1. Who was the first pitcher in baseball history to throw 2000 walks in his career (and was still a Hall of Fame inductee)?

Answer: Nolan Ryan

Not only was Ryan the first to hit the 2000 and 2500 mark, by the end of the 20th century he was the only pitcher to even throw 1900 walks. Not even Steve Carlton and Phil Niekro, who were noted for walks, reached 1850. Ryan threw 2795 walks, and strangely enough threw a record 5714 career strikeouts.

Answer: Baltimore Orioles

They began it all in 1901 with the new American League as the Baltimore Orioles. Managed by John McGraw, they finished in fifth place of eight teams. After their last place finish in 1902, the franchise packed up and moved to New York to become the Highlanders. Still without a league pennant to their name, they would change their name to the Yankees in 1913. In 1921, the franchise finally won an American League crown, but lost to the New York Giants in the World Series.

Phillies third baseman Mike Schmidt was the World Series MVP.

Minton was a San Francisco Giant reliever from 1975-1987. In 1982, Minton set this record over four seasons. He was thwarted by five home runs in the 1982 season. Greg retired after four seasons with the Angels with a 56-65 record while giving up only 43 home runs. He averaged giving up only home run every 26.2 innings in his career.

Only Gehrig was living when he was inducted in 1939, then died in 1941. Christy Mathewson was a giant of a pitcher with the New York Giants of the National League from 1900-1916. All but one of his 635 games were with the Giants, and a lone appearance was his last career game with the Reds. Christy was one of the first five inductees in 1936. He died in 1925 at the age of 45, after compiling 373 career wins.

Nicknamed Ol' Stubblebeard, the Yankee pitcher won his final Major League game with number 270. The win was over the Senators 5-4. His spitball rule was grandfathered in with him and others, and he was the last active pitcher to use it. He led the league in wins twice and with strikeouts once. The hall inducted him in 1964. In the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s, spitball king Gaylord Perry apparently never received the rule change.

The birth of the National League was in 1876 with eight teams. William Hulbert was given credit to this new creation. The Chicago White Stockings were the first team to win this title. The other teams in the league depicted the St. Louis Brown Stockings, Hartford Dark Blues, Boston Red Caps, Louisvillle Grays, New York Mutuals, Philadelphia Athletics, and the Cincinnati Reds. The National League was born one season after the folding of the National Association which had lasted for five years. The NA had 25 teams in it. The American Association gave a run at the National League in 1882, but folded after 10 seasons in 1891.

Jack Dunn, who had handled many baseball players as their agent, had initially wanted to keep the Babe for a few more seasons. Dunn was going under when the Federal League put a team in Baltimore, so he searched out a way to get some quick money. He was offered to the A's, but Connie Mack was not impressed with Ruth, as he only hit one Minor League home run in his career in 1914. Dunn then contacted the Red Sox owner Joe Lannin, and the rest was history. John McGraw of the Giants was furious because he had wanted Ruth for the Giants.

Haas gave up 15 runs and 11 hits to the New York Yankees. By the end of the day he had walked 16 batters, a mark unequalled for a nine inning game. He also uncorked 3 wild pitches. At the end of the year, Haas vanished from the majors. Some said he just "walked" away.
