1. Detroit Red Wings
Answer: Detroit Cougars
The Detroit (MI) Cougars joined the National Hockey League in 1926-27. The team changed its name to the Falcons in 1930-31 and then the Red Wings in 1932-33. During the team's first season (1926-27), Windsor Arena in Windsor, CA served as home ice for the Cougars.
In 1927, the team moved to the Detroit Olympia in Detroit. In 1979, the Red Wings moved to the Joe Louis Arena, also in Detroit. Construction began in 2015 on the next home of the Red Wings, Little Caesars Arena, also in Detroit. The Red Wings won their first Stanley Cup in 1935-36.
2. Carolina Hurricanes

The New England Whalers began play in the World Hockey Association in 1972-73. In 1979, they were one of four WHA teams to join the National Hockey League. Upon joining the NHL the team changed its name to the Hartford (CT) Whalers. In 1997, the team moved to North Carolina and renamed itself the Carolina Hurricanes.
The New England Whalers played their first season (1972-73) in Boston Arena in Boston, MA. In their second season (1973-74), the Whalers moved to the Boston Garden, also in Boston. Ready to move to Hartford, the Whalers played the first part of the 1974-75 season in the Big E Coliseum in West Springfield, MA.
The Whalers played in the Hartford Civic Center in Hartford from 1975-1997 except for 1978-80 when the Civic Center was being repaired from extreme weather damage and the team played in the Springfield Civic Center in Springfield, MA. Upon moving to North Carolina, the team played home games at Greensboro Coliseum in Greensboro, NC from 1997 to 1999. Beginning in 1999, the Hurricanes played in PNC Arena in Raleigh, NC.
The Whalers won an Avco World Trophy (the championship of the WHA) in 1972-73. Their first Stanley Cup win was as the Hurricanes, in 2005-06.
3. New Jersey Devils

The Kansas City (MO) Scouts began play in the National Hockey League for the 1974-75 season. Before the 1976-77 season, the Scouts moved to Denver, CO, and renamed themselves the Colorado Rockies. The team moved east and became the New Jersey Devils in 1982-83.
The Kansas City Scouts played their two season in Kemper Arena in Kansas City. The Colorado Rockies played the next six seasons in McNichols Sports Arena in Denver. The Devils won their first Stanley Cup in 1994-95.
4. Arizona Coyotes

The Winnipeg (MB) Jets began play in the World Hockey Association in the 1972-73 season. The Jets were one of four WHA teams to begin play in the National Hockey League in the 1979-80 season. The Jets moved to Phoenix, AZ and became the Phoenix Coyotes for the 1996-97 season.
The Jets moved to nearby Glendale, AZ for the 2003-04 season and renamed themselves the Arizona Coyotes for the 2004-05 season. From 1972 to 1996, the Jets played in Winnipeg Arena in Winnipeg. When moving to Arizona in 1996, the team first played at the American West Arena in Phoenix.
In 2003, the Coyotes began play in the Gila River Arena of Glendale. The Jets won three Avco World Trophies --WHL championships-- in 1975-76, 1977-78, 1978-79.
5. Calgary Flames

The Atlanta (GA) Flames began play in the National Hockey League in the 1972-73 season. For the 1980-81 season the team moved to Calgary, AB. The Flames won their first Stanley Cup in the 1988-89 season.
6. Edmonton Oilers

Initially the World Hockey Association gave franchise rights to two teams in Alberta: Edmonton (Oilers) and Calgary. When the Calgary team folded before playing, the Edmonton team named itself the Alberta Oilers for the 1972-73 season. The next season, the team returned to its original name: Edmonton Oilers. For the 1979-80 season, the Oilers were one of four WHA teams that joined the National Hockey League.
The Edmonton Oilers won five Stanley Cups in the 1980s: 1983-84, 1984-85, 1986-87, 1987-88 and 1989-90.
7. Colorado Avalanche

The Quebec Nordiques began play in the World Hockey Association in the 1972-73 season. For the 1979-80 season, the Nordiques were one of four teams that moved to the National Hockey League. The team moved to Denver, CO, and began play as the Colorado Avalanche in the 1995-96 season.
The Nordiques won one Avco World Trophy (WHL championship) in 1975-76. The Avalanche won their first Stanley Cup in 1995-96.
8. Dallas Stars

The Minnesota North Stars were one of six expansion franchises that the National Hockey League added for the 1967-68 season, the first expansion ny the NHL from the Original Six. Beginning in the 1978-79 season, the North Stars were merged with the Cleveland Barons (another 1967 expansion team and formerly the California Seals, Oakland Seals, and California Golden Seals).
In 1993 the team moved to Dallas, TX, and renamed itself the Stars. The North Stars played in the Metropolitan Sports Center/Met Center of Bloomington, MN, from 1967-1993.
The Stars played in Reunion Arena (Dallas) from 1993-2001. Beginning in 2001, the Stars played in American Airlines Center in Dallas. The Dallas Stars won their Stanley Cup in 1998-99.
9. Winnipeg Jets

The Atlanta Thrashers began play in the National Hockey League for the 1999-2000 season. The team moved to Winnipeg, MB, in 2011 and renamed itself the Jets. For their twelve seasons as the Thrashers, the team played in the Phillips Arena in Atlanta and then, from 2011, in the MTS Center in Winnipeg.
10. Toronto Maple Leafs

The Toronto franchise began play in the National Hockey League for the 1917-18 season. While the team did not have an official name the first season, fans and media often referred to the team as the "Blueshirts" or "Torontos" as many of the players were "leased" from the Toronto Blueshirts of the National Hockey Association.
By the second season (1918-19), the team was called the Arenas. For the 1919-20 season, the team was renamed the St. Pats. Beginning in the 1924-25 season, the team was called the Maple Leafs.
The team played from 1917-31 at Arena Gardens in Toronto. The Maple Leafs played in Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto from 1931-1999 when they moved to the Air Canada Centre in Toronto. The team won 13 Stanley Cups during the 20th century, from 1917-18 season to 1966-67.
