Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Tunisia and England had an interesting match that turned out to be harder for the European squad than they could have imagined. It looked like the game would end 1-1, but in the 91st minute (already in stoppage time), a ball from a corner kick gave England the perfect opportunity to score, thus winning them the match. Which of these players, who started his professional career at Tottenham Hotspur, scored the game-winning goal?

Answer: Harry Kane

At the beginning of the match, England had several opportunities, which seemed to indicate that they would obtain an easy win. The Tunisian team gave a great battle though and, at half-time, the match was tied 1-1. In what looked like what would be the last action of the match, England took a corner kick and Harry Maguire headed the ball softly, allowing Kane (who was completely free) to sharply use his head to score his second goal of the match. This was the first time in history that England won a World Cup match with a goal scored in stoppage time.

Harry Kane joined Arsenal's youth team at a very young age. He also spent some time in the youth academies of Ridgeway Rovers and Watford, before joining Tottenham Hotspur in 2004. Even though he signed a professional contract with them in 2010, he was loaned to a variety of different teams, such as Leyton Orient, Norwich City, and Leicester City. He then returned to Tottenham in 2013, and that is when his career really took off! In the 2015-2016 season, for instance, he was the Premier League's top goalscorer, with 25 goals. Kane also ended as the 2018 World Cup's top goalscorer, with 6 goals.
2. The first match of Group H was Colombia vs Japan, and it became exciting from the moment the match began. Japan quickly started attacking, and after a shot by Shinji Kagawa, a penalty kick was given due to an offense committed by defender Carlos Sanchez, costing him a red card. What did Sanchez do, ultimately resulting in Japan's first goal?

Answer: Blocked the shot with his arm

Emotions started very early on, just 3 minutes after Slovenian referee Damir Skomina kicked off the match. Japan's Osako seemed to have a good goalscoring opportunity, but his shot was stopped by goalkeeper Ospina. Shinji Kagawa shot again but, this time, Colombian defender Carlos Sanchez was standing right across him and for some reason decided to lift his right arm, stopping the ball and immediately prompting the referee to award a penalty. Because the action involved the denial of an obvious goalscoring opportunity (as stated in Law 12 of the Laws of the Game), Skomina also decided to show a red card to Sanchez. Several records were broken: Sanchez was the first player to be sent off in Russia 2018, and also became the first-ever Colombian player to see a red card in a World Cup.

Shinji Kagawa, who has played for important clubs like Manchester United and Borussia Dortmund, successfully took the penalty kick, which was interestingly Japan's first-ever World Cup penalty.
3. Colombia vs Japan: Just before the end of the first half, Colombia obtained a free kick. The ball surprisingly went under the wall of Japanese players as they jumped, and goal-line technology determined that the goal was in fact valid. Which of these Colombian players, who has played for clubs like Porto and River Plate, scored this great free kick?

Answer: Juan Fernando Quintero

Quintero surprised everyone when his shot went under the wall; Japanese players clearly were not expecting that! (in fact, most of them jumped, allowing the ball to go through freely). The ball barely crossed the line, but the goal was awarded by the referee despite the goalkeeper's objection, as goal-line technology helped determine the ball was in. Quintero's goal was special in many ways: it was the first-ever free kick goal by Colombia in a World Cup, and it was the first-ever free kick in a World Cup to be scored after going under the wall.

Juan Fernando Quintero was born in 1993 in Medellin, Colombia. He began his career in Colombian clubs Envigado and Atletico Nacional, and in 2012 quickly transitioned into European soccer, playing for teams in Italy (Pescara), Portugal (Porto), and Rennes (France). In 2018, Porto lent him to popular Argentine club River Plate, a team with which he won the 2018 Copa Libertadores. Quintero had also scored in the 2014 World Cup when Colombia played the Ivory Coast, meaning that he became the first Colombian player in history to score in two different World Cups.
4. Colombia vs Japan: In the 73rd minute, Japan's Yuya Osako scored from a corner kick. It was the goal that would give the Asian side their first victory in Russia 2018, by 2-1. Which part of his body did Osako use to score the goal?

Answer: Head

The match was tied 1-1 at half-time, after which not too many interesting plays happened. At the 73rd minute mark, Japan took a corner kick and Osako did not miss the golden opportunity he received. He leaped up in the air, beating a swarm of Colombian defenders, and strongly headed the ball into the net. With this goal, Japan became the first Asian national squad to defeat a South American representative.

The scorer of the 2018 World Cup's 35th goal was Yuya Osako, a forward who has spent much of his career in Germany, playing for clubs like 1860 Munich, 1. FC Koln, and Werder Bremen. This was Osako's only goal in the competition. Japan and Colombia both made it through the group stage, and they were both eliminated in the round of 16.
5. June 19, the opening day for Group H, also featured Poland playing against Senegal. Which of these Polish players, who was actually born in Brazil, had the misfortune of scoring an own goal, giving Senegal a temporary 1-0 lead?

Answer: Thiago Cionek

The match was the first ever played between the two countries. Senegal was playing their second World Cup after the 2002 World Cup, where they performed very well and became only the third African team to reach the quarter-finals stage in a World Cup. Poland was playing well in the months leading to Russia 2018 and had high expectations for their star forward Robert Lewandowski.

In the 37th minute of an otherwise uneventful match, Polish defender Thiago Cionek accidentally deflected the ball into his own net, allowing Senegal to leave the first half with a partial victory. Cionek was born in Curitiba, Brazil in 1986, and he started his football career in that country. Cionek received Polish citizenship in 2011 because his family had Polish roots, and decided to play for their national team. This was Cionek's first World Cup appearance.
6. Poland vs Senegal: In the 60th minute of the match, Poland made a shocking mistake that culminated in Senegal scoring their second goal. Which Senegalese striker sprinted towards the ball and kicked it into the net after a failure on the part of the Polish midfield and defense?

Answer: Mbaye Niang

The Poles made a couple of interesting efforts to try and tie the game during the second half, including a dangerous free kick attempt by Lewandowski. Unfortunately for them, their players seemed lacking in focus and committed their second major mistake with half an hour left of the game. A Senegal defender headed the ball into the midfield area, where a Polish player decided to kick the ball back to his own goalkeeper. However, their defender and goalkeeper got confused and both hesitated when going for the ball, while Senegalese Mbaye Niang ran with determination and was able to score the second goal of the match.

Mbaye Niang was born in France in 1994, and participated in several youth competitions with the French squad. The striker decided to continue his career with the Senegal main squad in 2017, which is allowed by FIFA. He played for Italian club Milan between 2012 and 2018, and since played in several other teams in Italy, France, and Saudi Arabia.
7. Poland vs Senegal: Despite a poor performance by the Polish team, a last-minute play at 86' prevented the Poles from leaving empty-handed. Which defender, who had previously made a mistake that contributed to Senegal's second goal, headed the ball to score Poland's only goal in the match?

Answer: Grzegorz Krychowiak

Grzegorz Krychowiak had a major role in Senegal's second goal, so he tried to make last-minute amends in a free kick taken four minutes before the end of the match. With almost every player in Senegal's box, Grosicki took a long-distance free kick that turned into a cross.

The ball got past every other player but Krychowiak, who headed the ball to the keeper's left side, leaving him completely stunned. Unfortunately for the Poles, time ran out before they could score another goal, losing three critical points that would help leave them out of the World Cup in the group stage.
8. The last match of June 19 featured the hosts, Russia, playing against Egypt. The first half wasn't too exciting, but the second half delivered and had several interesting moments. The match started going downhill for Egypt when Ahmed Fathy scored an own goal when trying to kick the ball away. What made this own goal even more unfortunate?

Answer: Fathy was Egypt's captain

The match between Russia and Egypt was the first one to feature two teams that had already played in the Cup. The match started out without exciting plays or shots on goal, but that changed quickly at the beginning of the second half. The Saint Petersburg Stadium erupted after a pass intended for striker Artem Dzyuba was deflected by Egyptian defender and captain Ahmet Fathy.

The ball went into a corner of the Egyptian net, making it impossible for the keeper to stop. This was the fifth own goal of the World Cup, which was already a high number at this point (this would become the World Cup with the most own goals up to that year). Fathy started his career in 2001 and has since played with several Egyptian clubs and in many international competitions representing the African nation.
9. Russia vs Egypt: In the 59th minute, Russian Denis Cheryshev placed himself in an ideal position inside the Egyptian penalty box and swiftly kicked the ball, scoring Russia's second goal of the match. How many goals had Cheryshev scored in the previous match against Saudi Arabia?

Answer: 2

Denis Cheryshev was one of the stars of the Russia 2018 inaugural match that the hosts played against Saudi Arabia. The young winger, whose club career entirely developed in Spain, had a spectacular tournament. He ended up scoring a total of four goals, the first four international goals of his career.

At the moment he scored this goal, he was tied with Cristiano Ronaldo for most goals scored, with 3. Cheryshev is the son of another successful Russian player Dmitri Cheryshev. Dmitri retired in Spain in 2003 and since started his coaching career.
10. Russia vs Egypt: Russia sealed their victory by hitting Egypt with a third goal. Artem Dzyuba scored Russia's final goal of the match after he beautifully put down a ball and kicked it successfully. Which body part did he use to control the ball before taking the shot?

Answer: Chest

Artem Dzyuba was one of Russia's most dangerous men during the match, as he was frequently in the box trying to get past the Egyptian defenders. At 62', only minutes after Russia had scored their second goal, a long free kick from the other side of the court floated to where Dzyuba was.

He easily got rid of the Egyptian defender who was covering him and bumped the ball with his chest, getting it into the box and skillfully shooting to score the goal. Ali Gabr tried to stop Dzyuba, but he was only humiliated after he failed to stop the Russian striker.

The match would end 3-1 and would ensure that Russia advanced to the knockout stage.
