Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which ground did the Brisbane Broncos return home to in 2003?

Answer: Suncorp Stadium

It used to be known as Lang Park but is now Suncorp due to its sponsors, Suncorp Metway. They returned to it against the Newcastle Knights slightly before Origin 1. In just a handful of games there, many players sustained major knee injuries due to the questionable sandy surface (hence the nickname 'Sandcorp'. Most of these players were from the Sydney Roosters, including the 2002 Clive Churchill medallist, Craig Fitzgibbon.
2. What ground did North Sydney use as their home ground for almost all of the seasons they were in first grade?

Answer: North Sydney Oval

Amazingly, this was their home ground from 1910-1999 (and the NSWRL had only been established in 1908). They were contemplating a move to Gosford's Express Advocate Stadium for 2000 but were forced to merge with Manly, becoming the Northern Eagles.
3. What home ground did the Melbourne Storm use in 2001?

Answer: Colonial Stadium

This only lasted for one season because many fans did not support the move. They had shared the undercover stadium (it had a roof to keep out Melbourne's nasty weather) with the AFL's Essendon Bombers.
4. Which of these is not one of the names that the Cronulla Sharks' home ground Toyota Park has been known as?

Answer: Sutherland Oval

The Sharks played at Sutherland Oval in 1967 and 1968. In 1969 they moved to what was then known as Endeavor Field from 1969-1984 and 1987, Ronson Field in 1985 and 1986, Caltex Field from 1988-1995, Shark Park from 1996-1999 and Toyota Park from 2000.
5. Where did the Western Reds (also known as the Perth Reds) play their home matches?

Answer: The WACA Ground

They played there for their 3 years in the top grade, 1995-1997. WACA stands for Western Australian Cricket Association, and is primarily a cricket oval. AFL games are played on it too. The other three stadiums do not exist.
6. Where did Annandale play the majority of their home matches?

Answer: Wentworth Park

Annandale were in the NSWRL from 1910-1920. Wentworth Park was their home ground from 1910-1919, and Birchgrove Oval was their home ground in 1920.
7. Which of these was considered to be one of Gold Coast's home grounds?

Answer: Seagulls Stadium

They played at Seagulls Stadium in West Tweed Heads from 1988-1995, and at Carrara Stadium from 1996-1998.
8. Did University ever have an official home ground?

Answer: No

Nicknamed 'The Students', they played in the NSWRL from 1920-1937. They had no home ground and were all amateurs.
9. What name was the North Queensland Cowboys' first home ground NOT known as?

Answer: Townsville Oval

It was known as Stockland Stadium from 1995-1997, Malanda Stadium in 1998 and Dairy Farmers Stadium from 1999.
10. The first NSWRL games were played on April 20, 1908. Which two grounds were these matches played at?

Answer: Birchgrove Oval and Wentworth Park

At Birchgrove Oval South Sydney beat North Sydney 11-7 and Balmain beat Western Suburbs 24-0. At Wentworth Park, Eastern Suburbs beat Newtown 32-16 and Glebe beat Newcastle 8-5. These matches paved the way for arguably the best rugby league competition the world has ever seen.
