Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Marley and Danny want to play a tennis match but can't agree who serves first. How is this determined?

Answer: By a coin toss

The fairest way to determine the first server (who does have a bit of an advantage) is of course random. Thus, a coin flip is used in the official rules. The official ITF rules require that the toss is made prior to warming up on the court.
2. Milo opens a match with a first service. It touches the net, lands in fair territory and his opponent Otis can't return it. What is the call?

Answer: Milo plays another first service

Tennis players get two chances to serve. If the first service gets caught in the net or goes out of bounds, the server may try again. If the service hits the net but still lands fair, the service is repeated without changing the count. Thus, Milo gets another chance at a first service.
3. The score is 40-30 in the first game. Baxter serves; Jack's return touches the line and Baxter can't reach it. What is the score?

Answer: Deuce

40-40 would be the logical way of expressing the ensuing score, but in English usage, this is called "deuce". To win a game, a player needs to score two points above his or her opponent.

A ball that touches the line is "in", so Jack's return was good.

Interestingly, French usage differentiates between the first deuce ("quarante-a", translating to 40-40) and subsequent ones ("égalité"). However, this does not apply in English usage.
4. The score is 3-2 and 40-15 in the first set. Benji is up to serve, which side of the court will he to serve from?

Answer: Right side

The side from which a player serves is determined only by the score within the game. If an even number of volleys has been played, the player must serve from the right, otherwise from the left.

In this case, four volleys have been completed, so Benji must serve from the right.
5. Zeus and Roxanne are a mixed double. They won their first set 6-2, after Roxanne served first in the match. Who will serve first for the second set?

Answer: Zeus and Roxanne may choose

In doubles matches, each team decides which of the two players serves first, but once this decision is taken the order alternates for the remainder of the set. At the start of the second set, the partnership may choose again.
6. The second set is tied in games, 6-6 (and we're not in a Wimbledon match). Mari served first and just won her third point while Rocky won two. What score is announced by the umpire?

Answer: 3-2 Mari

With games being 6-6, we're playing a tie-break. In this special kind of game, the winner needs seven points as opposed to the usual four, but still needs to win by two. The count is not the normal 15 - 30 - 40 but just uses 1 - 2 - 3 and so on until reaching 7.
7. Quigley makes his first service from the wrong side of the court. It is good and the opponent does not return it. Neither player protests but you, as the umpire, notice the problem, what is the call?

Answer: Quigley must play another first service, from the correct side

A service from the wrong side of the court must be repeated from the correct side, regardless of the result. However, if a player makes a bad first service and the error is spotted only on the second serve, the missed first service stands and the player must play a second service from the correct side.
8. Digby (an umpire) is inspecting Finn's racket after the opponent complains about it being noncompliant. Which of the following would cause him to penalize Finn?

Answer: The hitting surface of the racket is 42.3cm in length

A racket may be up to 73.7cm in length with no maximum length for the handle, but the hitting surface cannot exceed 29.2cm in width or 39.4cm in length.
9. Koko is officiating a tennis match. What would NOT be an optional rule he would have to invoke if the tournament were to call for it?

Answer: Players in a singles match play on the wider court usually used for doubles.

No, Cruella can't change the court specifications. However, she could, at the discretion of the tournament organizer, have to apply short sets, a tie-break in place of a final set, or "no-ad" scoring. None of these would be her decision - all of these optional rules would have to be part of the tournament rules.
10. Barry has just scored a point. In which of the following cases could you NOT announce "game set and match, Barry" (assuming a match for two sets with a 10-point match tie-break)?

Answer: Barry is up 40-0, 5-0 with each player having won a set

If you are reaching 5-0, 40-0 in a two-set match with a match tie break, you certainly must have gone wrong before and you should better have another cup of coffee instead of staying in your chair, because that situation just cannot occur. Since the stipulation is "two sets", you have to invoke the match tie break at one set all and a 5-0 set cannot happen.
