Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What team made the most World Series appearances in the 1960s?

Answer: New York Yankees

The others appeared in only 1 World Series in the decade. The Yankees appeared 5 times, all consecutive from 1960-1964. After a loss to the 1960 Pirates, the Yankees won 2 consecutive Series against the Reds and Giants, then lost 2 consecutive to the Dodgers and Cardinals.
2. In 1961 for the first time in 60 years, baseball began 2 brand new franchises. What teams were they?

Answer: Senators and Angels

After a Washington Senator team moved to Minnesota, baseball started a brand new franchise in Washington. They later moved to Texas to become the Rangers. The Angels began their new franchise as the Los Angeles Angels.
3. In 1962, the Los Angeles Dodgers filed an official protest to Major League Baseball, due to the Dodgers losing to the San Francisco Giants in the playoffs. What caused this protest?

Answer: The Giants saturated their infield to slow down Maury Wills of the Dodgers

Probably the most famous groundskeeper in baseball history, Matty Schwab heavily watered down the infield of Candlestick Park, in an effort to slow down the speedster Maury Wills, who broke Ty Cobb's record and stole 104 bases in the season. The protest was thrown out.
4. In what year did Major League baseball divide the teams into divisions?

Answer: 1969

In 1969, both leagues were expanded to 12 teams, then divided into the divisions.
5. Who won the American League Cy Young Award in 1968?

Answer: Denny McLain

The others were National League pitchers. McLain blistered the league with a 31-6 record for the Tigers. Gibson of the Cardinals won the Award in 1968 for the National League.
6. In 1962, how many games did the New York Mets lose in their inaugural season?

Answer: 120

In the Mets' first season in baseball, and with Casey Stengel at the helm, the New York club finished a dismal 40-120. Pitcher Roger Craig led the team with 10 wins, but lost 24 games in the process.
7. In the 1960s, how many World Series 'skunks' (a team not losing any games) were there?

Answer: 2

Ironically, the Los Angeles Dodgers were on both ends of this. In 1963, they skunked the New York Yankees 4 games to 0, then lost 4 games to 0 at the hands of the Baltimore Orioles in 1966.
8. Who was the Hall of Fame inductee enshrined into the Hall by himself in 1965?

Answer: Pud Galvin

Galvin was inducted into the Hall as a sole inductee in 1965. His induction came 73 years after his retirement. He played for 15 seasons, mostly with the Buffalo Bisons and Pittsburgh Pirates. He retired in 1892.
9. What pitcher in 1966, retired from baseball due to arthritis in his elbow?

Answer: Sandy Koufax

The Dodgers' Koufax was at his peak when he retired in 1966. He went out in style as he won the Triple Crown and the Cy Young Award. This was his 3rd Cy Young Award in 4 seasons.
10. What team in 1969, lasted only one season in baseball?

Answer: Seattle Pilots

Montreal began their new franchise in 1969. Buffalo and the Cleveland organization played in the late 1800s. The Pilots' season in 1969 was a historical one. The last place finish of 64-98, took the team to Milwaukee to become the Brewers the following season in 1970.
