Answer: Ted Williams

Williams was a career Boston Red Sox slugger. On Opening Day against the Senators, Ted hit a 500-foot shot off Washington pitcher Camilo Pascual. It would be the only run for the Red Sox as the Senators won, 10-1. Williams would later hit his 500th home run in the season, then retired at the end of the season with 521.

Answer: New York Yankees

The Yankees broke the record on September 15 with 233, and finished the season with 240. They broke the record of the 1947 Giants, which was later tied by the 1956 Cincinnati Reds. Seven Yankees hit home runs in double-figures in the season, led by Roger Maris with 61, Mickey Mantle with 54, and Bill Skowron with 28.

What made this July 20 game even sweeter, was that it came against their rival Boston Red Sox. The Yankees won the game 6-3. Stottlemyre led the Yankees in 1965 with his 20-9 record. He hit only seven home runs over his 11 seasons, retiring in 1974.

Answer: Roger Maris

The St. Louis Cardinal took his Yankee season home run record memories of 1961 into this 1967 game against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
