Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which stadium was built for the 1988 season and became the home ground of the Eastern Suburbs Roosters?

Answer: Sydney Football Stadium

It was also used for the Grand Finals from 1988-1998 inclusive. The NSWRL premiership was won in 1988 by the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs 24-12 over the Balmain Tigers. The stadium was filled to a capacity 40,000.
2. Kogarah Oval is the 'spiritual' home of which team?

Answer: St George

St George spent many successful years there. After they merged with Illawarra for the 1999 season, they had to give up the ground for renovations because it did not fulfill the NRL's new criteria. During this time they used the SFS as an alternative. They made a return to Kogarah (as Oki Jubilee Oval) in 2003.
3. Which team used ANZ Stadium as a home ground?

Answer: Brisbane

The Brisbane Broncos have also used Lang Park as a home ground (also known as Suncorp Stadium). These two grounds are also fantastic Origin strongholds for the Queenslanders.
4. Illawarra's home ground in Wollongong was sponsored by which television network?

Answer: WIN

WIN Stadium is almost beachside. WIN Stadium is just about the same as NBN on the North Coast, and Sydney's Channel 9. These are all part of News Limited and are owned by Kerry Packer.
5. Which team played most of their home matches at Henson Park?

Answer: Newtown

The Jets (or Bluebags) played at this Marrickville ground from 1936 to 1946, and 1954 to 1983). They were suspended from the NSWRL competition at the end of the 1983 season, but continued in junior representative fixtures and junior club competitions from 1984 to 1990. Newtown entered the NSWRL Metropolitan Cup competition in 1991, fielding first and reserve grade sides (this competition was formed in 1990).

In 2000 Newtown entered the NSWRL First Division, and became a feeder club for the Auckland Warriors.
6. The Hunter Mariners were only in the Super League competition for one year (1997). Under how many names was their home ground known as?

Answer: 2

At the beginning of the season it was known as Topper Stadium, but halfway through, it was changed to Breakers Stadium. Hunter's crowd record was only 7,719 against Melbourne on the 12th of April 1997.
7. Where is Olympic Park located?

Answer: Melbourne

This was the Melbourne Storm's home gorund when they entered the NRL. It was originally built for Melbourne's 1956 Olympic Games. In season 2001 they switched their home ground to Colonial Stadium (also played at by the AFL's Essendon Bombers) but moved back to Olympic Park for 2002.
8. The main home ground used by the Auckland/New Zealand Warriors in the late 1990s and early 2000s was which of the following?

Answer: Ericsson Stadium

Westpac Trust is in Wellington; Eden Park is an Auckland rugby union ground; Eden Gardens is an Indian cricket ground. Ericsson Stadium is regularly used for soccer matches as well. One of their biggest wins at Ericsson Stadium was in 1999 against the Newcastle Knights, 42-0.
9. Newcastle also played in the NSWRL in 1908 and 1909. What was their home ground in 1909?

Answer: Newcastle Showground

In 1908 they travelled to Sydney each weekend for their games. After 1909 they decided to leave and form a local Newcastle competition. They "returned" in 1988 as the Knights, with a uniform of red and blue. In 1908 and 1909 they wore red and white.
10. Stadium Australia was built for the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, but had its name changed for the beginning of the 2002 season. What did it become?

Answer: Telstra Stadium

This happened due to Telstra's sponsorship of it. In 2002 the Sydney Football Stadium became the Aussie Stadium, and EnergyAustralia is what Newcastle's Marathon Stadium was changed to. Stadium Australia set the world record rugby league crowd in 1999's Grand Final between Melbourne and St George-Illawarra. This record was 107,999 - a capacity crowd (sometimes given as 107,558).
