Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Minnesota North Stars played in the NHL from 1967-68 to 1992-93. What were the two primary colors of the North Stars' uniform?

Answer: Green and gold

The Minnesota North Stars entered the NHL during the major expansion season of 1967-68. The North Stars looked flashy in their green and gold uniforms during their 26 seasons in the NHL. Some of Minnesota's best players included Bill Goldsworthy, Danny Grant, Dino Ciccarelli and Cesare Maniago.

The North Stars twice advanced to the Stanley Cup Finals (1980-81 and 1990-91) but lost each time. The North Stars moved to Dallas following the 1992-93 season.
2. From 1925-26 to 1940-41, the New York Rangers faced competition from their intra-city rivals, the New York ________.

Answer: Americans

The New York Americans played in the NHL for 17 seasons, sharing Madison Square Garden ice with their more famous rivals, the New York Rangers. The Americans did not enjoy very much success, never reaching the Stanley Cup Finals. Perhaps the Amerks' best player was Lorne Carr, a forward who scored 99 goals for the club. During the 1941-42 campaign, the Americans moved to Brooklyn because of financial problems.

The team unofficially disbanded following the 1941-42 season and officially left the NHL in 1946.
3. The Hartford Whalers played in the NHL from 1979-80 until 1996-97. To where did the Whalers move after the 1997 season had ended?

Answer: Carolina

The Hartford Whalers moved to Raleigh, North Carolina, after the 1996-97 season, becoming the Carolina Hurricanes. The Whalers joined the NHL in 1979-80 as part of the WHA-NHL merger. The Whalers wore blue, green and white jerseys and played in the Hartford Civic Center. Center Ron Francis (264 goals) was probably the best Whaler player in club history.

Unfortunately, the fans in the capital city of Connecticut didn't support the Whalers, and owner Peter Karmanos decided to relocate the team to Carolina.
4. The Quebec Nordiques competed in the NHL from 1979-80 until 1994-95. Which one of these players scored the most NHL regular season goals (456) for the Nordiques?

Answer: Michel Goulet

Forward Michel Goulet scored 456 of his 548 NHL regular season goals as a member of the Quebec Nordiques; he was the all-time goal-scoring leader for Quebec. His highest single season total for Quebec was 57, during the 1982-83 campaign. Marc Tardif notched 116 goals for Quebec, Dale Hunter scored 140 goals for the Nordiques, and Guy Lafleur tallied 24 times for Quebec.

The Nordiques joined the NHL in the 1979-80 WHA-NHL merger and remained in the NHL until the 1994-95 season had ended. The Nordiques then moved to Denver and continued as the Colorado Avalanche.
5. The Cleveland Barons played in the NHL for only two seasons, 1976-77 and 1977-78. In which arena did the Barons play their home games?

Answer: Richfield Coliseum

The Cleveland Barons played their home matches at Richfield Coliseum. This arena seated about 18,500 fans for hockey games and was also the home of the Cleveland Cavaliers of the NBA until 1994. The Barons were formed from the remnants of the California Golden Seals team. Forward Dennis Maruk was the leading scorer for the Barons, notching 64 goals in the team's brief two-season existence.

In 1978-79, the Barons merged with the Minnesota North Stars. The Igloo was located in Pittsburgh, the Saddledome is situated in Calgary, and the Fabulous Forum is located in Los Angeles.
6. Which one of these defunct NHL franchises, led by Nels Stewart, won Stanley Cup titles in 1926 and 1935?

Answer: Montreal Maroons

The Maroons' best player was probably forward Nels Stewart, an All-Star who scored 185 goals for Montreal. Like the more famous Canadiens, the Maroons played their matches in the Montreal Forum. Due to financial problems, Maroons' ownership decided to fold after the 1937-38 season.

The Philadelphia Quakers played in the NHL for only one season, 1930-31. The Hamilton Tigers were an NHL team from 1920 to 1925, and the St. Louis Eagles competed in the NHL during the 1934-35 campaign.
7. The city of Kansas City fielded an NHL team for just two seasons, 1974-75 and 1975-76. What was the nickname of this franchise?

Answer: Scouts

The Kansas City Scouts, along with the Washington Capitals, entered the NHL in the 1974-75 season as an expansion team. The Scouts played their home games at Kemper Arena. Guy Charron (40 goals) was probably the Scouts' best player in the club's brief two-season existence. Because of low fan turnout, the owners of the Scouts sold the team to investors in Denver, where the team became known as the Colorado Rockies. Eventually, the Rockies moved to New Jersey and became the Devils.
8. The Atlanta Flames played their first NHL season in 1972-73. Which other team, playing in the Nassau Coliseum, joined the NHL during that season?

Answer: New York Islanders

Unlike the Islanders, who eventually won four consecutive Stanley Cup titles while playing at Nassau Coliseum, the Flames were never able to win the Cup. Tom Lysiak (155 goals) and goalie Dan Bouchard were two of Atlanta's best players. The Flames played their home games at the Omni Coliseum. The Atlanta team moved to Calgary following the 1979-80 season.
9. Which one of these former World Hockey Association teams joined the NHL prior to the 1979-80 season?

Answer: Winnipeg Jets

In 1979-80, the Winnipeg Jets joined the National Hockey League after a merger between the WHA and the NHL. The Jets' best player during the 1980s was probably forward Dale Hawerchuk, who scored nearly 400 goals for Winnipeg. Due to financial problems, the Jets moved to Phoenix following the 1995-96 season. The other three WHA clubs listed in this question never played in the NHL.
10. In 1967-68, the Oakland (California) Seals joined the NHL as part of a major expansion move. Which former NHL forward was the original coach of the Seals?

Answer: Bert Olmstead

Olmstead scored 181 goals in a career which lasted from 1948 to 1962. Olmstead was named the head coach of the expansion Seals to open the 1967-68 season. Unfortunately, Olmstead didn't have much success in Oakland; his team compiled an abysmal record of 11-37-16 for a mere 38 points. Olmstead stepped down as the Seals' coach with 10 games remaining in the '67-68 season, and Gordie Fashoway was behind the bench for the final 10 games. Charles O. Finley and Bill Torrey were executives who became involved with the Seals in the early 1970s. Al Arbour was a veteran defenseman playing for the St. Louis Blues in 1967-68.
