Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these Major League Baseball brothers did not play on the same team in the same season at some point in their careers?

Answer: Greg and Mike Maddux

The Sherry's were a Dodger battery with Larry on the mound and Norm doing the catching from 1959-1962. The Torre's played together on the Milwaukee Braves in 1960. Joe went on to a great managing career. Pedro and Ramon pitched for both the Dodgers and Red Sox together on the same roster. Greg Maddux and brother Mike never pitched together. Greg retired after 23 seasons in 2008 with 355 wins. Mike played for 15 seasons, mostly out of the bullpen.

He won 39 games.
2. All these Hall of Famers went to only one World Series in their career. One of them didn't shine when their time came. Which of the following did not bat over .375 in their only chance in the big time?

Answer: Ted Williams

Kaline went to the 1968 series with the Tigers. Al batted .379 with two home runs. Waner went to the 1927 World Series with his brother Paul against the Yankees. Lloyd batted .400 in the series in their loss. Doerr went to the 1946 World Series with Ted Williams. Bobby batted .409 and hit a home run, while Ted batted .200, going 5-for-25 and struck out five times.
3. Which Major League team in the 1990s won their division by 30 games over the second place team?

Answer: Cleveland Indians

The Indians won 100 games in the 1995 season. It wasn't so much that the Indians were beyond great, but it came down to who else was in their division. Every other team in the AL Central finished below .500, including the second place Kansas City Royals who went 70-74, finishing 30 games behind the Indians.

The White Sox finished 32 games back, the Brewers 35 games, and the Twins were 44 games behind. The second biggest gap in the decade was in 1998 when the Yankees took the AL East by 22 games ahead of the second place Red Sox.
4. How many times did fans see a pitcher lose 20 games in a season during the 1970s?

Answer: 13

Denny McLain lost 22 with the Senators in 1971 to be the first in the decade. Others to follow suit were Steve Arlin of the Padres in 1972, then Steve Carlton and Stan Bahnsen in 1973. In 1974, five pitchers lost 20 or more in Mickey Lolich, Clyde Wright, Bill Bonham, Randy Jones, and Steve Rogers. Wilbur Wood lost 20 in 1975 for the White Sox.

In 1977, both Jerry Koosman and Phil Niekro lost 20 each. Niekro would repeat in 1979.
5. Which of these professional baseball leagues that went defunct, lasted the most seasons?

Answer: American Association

The American Association was on the charts in 10 seasons from 1882-1891. They made a run to combine with the National League, but just didn't have the financial backing to stay afloat. The first winner of the AA league was the Cincinnati Red Stockings.

The National Association lasted for five seasons from 1871-1875. The Federal League tried to become a third Major League in 1914 before it folded after the 1915 season. The Union Association lasted only one season in 1884. The UA fielded 12 teams with the St. Louis Maroons taking the league's only pennant.
6. Who was the first pitcher in history to play in both the American and National League, and lead each league with the most wins in a season?

Answer: Cy Young

All these pitching greats led both leagues in wins, but the great Cy Young was the first. Young led the National League twice with the Cleveland Spiders in 1892 and 1895. When the American League came around in 1901, Young led the league's first season by winning 33 games for the Boston Americans. He would lead the AL in 1902 and 1903 with Boston also.
7. Which pitcher set a record by winning at least 14 games in five consecutive seasons with five different teams?

Answer: Mike Torrez

Torrez was in his eighth season in 1974. He went 15-8 for the Expos in the season, and to show their appreciation, they traded him to the Orioles. For Baltimore in 1975, Mike went 20-9, then they traded him to the Athletics. He won 16 games for the Athletics in 1976, then they traded him to the Yankees in 1977 where Mike won 14 in the pinstripes.

After the 1977 season, the Yankees let him go to free agency, then Mike won another 16 for the Red Sox in 1978.
8. How many total teams played at least one game in the National League's first-ever season?

Answer: 8

There were eight teams in the National League's 1876 inaugural season, and they all played at least 55 of the 70 games scheduled, unlike the previous National Association. In order of finish were the pennant-winning Chicago White Stockings, then the Hartford Dark Blues, St. Louis Brown Stockings, Boston Red Caps, Louisville Grays, New York Mutuals, Philadelphia Athletics, and Cincinnati Reds.

The Philadelphia Athletics and New York Mutuals did not return for the 1877 season, leaving the league to play with only six teams.
9. How many franchises moved from one city to another in the 1960s?

Answer: 3

The Washington Senators moved to Minnesota to become the Twins in 1961. The Braves moved from Milwaukee to Atlanta in 1966. The Athletics moved from Kansas City to Oakland in 1968. In April 1970, a bankruptcy judge ruled that the Seattle Pilots could move to become the Milwaukee Brewers.
10. Which of these Hall of Fame catchers hit the most home runs in their career?

Answer: Johnny Bench

The Hall of Famer Bench led this group with 389 home runs over 17 seasons with the Reds. Fisk hit 376 over 24 seasons. Berra hit 358 with the Yankees over 18 seasons. Carter hit 324 in his 19 seasons.
