Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was Ferrari's 'top' (that is, has the lowest number on his car) driver for the 2007 season?

Answer: Felipe Massa

To the surprise of many fans, it was Massa who was chosen as the number one driver, in essence filling in Schumacher's car. Kimi Raikkonen was put in the second car. If you watched it on TV you would have noticed this, and that Massa's car had the red camera box, symbolising 'first car'.
2. Spyker, a Dutch consortium, bought cars off Midland, who bought them off Jordan. They also inherited a Dutch driver that they kept on. Who was this driver?

Answer: Christijan Albers

2007 was his third season in Formula One. His highest race finish was fifth, during the 2005 U.S. Grand Prix with Bridgestone only runners. Adrian Sutil was his German teammate in Spyker.
3. Hailed as the best British driver since Coulthard was on form, and maybe even better than Nigel Mansell, this young lad from Tewin had 2007 as his first ever season after being offered a drive from McLaren. Who is he?

Answer: Lewis Hamilton

Lewis Hamilton had the best start to a season any debutant had ever had, getting two second places in the first three races and finishing third, and on the podium for his first. He had been pinned as Britain's best hope for a world championship, and one of the 'new generation who will challenge Schumacher's records'.
4. Who was Renault's Finnish driver who spent a year as Renault's third driver before moving up to take the place of Alonso, and was yet another new driver to start in the first post-Schumacher season?

Answer: Heikki Kovalainen

Kovalainen, once when asked on British TV if he felt much pressure being a 'rookie' (ITV's words) filling Alonso's seat, replied, "Not really, no. Everyone is too focused on Raikkonen and his Ferrari back in Finland. Is better for me, I think." Heikki started racing single seaters in 2001 and made it into the big time in 2005 as Renault's test driver, also finishing behind Nico Rosberg in GP2.
5. Which team did the sole remaining (driving) Schumacher in Formula One race for in 2007?

Answer: Toyota

Ralf Schumacher, brother of the more famous Michael Schumacher, was lucky to still be racing after a freak accident in the U.S. Grand Prix in 2005 when he was driving for Williams. His concerned brother tried to stop for him but Ferrari prevented him, telling him Ralf was alright. Since then, Schumacher Jr. has been in the midfield, having little of the success of his elder brother.
6. Anthony Davidson made his long-anticipated entrance into full time Formula One in 2007. The team he raced for caused some controversy at the start of the season by using a clone of the 2006 season parent team's chassis. Which team is this?

Answer: Super Aguri

Super Aguri are part owned by Honda and were running a modified Honda 2006 chassis. However, from the clues you could be mistaken for thinking Toro Rosso because they've been accused of cloning the Red Bull chassis for the 2007 season (Red Bull owned both teams.

The name 'Toro Rosso' gave it away as Toro Rosso is Italian for Red Bull). As it was, Davidson's first season had been overshadowed in Britain by the arrival of Lewis Hamilton.
7. As the only American Formula One driver on the 2007 main field, he was notorious for accidents and breaking down. His name was quite appropriate considering his career. Who is he?

Answer: Scott Speed

Scott Speed comes from Manteca, USA, and drove the 2007 season for Torro Rosso, Red Bull's second team. His highest race finish was ninth in 2006. In his second race in 2006 in the Malaysian Grand Prix, he retired after 41 laps due to a clutch malfunction.

After the 2006 Australian Grand Prix, he had 25 seconds added to his race time for overtaking under yellow flags. He was also fined for swearing at Coulthard afterwards. He retired from the Spanish Grand Prix with an engine failure. He retired from the British Grand Prix on the opening lap with accident damage after coming together with R. Schumacher.

He was also caught up in an accident during his first U.S. Grand Prix. Speed also crashed in practice for the German and French Grand Prix.

In Japan, he suffered power steering failure but was classified as he finished more than 90% of the race.
8. The news came at Monza in 2006 when Michael Schumacher, the one and only, was retiring from driving in Formula One. He hoped to win one more championship before the end. Which then Renault driver that drove for McLaren in 2007 took the title?

Answer: Fernando Alonso

Fernando Alonso moved to McLaren as Kimi Raikkonen's seat was vacated when he moved to fill Schumacher's seat at Scuderia Ferrari. Fisichella became top driver at Renault and Heikki Kovalainen filled the spare Renault seat. Alonso's 2006 title was the second he won.
9. Takuma Sato was sacked from Honda at the end of 2005 to make room for another driver. Which Brazilian driver took his Honda race seat and kept it into the 2007 season?

Answer: Rubens Barrichello

Barrichello took the drive at Honda as teammate to Jenson Button after he left the Ferrari team (left or was pushed?). He retained his Honda drive for 2007 after finishing seventh in the drivers' championship in 2006. Of the others, Felipe Massa was Ferrari's top man for 2007, Bruno Senna was a GP2 driver for 2007, and nephew of one of Brazil's most famous race drivers, Ayrton Senna, who was killed in an accident during the restart of the San Marino Grand Prix, May 1 1994.
10. After Takuma Sato was sacked from Honda, the Japanese people started to boycott Honda products. In an attempt to abate this, Honda helped purchase the old Arrow's chassis and prepare them for the 2006 season regulations. Takuma Sato got his race ride. What team, the same as 2006, did he drive for in 2007?

Answer: Super Aguri

Takuma Sato raced for Super Aguri with his teammate for 2007 being Anthony Davidson. Super Aguri had been criticized for using a version of 2006s Honda chassis.
11. The top driver for Williams Toyota in 2007 was the son of the 1982 World Champion. He raced under the German banner because of his German race license and his Mother's nationality. However, his Father was the first Finn to regularly race. Who is this 2007 team leader?

Answer: Nico Rosberg

Nico Rosberg, managed by his father Keke Rosberg (who also managed World Champion Mika Hakkinen), was born in Wiesbaden, Germany, and his race license is German. During the test for aptitude taken by all prospective Williams drivers, he scored the highest score ever. In his first race, he scored a point in seventh place and got a fastest lap, not bad for someone in their debut season.
12. After racing for two seasons with Williams, his contract expired and Mark Webber started looking for a new drive. He moved to a team whose 2007 engine supply was coming from his manager's team. What team is this?

Answer: Red Bull Racing

The 2007 Red Bull cars were fitted with Renault engines. Mark Webber was managed by Flavio Briatore who runs Renault. The new Red Bull car was designed by Adrian Newey, who had designed championship winning cars before. Mark Webber started off at Minardi, moved to Jaguar, and in 2005 signed for Williams. Ironically, after leaving Williams and moving to Red Bull, he moved back to the team that used to be Jaguar, completing the circle.
13. After a row with Williams BMW bought the Sauber team and started racing as BMW Sauber, they inherited two drivers, Jacques Villeneuve and Nick Heidfeld. The manager of BMW fell out with Villeneuve, and mid-season 2006 they found an excuse to cancel his contract and replace him with the first Polish driver in F1. In 2007, he was permanently given a race seat and became the first Pole to race full time in Formula One. Who is he?

Answer: Robert Kubica

Kubica entered Formula one in 2006 as the test driver for BMW Sauber. However, when they fell out with Villeneuve, Kubica was promoted and scored points in his first ever race, however was disqualified for an underweight car. In his third race he finished third and on the podium, as well as having led the race for a time during pit stops.

But it doesn't matter, his records are first pole on the podium, first pole to lead a race, and first pole to score World Championship points.
14. Wurz was promoted to a drive for 2007 after the team refused to renew the original driver's contract. However, he had been a test driver for them in the 2006 season, and had spells with Benetton and as test driver for McLaren. But which team was he racing for in 2007?

Answer: Williams

Alexander Wurz is tall for a F1 driver and was originally going to move to Jaguar, but the move was vetoed by McLaren as they needed his technical skills. He signed as reserve driver for Williams in 2006 and he moved up to his first full time drive since 2000 in 2007, replacing Mark Webber. He shared the team with Nico Rosberg.
15. Which driver was Felipe Massa's teammate in 2007 at Ferrari?

Answer: Kimi Raikkonen

Raikkonen announced the move after Michael Schumacher decided to retire, despite the fact he didn't win a race in 2006 with McLaren. His departure left the gate open for Alonso's move to McLaren for 2007.
