Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which state was Evander born?

Answer: Alabama

Holyfield was born in Atmore, Alabama on October 19, 1962. He and his family moved to Atlanta, Georgia, when Evander was just two years old.
2. Holyfield was part of a very strong USA boxing team at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games, and was predicted to do well in his event. What medal did he win?

Answer: Bronze

Holyfield was controversially disqualified in the second round of his semi-final bout against New Zealander, Kevin Barry. In Olympic boxing, both beaten semi-finalists receive bronze medals. Nine of the twelve USA boxers won gold medals, including Meldrick Taylor, Pernell Whittaker, and Mark Breland.
3. He turned professional after the 1984 Olympics, but in which weight division did he make his pro debut?

Answer: Light-Heavyweight

Holyfield's professional bow was on November 15, 1984, in a six-round victory against Lionel Byarm, in the same light-heavyweight division that he had won his Olympic bronze medal. He had three further fights at that weight before moving up to cruiserweight.
4. In just his 12th fight as a pro, Holyfield won the WBA Cruiserweight title after a hard fought 15 rounds. Who did he beat to claim his first world champion's belt?

Answer: Dwight Muhammad Qawi

Holyfield actually defeated all four in world title bouts at cruiserweight. After winning his first title with a split-decision victory over Qawi, he had two further fights before he beat Parkey to add the IBF title to the WBA crown. A successful defense against Ocasio was followed by a rematch with Qawi, which Holyfield won with a 4th round KO.

His final fight at cruiserweight came when becoming undisputed champion by taking Carlos DeLeon's WBC belt.
5. When he became world champion, Holyfield made the first defense of his title against one of his 1984 USA Olympic teammates. Which gold medal-winning fighter was it?

Answer: Henry Tillman

Holyfield won with a 7th round TKO. Tillman later fought Mike Tyson, losing by 1st round KO. Biggs also fought Tyson for the world heavyweight championship, also losing by KO. Tate was IBF middleweight champ after Marvin Hagler was stripped of his title. Hill only won silver at the '84 Olympics, but he did become a five-time world champion as a pro, winning his final title at the age of 42.
6. After vacating the undisputed cruiserweight championship, Evander had just six fights before fighting for the undisputed heavyweight crown. Who did he defeat to become world champ once more?

Answer: Buster Douglas

Douglas had landed one of the biggest shocks in boxing history when dethroning the seemingly invincible Mike Tyson, but lost his title in his first defense when Holyfield KO'd him in the 3rd round. Both Dokes and Thomas were former world champions, while Tillis had fought twice, unsuccessfully, for the title and had also taken Mike Tyson the distance. Holyfield defeated all three on his way to his challenge for the heavyweight crown.
7. Holyfield made three successful defenses of his undisputed heavyweight championship before suffering his first defeat as a professional. Which boxer took his titles?

Answer: Riddick Bowe

Holyfield lost against Bowe (twice), Lewis, and Moorer during his career.
8. After beating Alex Stewart in his first fight after losing his belts, Holyfield challenged Riddick Bowe for the WBA and IBF titles, winning a sensational fight by majority decison to become champ again. The fight was subject to a lengthy delay during round seven due to what?

Answer: A parachutist landed in the ring

James Miller, also known as 'Fan Man', circled above Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas before his parachute became entangled in the overhead lights and Miller landed on the top rope of the ring before being set upon by angry spectators. He later performed similar acts of lunacy at a Denver Broncos-LA Raiders NFL game, and also at Buckingham Palace, among others.
9. Holyfield emulated Muhammad Ali when winning the heavyweight title for a third time, by knocking out Mike Tyson in the 11th round. By what method did he win their rematch?

Answer: 3rd round disqualification

With around 40 seconds left in round 3, Tyson bit Holyfield's right ear, and the referee Mills Lane called a timeout. He deducted two points from Tyson and the fight recommenced. In the short time left in the round Tyson managed to bite the left ear as well before the fight was called off, with Tyson disqualified.
10. What was Evander Holyfield's nickname?

Answer: The Real Deal

One of the modern era's great fighters, this warrior deserved his nickname. The other three nicknames belong to baseball stars Joe DiMaggio (Yankee Clipper), Frank Thomas (Big Hurt), and Randy Johnson (Big Unit).
