Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who won the pole position for this final, and historic, Winston Cup race?

Answer: Jamie McMurray

McMurray set a new track qualifying record for this race. This was Jamie's first career Winston Cup pole.
2. Which driver led the first lap?

Answer: Brian Vickers

Vickers was the 2003 Busch Series winner. Brian and the UAW Chevrolet's day ended on lap 121, when he blew a right front tire in the straight away, and tore up the right side of the car in the wall all by himself.
3. Who caused the first yellow flag in the race?

Answer: Kevin Harvick

Harvick came out of turn 2 on lap 3, making it three-wide with Kurt Busch and Ryan Newman. Kevin in the #29 car lost traction and slid up into Newman and Busch, putting the latter in the wall. Former winner Tony Stewart was also involved in this. Harvick came from last place as a result of this incident, to 1st place by lap 129.
4. Who was the 2nd leader of the race?

Answer: Jeff Gordon

Gordon took the lead on lap 14. Rusty Wallace was the third leader of the race to get his lap-leading bonus points.
5. Prior to the race, Richard Petty led a ceremonious lap with the field behind him. Who did King Richard hand the reins of the #43 car over to, for the start of the race?

Answer: Jeff Green

Jeff Green replaced the #43 ride of John Andretti, who parted company with owner Richard Petty for the season. Jeff later lost his engine in lap 81, which ended his day.
6. Which driver was the first to blow an engine in the race?

Answer: Matt Kenseth

Kenseth in only his 2nd DNF (did not finish) of the 2003 season, had his engine let go on lap 28. He finished last in the race. Ironically, he won the 2003 Winston Cup championship the prior weekend.
7. How did Michael Waltrip's chances of winning this final Winston Cup race end?

Answer: He blew the right front tire

This happened on lap 77 to his NAPA Chevrolet. This allowed Dale Earnhardt Jr. to win the McDonald's point standings for some big money, as Michael and Dale Jr. were tied going into this last WC race.
8. What was the new "Lucky Dog" rule?

Answer: The first car that is down 1 lap at a caution flag, is positioned at the end of the lead lap.

NASCAR developed what is called, 'Lucky Dog' rule in 2003, which when a caution flag occurs, the driver who is the first driver 1 lap down, gets to go to the back of the field on the lead lap. This rule has changed the position of numerous drivers in a race, and has had the support of all drivers.
9. Which driver was the leader at the 'half-way' point in the race?

Answer: Bill Elliott

Elliott, who won the race the week prior, took over the lead from Kevin Harvick, who crashed earlier in the race. On the same lap, Craven was in the pits with a blown left rear tire. Two laps later, Jeremy Mayfield literally lost his left rear tire also. The track was hard on tires.
10. In the final 9 laps, leader Bill Elliott fought off Bobby Labonte in 2nd, with Johnny Benson and Jimmie Johnson in 3rd and 4th. Who won the race?

Answer: Bobby Labonte

Elliott had a flat tire on the last lap. Labonte passed him in an exciting finish. Elliott had led 189 of 269 laps. The final lap was Bobby Labonte's only lap lead, and his first career win at Homestead, in the final race of the Winston Cup Series.
