Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the first pitcher in history to give up 500 home runs in their career?

Answer: Robin Roberts

Roberts played most of his 19-season career with the Phillies. He gave up 505 home runs. Ryan, who spent 27 seasons in the Majors only gave up 321 in his career. Young, who pitched when home runs were not a commodity, let 138 go over in 22 seasons. Blyleven, who set a record for allowing 50 in a season in 1986, allowed 430 in his 22 seasons.
2. Since official records began in 1920, which pitcher set a record for dishing up 27 wild pitches in a season in 1966?

Answer: Tony Cloninger

Tony spent most of his 12-season career with the Braves. Cloninger went 14-11 in 1966 with Atlanta, after coming off a 24-11 season prior. He also gave up a career high 29 home runs in the '66 season. 1966 was not a total loss for Tony, as he hit five home runs in the season, including two grand slams.
3. Which of the following Major League skippers, managed for 26 seasons and didn't have the decency to make it up for even one World Series?

Answer: Gene Mauch

Mauch managed from 1960-1987 with four different teams. They were the Phillies, Expos, Minnesota, and the California Angels. The Angels won a division title twice for him, but that was it. Gene won 1902 games as a manager, but also lost 2037 in the process. Mauch's playing career wasn't any better, playing for nine seasons, and never being in the top ten for anything.
4. In 100 years of the American League, which pitcher had the worst win-loss record in a season?

Answer: Don Larsen

Craig went 5-22 in 1963 with the Mets, but this wasn't his only 20-game losing season. Niekro also lost 20 games in a season twice. Maroth went 9-21 with the dismal Tigers in 2003. Two seasons before becoming the first pitcher to throw a perfect game in a World Series, Larsen went a pathetic 3-21 with the Baltimore Orioles in 1954.

After the season, Larsen and pitcher Bob Turley were part of a trade that sent them to the Yankees. As Yankees, both Larsen and Turley shined.
5. In the 1923 World Series featuring the Yankess and Giants, who hit two game-winning home runs in the series?

Answer: Casey Stengel

Casey's shot in game one was the decider as the Giants defeated the Yankees, 5-4. Again in game three, it was Casey's home run and the only run of the game, defeating the Yankees 1-0. It was all for nought as the Yankees beat the Giants for the crown, four games to two. Ruth had three home runs in the series and batted .368 with seven hits.
6. Which of the following pitchers set a record for starting 16 opening-day season games?

Answer: Tom Seaver

Tom Terrific appeared in 14 as a National Leaguer with the Mets and Reds, then two with the White Sox in the American League. Seaver played for 20 seasons and retired in 1986. He was a 1992 Hall of Fame inductee.
7. In 1897, which catcher set a National League record for throwing out eight would-be base stealers in a game?

Answer: Duke Farrell

Farrell split his 1896 season with the Giants and Senators. He limbered his arm by throwing out eight with Washington the following season on May 11, and he was still a back-up catcher to Deacon McGwire. Duke played for 18 seasons and retired in 1905.
8. Who was the first American Leaguer to win a batting title as a rookie?

Answer: Tony Oliva

1964 was the year and the Twins were the team. Oliva batted .323 to win the batting title by .006 over Baltimore's Brooks Robinson. He was the rookie winner over Wally Bunker of the Orioles by a landslide.
9. A career feat in itself, which 1934 all-star game pitcher struck out consecutively in order, Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Jimmie Foxx, Al Simmons, and Joe Cronin?

Answer: Carl Hubbell

Hubbell was a career 16-season New York Giant. After winning the National League MVP in 1933, Carl wasn't done strutting his stuff. The American League however, won the game with their nine runs. He also won the MVP in 1936. Hubbell retired in 1943, and was inducted into the hall only four years later.
10. Rickey Henderson was known for keeping his suitcase packed with all the moves that he made throughout his baseball career. Which of the following teams did Rickey never play for?

Answer: Detroit Tigers

Beginning with his first season in 1979 with Oakland, Henderson made a total of 13 moves in his 25-season career. He retired in 2003 as a Dodger at age 44. He left with the most stolen bases in history with 1406, amongst many other running records.
