Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which U.S. based company was the main shirt sponsors of Manchester United during the 2006-07 Premiership season?

Answer: AIG

United finished the season as champions for the first time in four years. It was United's ninth Premiership title since the competition began in 1992-93. Manager Alec Ferguson called it the greatest achievement of his managerial career.
2. Northeast side Middlesbrough were sponsored by who during the 2006-07 Premiership season?

Answer: 888.com

Middlesbrough finished the season in 12th position. This was a good achievement as the squad consisted of a lot of young players and their manager, Gareth Southgate, who was in his first season as a manager.
The team was founded in 1876 by a group of cricketers who took up the game to stay fit during the winter months.
3. Newcastle United, a Premiership team based in the northeast of England, were sponsored by a beer manufacturer?

Answer: False

Newcastle were in fact sponsored by a financial company, Northern Rock. A season of high expectation ended once again in frustration. The team finished in 13th, one place behind local rivals Middlesborough.
4. Portsmouth were sponsored by which company during the 2006-07 season?

Answer: OKI Printing Solutions

The previous season, Portsmouth were nearly relegated from the Premier League. 2006-07 was a very different story. For most of the season the team was in contention for a place in the 2007-08 European competetions. They just missed out on seventh place, and a UEFA Cup place, as a difficult run-in saw the team finish in a creditable ninth place. With a new multi-millionaire owner, Alexandre Gaydamak, the future looked bright for the Pompey.
5. Reading had their first ever Premiership campaign during the 2006-07 season. They were sponsored by a Japanese company. Which company had their name on the shirts?

Answer: Kyocera

Reading had a terrific first season in the Premiership. Steve Coppell's men surprised many people with their performances. Kyocera has seen the value of shirt sponsorship. During the 2006-07 season they sponsored Borussia Moenchengladbach in Germany, Kyoto Purple Sanga in the Japanese J-League, Atletico Paranaense in Brazil, and Reading in England.
6. Sheffield United were promoted back into the Premiership for the 2006-07 season. They were sponsored by a financial company. Which card was on the front of their shirts?

Answer: Capital One

Sheffield struggled for most of the season. They were relegated in extraordinary circumstances on the last day season following a home defeat by Wigan Athletic. The Blades took the Premier League to court after the season finished. They were not happy with the punishment handed out to West Ham United when the Hammers were found guilty of breaking league rules.

Many people were expecting West Ham to have points deducted for their offence, and a record fine was the punishment instead. This was controversial as Sheffield were relegated on goal difference.
7. London based Tottenham Hotspur were a team sponsored by an online company. Who was it during the 2006-07 Premiership season?

Answer: Mansion

For the second season in a row, Spurs finished the season in fifth place. Yet again, just missing out on qualifying for the 2007-08 Champions League campaign. Tottenham traditionally wore white shirts for their home fixtures. When they were founded they played in navy blue. They changed to white in 1899 as a Tribute to Preston North End who were most successful team of that era.
8. Who was Watford's sponsor for the 2006-07 season?

Answer: Loans.co.uk

Watford were the third team to come up from the championship the previous season. In a similar fashion to Sheffield United, they struggled with life in England's top football league. Unfortunately for Aidy Boothroyd's men they were relegated, finishing in last place. Watford's plight was evident when they had to sell their star player, Ashley Young, to Aston Villa in January 2007.
9. West Ham United were a team sponsored by a web based company, Jobserve.com for the 2006-07 Premiership season?

Answer: True

The Hammers suffered from "second season" syndrome during the 2006-07 season. Promoted for the start of the 2005-06 campaign, the team were a revelation. The opposite was the case for the 2006-07 season. Only a fantastic run of nine games without defeat prevented a return to Championship football.

The team escapes relegation in dramatic circumstances on the last day of the season with an unlikely victory over the new champions, Manchester United, at Old Trafford.
10. A sportswear retailer/manufacturer was the sponsor of Wigan Athletic for the 2006-07 season. Who was it?

Answer: JJB

Wigan suffered similar fortunes to West Ham in both the 2005-06 and 2006-07 seasons. They secured the Premiership status by defeating Sheffield United on the last day of the season. They are sponsored by the company that belongs to their chairman, Dave Whelan. The company also makes the teams kit. Athletic share their ground, the JJB Stadium, with Rugby League giants, Wigan Warriors.
