Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 1970, Yankee Mel Stottlemyre pitched a shutout before being relieved with one out in the ninth inning of a game. What was strange about that game?

Answer: He walked 11 batters

It was May 21 in a game against the Washington Senators. Steve Hamilton came in for Stottlemyre in relief in the ninth, and struck out the two remaining batters. Strangely enough, in 271 innings in the season, Mel gave up only 84 walks, but 11 in this one game. The Yankees won 2-0.
2. Which of the following leagues lasted the longest?

Answer: American Association

The Federal League lasted for only two seasons in 1914 and 1915. The other two were one-season leagues. The AA began in 1882, then shut its doors in 1891. The St. Louis Browns won four of the league's pennants.
3. Which team won the first-ever National League Championship Series (NLCS)?

Answer: New York Mets

It was 1969, and fans saw Major League baseball expand to 12 teams each, and split each league into two divisions. The first NLCS was the Mets against the Braves. With Nolan Ryan and Tom Seaver as a Met, the Braves were skunked three games to none. The 1969 World Series would pit the Mets against the Orioles.

After losing game one, the Mets would win the next four straight to top off an amazing season, thus living up to the nickname, "Amazin' Mets".
4. In 1955, who was the first African-American pitcher to throw a no-hitter in Major League baseball?

Answer: Sam Jones

May 12, 1955, Jones and his Cubs threw the shutout against the Pirates. Unfortunately, Sam went 14-20 in the season. He led the league in strikeouts three times, but also four times in walks.
5. There are many baseball players who played in the NFL in addition to Major League baseball. Three of these Major Leaguers also played in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Which one of these three played only in Major League baseball?

Answer: Wally Moon

Ainge, who made his name with the Celtics, played for the Toronto Blue Jays also. DeBusschere was famous for being a New York Knick, but also played with the White Sox. Nash played with the White Sox and Twins, and was also a Los Angeles Laker in the NBA. Moon was a career Cardinal and Dodger.
6. Tony Oliva of the Twins won three batting titles in his career. What was unique about his first one?

Answer: He was a rookie

Oliva was the first player in either the American or National League to ever win a batting title as a rookie. He also hit 32 home runs and nine triples in the season. For his efforts, he took the Rookie of the Year award in 1964. His other batting crowns came in 1965 and 1971. In 1965, Tony was the runner-up MVP to teammate Zoilo Versalles.
7. Which pitching great was the first to win seven Cy Young awards?

Answer: Roger Clemens

The Cy Young award began in 1956, and all the others retired well before then. Clemens won three with the Red Sox, two with the Blue Jays, one as a Yankee, and one as an Astro. If the Cy Young award had begun in 1911 as did the MVP award, then pitchers such as Christy Mathewson, Walter Johnson, Dazzy Vance, and Warren Spahn amongst others, would have won multiple awards.
8. Who was the first manager to have the helm of five different teams in the same league?

Answer: Jimmy Dykes

The others never managed a MLB team. Dykes managed the White Sox for 13 seasons, then replaced Connie Mack with the Athletics in 1951. With a one-season job with the new Orioles in Baltimore in 1954, he then managed the Tigers and Indians for two seasons. He also managed the Reds of the National League. In 22 seasons, Dykes never finished better than third place. He retired in 1961.
9. In which year was the first extra-inning all-star game, which was also the first one televised nationally?

Answer: 1950

The 1950 game went 14 innings, and Red Schoendienst of the Cardinals was the hero. His 14th inning home run did it for the National League, 4-3. Red was selected to 10 all-star games, and this home run would be his only one in an all-star game.
10. The first player in history to hit pinch-hit home runs in consecutive games was Ray Caldwell in 1915. What was unique about this?

Answer: Caldwell was a pitcher

The New York Yankee pitcher went 19-16 in 1915. He played for 12 seasons and hit eight home runs in his career, four of which came in 1915. Ray had a .248 career batting average. Caldwell played with the great Babe Ruth on the 1919 Red Sox, the only season they would be teammates.
