Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which team is the most successful in terms of percentage of games won during their debut year?

Answer: Melbourne (1998)

The Storm won 17 of their first 24 games during the 1998 NRL season (71 percent). Newcastle only won 5 out of 22 in the 1988 NSWRL competition, and the Broncos fared a bit better the same year, with 8 from 22.
2. Which of the following teams has been least successful in terms of percentage of games won in their first season?

Answer: North Queensland (1995)

The Cowboys won only 2 of the 22 games in their first season in the ARL (9 percent). Their first ever win was by 14-10 against Illawarra in Round 8, 1995. Cronulla won 3 from 22 (14 percent).
3. The Canberra Raiders won more than 50 percent of their matches in their debut season in the NSWRL (1982).

Answer: False

Far from it. They won 4 from 26 that year, finishing with the wooden spoon. Their first win came in round 8, edging out Newtown 12-11.
4. When Penrith joined the NSWRL in 1967, they won 5 games and finished second-last.

Answer: True

12 teams contested the 1967 NSWRL competition. The other newcomers thatyear, Cronulla-Sutherland, finished last.
5. The Wests Tigers drew their first ever NRL game. Did they go on to make the top 8 in their debut season of 2000?

Answer: No

They finished 10th in their first season, with 11 wins, 2 draws and 14 losses.
6. Between 1908, when the NSWRL started, and 1998, when the NRL started, ___ team(s) finished as minor premier in their debut season?

Answer: 1

A bit of a trick question this. In 1908, someone had to finish top of the ladder, and Souths were that team. This was not repeated during the next 80 years, from 1909 and 1998.
7. St George-Illawarra won what percentage of NRL matches in their first season as a joint venture club (1999)?

Answer: 64%

They won 18 of 28 games played that year. They finished 6th in the regualr season, but went on to make the Grand Final, going down to Melbourne Storm 20-18 (whose debut season was 1998!).
8. South Sydney only lost one match in the first ever NSWRL season way back in 1908. Who did they lose to?

Answer: Eastern Suburbs

Easts beat them 13-12 in round 3. Souths won 8 from 9 in the regular season, as well as the semi final and final, to take out the first NSWRL premiership.
9. Despite finishing with the wooden spoon in their first season (1967), Cronulla-Sutherland actually won their first ever NSWRL match.

Answer: True

Cronulla beat Easts 11-5 in Round 1 at the Sydney Sports Ground. Not a bad effort considering Easts finished 4th that year. Cronulla only won 2 other games in their first season, in rounds 4 and 10. They played 22 games in total.
10. Canterbury-Bankstown (later known as the Bulldogs) were winless in their debut season (1935).

Answer: False

Canterbury actually won 2 games in 1935, however they set 2 permiership records that year, with the 2 biggest losses of all time, in consecutive games! They lost 91-6 against St George (Round 5), and 87-7 against Easts (Round 6). Despite this, they did not get the wooden spoon; that went to University (who failed to win a match).
11. Eastern Suburbs (later known as the Roosters) only lost two games in their debut season (1908): one was against South Sydney in the final. Who was the other against?

Answer: Glebe

Easts finished second in the NSWRL standings for 1908, with 8 wins from 9 matches (for and against gave Souths the minor premiership). They beat Norths 23-10 in the minor semi final, before losing the final to Souths 14-12.
12. The Auckland Warriors (later known as NZ Warriors) made the top 8 in their debut season (1995).

Answer: False

They finished 10th, with 13 wins and 9 losses. They would have finished in the top 8 if they had not had 2 competition points stripped for breaching the interchange rule.
13. Parramatta won how many games in their debut season (1947)?

Answer: 3

Their first win was over Wests, 13-8, in round 8. They received the wooden spoon in 1947.
14. What position did Brisbane finish in their debut season (1988)?

Answer: 7th

The Broncos stunned defending premiers Manly in their first game, 44-10.
15. Did Manly-Warringah finish 2nd in their first season (1947)?

Answer: No

Manly finished second-last in 1947, with 4 wins and 14 losses.
