Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. QUALIFIERS: Three of the following teams went through the preliminary qualifying stages undefeated. Which team did NOT go through undefeated?

Answer: Italy

Italy suffered only one defeat during the qualifying campaign for Euro '88, along with Spain, Denmark and Ireland.
2. QUALIFIERS: Of the seven qualifying teams, which team scored the most goals?

Answer: England

England were the best attacking side during the qualifying campaign, scoring 19 while conceding a solitary goal. Italy scored a total of 16, while the Soviet Union and Spain both scored 14.

The Netherlands had an official total of 15 goals, but were forced to replay one of their matches (which they had won 8-0) due to crowd problems. If their original result had been allowed to stand then they would also have had a total of 19.
3. Where was Euro '88 staged?

Answer: West Germany

After another finals campaign at the 1986 World Cup and a close run to glory at Euro '84, the Federal Republic of Germany were given the opportunity of hosting the 1988 European Championships. Germany expected nothing short of victory this time around...
4. GROUP ONE: Who finished atop the table, equal on points, but given first thanks to a superior goal difference?

Answer: West Germany

Germany - Played 3, Won 2, Drew 1, Lost 0, Goals For 5 Goals Against 1 Points 5
Italy - Played 3, Won 2, Drew 1, Lost 0, Goals For 4, Goals Against 1, Points 5
5. GROUP ONE: Denmark and Spain played one of the games of the tournament at the AWD Arena in Hannover. What was the end scoreline?

Answer: Spain 3 - Denmark 2

Spain was the Danish hoodoo team, having been knocked out by the Spaniards at Euro '84 and World Cup '86. A 3-2 victory to the Spaniards gave them a hatrick of victories over Danes at three successive major tournaments.
6. GROUP ONE: Germany and Italy played out a thrilling 1-1 draw at Rheinstadion in Dusseldorf. Who scored the equalizer for the Germans?

Answer: Andreas Brehme

Roberto Mancini had put the Italians in front 1-0 at the 52nd minute, but the Germans hit right back in the 55th minute thanks to a free-kick from Brehme. The Italians were probably unlucky to only draw, but blew too many chances.
7. GROUP TWO: England choke again. How many points did they have after the three group games?

Answer: 0

England were defeated in all three games after again having high expectations. Ireland shocked them 1-0, then they lost to the Netherland 3-1 and to the USSR 3-1. England finished 3-0-0-3 GS 2 GA 7.
8. GROUP TWO: Who finished top of this group?

Answer: USSR

The USSR went through the group stages undefeated with two wins and one draw.
9. GROUP TWO: The final game of group two ended Netherland 1 - Ireland 0. Who scored the lone Dutch goal?

Answer: Willem Kieft

The Irish went home early, but far from disgraced after giving both the USSR and the Netherland something to think about during their games. The Irish fans were labelled the best of the tournament (much like previous World Cup campaigns) and stayed for half an hour after this game.
10. SEMI-FINAL ONE - USSR v Italy: This semi-final was played at the Gottlieb-Daimler Stadium in Stuttgart. What was the end scoreline in USSR's favour?

Answer: 2-0

The Soviets were the better side all game, and although they went to the break at half-time 0-0 and Italy appeared confident, two excellent strikes within four minutes by the Soviets broke Italian hearts and sent the Soviets into the final.
11. SEMI-FINAL ONE - USSR v Italy: Six yellow cards were handed out during the game. Who did not receive a yellow card?

Answer: Roberto Donadoni

USSR players booked: 2' Kuznetsov, 32' Volodymyr Bezsonov 44' Gotsmanov. Italian players booked: 33' Baresi, 78' Fernando de Napoli, 85' Riccardo Ferri.
12. SEMI-FINAL TWO - Netherlands v West Germany: This was the first Dutch win over West Germany since _____ ?

Answer: 1956

The Dutch had to wait 32 years between victories over West Germany, a 2-1 victory over the old enemy taking them through to the final against the USSR.
13. SEMI-FINAL TWO - Netherlands v West Germany: Who scored the first goal of the match?

Answer: Lothar Matthaus

Matthaus opened the scoring after a dire first half, scoring in the 55th minute. The Dutch were not to be denied, however, with Koeman scoring in the 74th minute and then van Basten blasting home one of the great goals of Euro '88 in the 88th minute.
14. FINAL: Where was the final played?

Answer: Olympiastadion, Munich

Munich were proud hosts of the 1988 European final between one of the best attacking sides in the world against a Soviet side jam-packed with superstars. But it was the flair and adventurous nature of the Dutch which gave them a 2-0 victory.
15. FINAL: Who scored the first goal for the Netherlands?

Answer: Ruud Gullit

Gullit opened the scoring for the Dutch in the 32nd minute, who headed in goal after escaping his marker and latching onto a pass from teammate van Basten. In the 54th minute, van Basten completed an amazing personal tournament with another classic strikers goal. The Netherlands captured their only major tournament cup up to that point.
