Hawthorn FC was formed on 28th February 1873 following a meeting in the Hawthorne Hotel. It was disbanded in 1883, reformed in 1893, disdbanded again in 1898, and then reformed in 1902.

Following an 'in-camera' meeting of VFL delegates on January 9th, 1925, it was agreed that Hawthorn would be admitted to the VFL. The announcement was made by VFL President, Sir Baldwin Spencer, on January 16th, 1925. Shane Crawford is an important member of the Hawthorn Football Club. He was captain in 2001 and wore the number 9 jersey. Crawford started at Hawthorn in 1993 however 1999 was his best year winning many awards, including the 'Brownlow Medal'. He also played an integral part in Hawthorn's victory in the final of the Ansett Australia Cup in 1999.
He was captain until the end of the 2004 season (he retired at the end of 2008).

Leigh Matthews was arguably the greatest player who ever played the game. An inspirational leader, 'Barney' or 'Lethal' as he was affectionately known was instrumental in Hawthorn's success during the late 70's and 80's. He began his career as a rover and was respeceted for his agreessiveness and skill at the football. Later in his career, he moved to the foward line with great success kicking 915 goals in a great career.

Dermott 'The Kid' Brereton was named only once in the All Australian team, in 1985. A champion Centre Half Foward, Brereton entertained crowds with his long kicking and hardness at the football. His greatest ever moment came during the 1989 Grand Final against Geelong. Brereton was felled behind play in the first few seconds of the game.

In great pain and suffering a severely cracked rib, Brereton refused to leave and the field, moved to the forward line taking an over head mark and kicking Hawthorn's first goal. Legend has it that Allan Jeans, Hawthorn's Coach, told the runner to tell Brereton one word. 'INSPIRATIONAL'

In the 1988 VFL Grand Final against Melbourne, Hawthorn backman Gary Ayres suffered a fracture of the cheekbone in the first quarter. Ayres refused to leave the field and went on to play a fantastic game which earned him a second Norm Smith Medal and become the first player in history to do so.
The previous record was 83 pts in 1983, when Hawthorn beat Essendon 140-57.

AFL Park, Waverley was the home of the Hawks home between 1990 and 1999. Previously, Hawthorn shared Princes Park with Carlton between 1973 and 1989. The Hawks won the only Grand Final ever played at Waverley, in 1991. They won a preliminary final there in 1987 when Gary Buckenara kicked a goal after the siren. And they won the last game played there, in round 22 of season 1999.
