Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The toss had played a part in all the previous test matches where the winning captain had always chosen to bat first. However, England captain Alastair Cook won the toss and decided to put Australia in. A nice green pitch was produced but at which English test venue?

Answer: Trent Bridge

Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club are the owners of Trent Bridge. This match was the 61st test since the first game played in 1899 between the two sides on show today. That match ended in a draw, a result that England would be happy with, by the end of this test. It was a brave decision on Cook's part to put Australia in to bat, the pitch was quite green and Cook made the decision in part by the fact he had lost Jimmy Anderson through injury in the previous test match. Having both Stuart Broad and Mark Wood to open the bowling convinced Cook that there was significant movement, something the Australians had struggled with at Cardiff and Edgbaston.
2. Australia had a torrid start losing wickets at an alarming rate. After just 18.3 overs the visitors were all out for how many?

Answer: 60

This was a shambles for the Aussies and a real shock to the world of cricket. Broad was superb, bowling with line and length that led to edge after edge. The English slip cordon dropped nothing and the rate of wickets that fell, made for arguably one of the most incredible opening mornings play in the history of the game.
The visitors faced 111 deliveries, a world record for a completed first innings.
3. In their first innings, Australia had three scorers score more 10 or more runs, Michael Clarke 10 and Mitchell Johnson 13, but who or what made 14, the top scorer in the innings?

Answer: Extras/sundries

This was the first time in Ashes history that extras or sundries top scored for either team.

Extras consisted of 3 no balls and 11 leg byes.

The card was sorry reading for the Australians:
Rogers 0
Warner 0
Smith 6
Marsh 0
Clarke 10
Voges 1
Neville 2
Johnson 13
Starc 1
Hazlewood 4
Lyon 9
4. With Jimmy Anderson missing due to injury, Mark Wood came in taking one wicket. However, Stuart Broad, much maligned in the Australian media, created a record of bowling that will be difficult to ever surpass. What was this feat?

Answer: His eight dismissals were caught in the slip cordon

England's bowling card was impressive to say the least. Broad bowled with real line and length that was unplayable, it also helped that the slip cordon caught everything that came its way.

Broad 9.3 overs 5 maidens 15 runs 8 wickets
Wood 3.0 overs 0 maidens 13 runs 1 wicket
Finn 6.0 overs 0 maidens 21 runs 1 wicket
5. England batted just before lunch and through to tea losing three wickets. However, which two England batsmen put on a potentially match winning partnership of 173?

Answer: Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow

Cook played a sensible innings of 43 before he was bowled LBW Starc, Lyth did not fare so well and was out early, caught Neville off Starc for 14.
With England at 96-3 (Bell had gone for 1 earlier LBW Starc) both Root and his Yorkshire team mate Bairstow ripped into the Aussie attack, between them they hitting 31 fours and 1 six to take the game away from their rivals.
6. At the close of day one England had a substantial lead. Which batsmen was not out on 124, more than double the entire Australian team score?

Answer: Joe Root

Bairstow was out for 74 when he was caught for Rogers off Hazlewood. Root went on to score 130, being dismissed early next day.
7. Day two began with a steady stream of superb deliveries from one Australian bowler in particular. Which player managed to take six English wickets in their first innings?

Answer: Mitchell Starc

Starc's bowling was about as good a performance as you could get. He bowled with real zest, pitching superbly a number of vicious wicket taking balls. When Starc is good, he is good but often he can give away cheap runs. His bowling figures 6-111 off 27 overs were impressive but compared to Broad's figures of 8-15, it was expensive.
8. Just before lunch on day two England declared with 391-9 on the scoreboard, a substantial lead. Australia began their second innings knowing a good start was imperative. Despite two dropped catches, both Chris Rogers and David Warner made a decent opening partnership. How many runs did they make for the first wicket before Rogers was caught out?

Answer: 113

Reaching 113 took a lot of guts and a few moments of luck. Rogers had been dropped by Cook and Warner had numerous close shaves with the ball passing his bat. Both men managed to reach 50, showing the Aussies were going to fight. However, Rogers went for 52 being caught by Joe Root off Ben Stokes, whilst Warner followed soon after on 64 caught Broad off Ben Stokes once more.
9. Ben Stokes had the distinction of bowling a milestone delivery early in the afternoon session. What was significant about the ball that David Warner drove through the covers for four?

241-7 became 253 all out within a short period of time. Stokes took the first wicket of the day when he had Mitchel Starc caught by Bell for a duck. Mark Wood finished off the last two wickets with some sublime line and length, removing both Hazelwood and Lyon with exocet like deliveries removing their stumps from the ground.
12. The result was a crushing innings and 78 run victory for England. What impressive stat was created when Stokes ended with figures of 6-36?

Steven Finn took 6-79 at Edgbaston in the third test second innings.
Stuart Broad 8-15 at Trent Bridge in the fourth test first innings.

13. With the Ashes lost with one test to play, what decision did Australia captain Michael Clarke announce at the close of play?

Answer: He announced his retirement from test cricket after Ashes series

Clarke was magnanimous in defeat and gave credit to England in the way they played. He was quick to put his own perfromances as unacceptable and he said was an easy decision to step down allowing younger players to come through.
14. Despite the defeat, Australia batted far better in the second innings than their first innings debacle with three players hitting half centuries. Both openers, Warner and Rogers managed fifties but which other player ended the innings not out on 51?

Answer: Adam Voges

Only Root hit a century (130) from either side. In addition Bairstow hit 74.
Australia had few players make any sort of score but when the last wicket of the match fell, Voges had managed to remain unbeaten on 51.
15. England had won the Ashes with one test to spare, making it four series wins from the last five since 2005. Many players stood up to the mark for England: Broad taking wickets in first innings; Stokes taking six wickets in the second innings; Wood cleaning up the Aussie second innings tail and took some stunning catches. Broad won the man of the match award but what amazing feat did Joe Root achieve with his first innings century which was the top score of the match?

Answer: He sat second only to Don Bradman for highest percentage of a test top scorer (29.02%)

Root's 130 means he had the top score of the match again. He was second on the list of highest percentage of Tests as top scorer (29.02%) behind Don Bradman (38.46%).
Root certainly became a thorn in the Australian bowling attack with scores of 134 and 60 at Cardiff.
