MLB Historical Challenge Trivia Questions

1. Who was the first pitcher in baseball history to throw 2000 walks in his career (and was still a Hall of Fame inductee)?

From Quiz
Want to Get Beaned?

Answer: Nolan Ryan

Not only was Ryan the first to hit the 2000 and 2500 mark, by the end of the 20th century he was the only pitcher to even throw 1900 walks. Not even Steve Carlton and Phil Niekro, who were noted for walks, reached 1850. Ryan threw 2795 walks, and strangely enough threw a record 5714 career strikeouts.

2. The New York Yankee franchise has a storied history. What was the franchise's team name when they began in Major League Baseball?

From Quiz Head Crusher Baseball

Answer: Baltimore Orioles

They began it all in 1901 with the new American League as the Baltimore Orioles. Managed by John McGraw, they finished in fifth place of eight teams. After their last place finish in 1902, the franchise packed up and moved to New York to become the Highlanders. Still without a league pennant to their name, they would change their name to the Yankees in 1913. In 1921, the franchise finally won an American League crown, but lost to the New York Giants in the World Series.

3. The Philadelphia Phillies won their first-ever World Series crown in 1980. Which Phillies pitcher was on the mound when the final out was made to give them the crown?

From Quiz Blistery History [5]

Answer: Tug McGraw

The Phillies faced the Kansas City Royals, winning game one, two, five, and six. McGraw came into the game in the eighth inning to relieve starter Steve Carlton. The final three outs were provided by Amos Otis who struck out looking, Frank White's infield foul pop flyout, then Willie Wilson's strikeout. Phillies third baseman Mike Schmidt was the World Series MVP.

4. Who was the first player to hit a pinch-hit World Series home run?

From Quiz Blistery History [1]

Answer: Yogi Berra

The Yankee Berra did this on October 2, 1947, in game three of the World Series against the Dodgers. The Dodgers still won that game, but the Yankees won the series, four games to three. The first player in history to hit two pinch-hit World Series home runs was Dodger Chuck Essegian in game two and six in the 1959 series against the White Sox.

5. Which pitcher in the 1980s set a Major League record by throwing 269.3 innings in relief without giving up a single home run?

From Quiz Blistery History [2]

Answer: Greg Minton

Minton was a San Francisco Giant reliever from 1975-1987. In 1982, Minton set this record over four seasons. He was thwarted by five home runs in the 1982 season. Greg retired after four seasons with the Angels with a 56-65 record while giving up only 43 home runs. He averaged giving up only home run every 26.2 innings in his career.

6. The Hall of Fame began inducting players into the immortal hall in 1936. Who was the first player inducted into the Hall of Fame after he had died?

From Quiz The Last Standing

Answer: Christy Mathewson

Only Gehrig was living when he was inducted in 1939, then died in 1941. Christy Mathewson was a giant of a pitcher with the New York Giants of the National League from 1900-1916. All but one of his 635 games were with the Giants, and a lone appearance was his last career game with the Reds. Christy was one of the first five inductees in 1936. He died in 1925 at the age of 45, after compiling 373 career wins.

7. In 1934, pitcher Burleigh Grimes was the last player to do what?

From Quiz Baseball for Grandpas

Answer: Legally throw a spit ball

Nicknamed Ol' Stubblebeard, the Yankee pitcher won his final Major League game with number 270. The win was over the Senators 5-4. His spitball rule was grandfathered in with him and others, and he was the last active pitcher to use it. He led the league in wins twice and with strikeouts once. The hall inducted him in 1964. In the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s, spitball king Gaylord Perry apparently never received the rule change.

8. Who was the first player in history to record 3000 strikeouts, and have less than 1000 walks at the same time?

From Quiz Baseball Stitches [3]

Answer: Ferguson Jenkins

The others fell well short of striking out 3000 in their career, and they all walked more than 1000. Jenkins reached this milestone as a member of the Cubs in 1982. He still retired in 1983 with less than 1000 walks, while striking out 3192. Fergie also played for the Phillies, Rangers, and Red Sox.

9. In 2002, which National League player set a record for having 19 total bases in one game, amongst his four home runs?

From Quiz Baseball Stitches [1]

Answer: Shawn Green

The others were all American Leaguers. On May 23rd against the Brewers, Green went 6-for-6 in the nine inning game that his Dodgers won, 16-3. Green hit four home runs, a double, and a single, while having seven RBIs in the game.

10. Which league folded just one year before the National League began in 1876?

From Quiz Grandpa's Baseball: Vol. 1

Answer: National Association

The National Association had a run from 1871-1875. They are credited to having the first professional organized league in baseball. The NA began with five teams in 1871, and finished with 13 in 1875. A total of 25 teams tried to stay afloat in the league in those five seasons. Philadelphia won the first crown, then the Boston Red Stockings (later Braves) won the remaining four.

11. In 1970, Yankee Mel Stottlemyre pitched a shutout before being relieved with one out in the ninth inning of a game. What was strange about that game?

From Quiz Grandpa's Baseball: Vol. 2

Answer: He walked 11 batters

It was May 21 in a game against the Washington Senators. Steve Hamilton came in for Stottlemyre in relief in the ninth, and struck out the two remaining batters. Strangely enough, in 271 innings in the season, Mel gave up only 84 walks, but 11 in this one game. The Yankees won 2-0.

12. In Major League Baseball, what is the significance of the number 192?

From Quiz True Baseball History

Answer: It is the record for most runs scored in a season

Billy Hamilton scored an awesome 192 runs in 1894 setting a record that had withstood 113 seasons without being repeated. As if that weren't enough, he also had a .404 average that season. Hamilton set the runs record while playing in Philadelphia.

13. What was the name of the first organized baseball team?

From Quiz The Origins of Baseball

Answer: Knickerbocker Baseball Club of New York

The 1846 team who was owned by Alexander Cartwright, and playing under Cartwright rules, played the first organized baseball game on June 19, 1846.

14. In which year was the National League born?

From Quiz Grandpa Baseball

Answer: 1876

The birth of the National League was in 1876 with eight teams. William Hulbert was given credit to this new creation. The Chicago White Stockings were the first team to win this title. The other teams in the league depicted the St. Louis Brown Stockings, Hartford Dark Blues, Boston Red Caps, Louisvillle Grays, New York Mutuals, Philadelphia Athletics, and the Cincinnati Reds. The National League was born one season after the folding of the National Association which had lasted for five years. The NA had 25 teams in it. The American Association gave a run at the National League in 1882, but folded after 10 seasons in 1891.

15. When Babe Ruth was playing Minor League baseball, which Major League team had the first chance to sign him, but passed him up?

From Quiz Coronary Baseball

Answer: Philadelphia Athletics

Jack Dunn, who had handled many baseball players as their agent, had initially wanted to keep the Babe for a few more seasons. Dunn was going under when the Federal League put a team in Baltimore, so he searched out a way to get some quick money. He was offered to the A's, but Connie Mack was not impressed with Ruth, as he only hit one Minor League home run in his career in 1914. Dunn then contacted the Red Sox owner Joe Lannin, and the rest was history. John McGraw of the Giants was furious because he had wanted Ruth for the Giants.

16. In which year did the American League join professional baseball?

From Quiz Nightmare Baseball

Answer: 1901

The American League began in 1901 with eight teams. They were the Chicago White Sox, Detroit Tigers, Boston Red Sox, Philadelphia Athletics, Baltimore Orioles, Washington Senators, Cleveland Blues, and the Milwaukee Brewers. The White Sox won the first American League title with a 83-53 record, winning four games ahead of the Red Sox.

17. What pitcher once set a record for walks in a 9 inning game with 16?

From Quiz MLB Hall Of Shame

Answer: Bruno Haas

On June 23, 1915, Haas, in his debut for the Philadelphia A's, strode to the mound in his new uniform. Any similarity between him and a major league pitcher ended there. Haas gave up 15 runs and 11 hits to the New York Yankees. By the end of the day he had walked 16 batters, a mark unequalled for a nine inning game. He also uncorked 3 wild pitches. At the end of the year, Haas vanished from the majors. Some said he just "walked" away.
