Hawthorn FC was formed on 28th February 1873 following a meeting in the Hawthorne Hotel. It was disbanded in 1883, reformed in 1893, disdbanded again in 1898, and then reformed in 1902.

His greatest ever moment came during the 1989 Grand Final against Geelong. Brereton was felled behind play in the first few seconds of the game.

In great pain and suffering a severely cracked rib, Brereton refused to leave and the field, moved to the forward line taking an over head mark and kicking Hawthorn's first goal. Legend has it that Allan Jeans, Hawthorn's Coach, told the runner to tell Brereton one word. 'INSPIRATIONAL'
