes to play; and only ten men on the pitch. Johnny Summers changed the game, scoring four goals in 17 minutes in addition to one he had scored in the first half, giving him five in the game. Added to a Buck Ryan goal in the 63rd minute, Charlton led 6-5 with only minutes remaining. Huddersfield equalised, but Buck Ryan came up with the winner in the 89th minute.

This was the first time in the history of The Football League that a team scored six goals (home or away) and lost the match.
10. In which season did Charlton Athletic's ladies team first win the Women's FA Cup?

Answer: 2004- 05

Charlton Athletic Ladies beat Everton Ladies 1 - 0 with a goal scored by Eniola Aluko in the 58th minute. I was there..! Nigerian born Eniola has played many times for the England Women's team and was a member of the Team GB Olympic Squad at the 2012 London Games.
