Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these quotes did Mike Tyson NOT utter after losing to the heavyweight champion, Lennox Lewis on June 7th, 2002?

Answer: "I'm going to eat his children."

"Iron Mike" made all of these statements, however the reference to eating Lennox Lewis' children was made before the fight. Lennox Lewis replied by telling the media that he did not have any children.
2. When asked about being a role model to the youth of America, this player uttered this quote, "I want all the kids to do what I do, to look up to me. I want all the kids to copulate me." Who is he?

Answer: Andre Dawson

I found this in a "Sports Illustrated" article called "Why Athletes Should Not Be Role Models." Andre Dawson was an outfielder for the Chicago Cubs at the time.
3. "Nobody in football should be called a genius. A genius is a guy like Norman Einstein." Which of the following said this?

Answer: Joe Theismann

Joe stated this on February 8, 2002. It turns out that Joe Theismann went to high school with a Norman Einstein, who was the class valedictorian. "Sports Illustrated" ran the story with the yearbook pictures shortly after Joe's blunder.
4. In the 1992 Summer Olympics, the United States team comprised professional basketball players for the first time. Their first round opponent was Angola. Charles Barkley, not known for being politically correct, was asked what he thought of the Angolan team. What was his response?

Answer: "All I know about Angola is Angola's in trouble."

The American team was labeled the "Dream Team" and sported players such as Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, "Magic" Johnson, and Chris Mullen. The games were held in Barcelona and as rude as Charles' comments may have been, they did ring true as the U.S.A. trounced Angola 116-48.
5. "They make a lot of money, but they spend a lot of money." This quote was stated by the leader of the NBA Players Union as one of the reasons why the players had to strike. Who is this famous person?

Answer: Patrick Ewing

To be even more precise, Ewing was campaigning for the "less fortunate union members" that were not slated to make $11 million the following year like himself. Needless to say, this did not endear the players to fans who had to endure a strike-shortened season in 1988-1989.
6. When Barry Bonds knocked his 73rd home run out of the ballpark in 2001, he proclaimed" "Today I am the greatest of all time." ?

Answer: False

It was Ricky Henderson that made this statement on May 1, 1991, as an Oakland A in Yankee Stadium, when he eclipsed Lou Brock's stolen base record of 938. He held the base over his head as he proclaimed this to the crowd, which included Lou Brock.
Barry Bonds was asked, in a separate incident, if he could relate to the fans, who say the players make too much money. His response was "It's not my fault, they don't play baseball!"
7. Which foods did Fuzzy Zoeller state to the press that he hoped Tiger Woods would not serve the following year at the Masters in 1997?

Answer: Fried Chicken and Collard Greens

Zoeller's comments at the Masters were: "That little boy is driving well and he's putting well. He's doing everything it takes to win. So, you know what you guys do when he gets in here? You pat him on the back and say congratulations and enjoy it and tell him not serve fried chicken next year. Got it?" Zoeller then smiled, snapped his fingers, and walked away.

Then he turned and added, "or collard greens or whatever the hell they serve." The winner of the Masters gets to choose the menu for the following year. Perhaps Fuzzy would have selected "Sour Grapes"?
8. What was Shaquille O'Neal's response when asked by a reporter whether he visited the Parthenon in his trip to Greece?

Answer: "I can't really remember the names of the clubs that we went to."

This was in addition to this quote, after being asked about his lack of championships (obviously before he won rings with the Los Angeles Lakers), "I've won at every level, except college and pro."
9. Which quote does not match the player?

Answer: "Half this game is ninety percent mental" - Bum Phillips, NFL Coach

The man responsible for this quote was Danny Ozark, manager of the Philadelphia Phillies. During a losing streak, a reporter asked him what he thought of his team. He responded with "It is beyond my apprehension."
10. What was Chicago Bears quarterback Jim McMahon talking about when he stated the following: "The people don't take baths and they don't speak English. No golf courses, no room service. Who needs it?"

Answer: Europe

I got this gem from a site called "Why Anthropology is Important."

11. John McKay, the first coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, was "chock full of quotes" during the inaugural season of 1976 when the Bucs endured a 0-14 record. Which of the following was NOT a quote by him?

Answer: "This has been a team effort. No one or two guys could have done all this."

Casey Stengel said this after the Mets lost 120 games in their inaugural season in 1962.
12. When asked about Terry Glenn's performance during training camp in his rookie year, Bill Parcells referred to him as a "she"?

Answer: True

In 1996, Bill Parcells fought with Patriots' owner Bob Kraft for control of the team and Parcells did not want to draft Terry Glenn. He lost the battle and stated that "she" was doing well when asked by a reporter. They were reunited in Dallas in 2003.
13. Yogi Berra is another person famous for his quotations. One of these is NOT by Yogi: which is it?

Answer: "The only difference between this and Custer's last stand was Custer didn't have to look at the tape afterwards".

The quote that is not by Yogi Berra is from the ex-coach of the Tampa Bay Lightning, Terry Crisp. This was after a 10-0 loss to the Calgary Flames. He is also famous for the following quotation:
"We can't play stupid hockey, dumb hockey, greedy hockey, selfish hockey. We have to put the team ahead of our personal feelings".
14. Marge Schott, the controversial owner of the Cincinnati Reds has stated many things that have landed her in trouble as well as angered many people. Who was she referring to when she stated this: "Everything you read, when he came in [to power] he was good ...They built tremendous highways and got all the factories going ... Everybody knows he was good at the beginning but he just went too far." ?

Answer: Hitler

Marge stated this on ESPN proving that she did not learn a lesson after being suspended for making derogatory comments about African-Americans. Again, she was viewed as insensitive and a racist.
15. "These guys sit around old phonies ... I call them and sit there and blast and criticize me and say he shouldn't be in the Hall of Fame because he's morally wrong while they sit around getting high on their third or fourth highball." Who stated these seemingly bitter remarks?

Answer: Lawrence Taylor

There was much controversy surrounding Lawrence Taylor's entry into the Hall of Fame due to character flaws as he had been arrested for possession of crack cocaine more than once. The ongoing debate about whether Pete Rose should be in the Hall of Fame sparked much of this up. Taylor, seemingly high during this interview (although he later denied it), was very embittered and lashed out against the writers who he felt were judging him.
