Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Alex Rodriguez began his career with the Seattle Mariners in 1994. He signed with the Texas Rangers in 2001 and played with them until 2003. With both teams, he wore the number 3 on his back. In 2004 when becoming a Yankee, which jersey number did he choose?

Answer: 13

A-Rod hit stardom in 1996 with Seattle when he became an All-Star, and was the runner-up for the AL MVP to Juan Gonzalez of the Rangers. He was third in the MVP voting in 2000, then was runner-up again in 2002, this time to Miguel Tejada of Oakland. He finally won the AL MVP in 2003, then again in 2005 and 2007. In 2007, Alex surpassed the 500 home run mark in only 14 seasons.
2. Pitcher Johan Santana won the AL Cy Young Award in 2004 and 2006 with the Twins. He also pitched a Triple Crown in 2006. He became a New York Met in 2008. Which jersey number did he wear with both teams?

Answer: 57

Santana played with the Twins from 2000-2007. 2008 saw him in the familiar 57, but with the Mets this time. He went 16-7 with 206 strikeouts with the Mets, but the team finished second in the NL East behind the Phillies.
3. Hall of Fame great Mickey Mantle played his entire 18-season career with the Yankees. Which number did he grace in the pinstripes?

Answer: 7

The number 4 of Lou Gehrig had been retired since the early days of the Yankees, as was the number 3 of the great Babe Ruth. A few Yankee players wore the number 9, but it was Roger Maris who made fans take a look. Mantle went to 12 World Series with the Yankees. He won three MVPs including batting for a Triple Crown in 1956. He was inducted into the hall in 1974.
4. Ryne Sandberg played 16 seasons with the Cubs, and all but 13 games in a Chicago uniform. Which number did he wear?

Answer: 23

From 1982-1997, Ryne primarily played second base for the Cubs. His 13 games were with the Phillies in 1981. Sandberg was the 1984 NL MVP, and led the league in home runs in 1990. Because of his duties with the Cubs, Ryne never saw a World Series game. The Hall of Fame inducted him in 2005.
5. Slugger Mark McGwire played ball from 1986-2001 with the Athletics and Cardinals. With both teams, he wore the same number of what?

Answer: 25

Mark won the AL Rookie of the Year Award with Oakland, and set a record for hitting 49 home runs as a rookie. He won another AL home run crown in 1996. Midseason 1997 saw McGwire involved in a trade that made him a St. Louis Cardinal. Although hitting 58 home runs in the season, he didn't win a league home run title.

He hit 34 with the Athletics, then 24 as a Cardinal. Mark hit 70 home runs in 1998, breaking the season record of Roger Maris who hit 61 in 1961.
6. In eight seasons, Manny Ramirez wore the number 24 in the Boston Red Sox outfield. He went to the Dodgers in 2008 and wore which number?

Answer: 99

"Man-Ram" made an immediate impact with the Dodgers in 2008 that helped them to the postseason. In 53 games with the Dodgers, he had 74 hits with 17 home runs, 14 doubles, 43 singles, and 53 RBIs.
7. Phillies pitcher Jamie Moyer was the oldest active player in the 2008 season at the age of 45. What number did centerfielder Shane Victorino see on Moyer's back?

Answer: 50

Moyer was in his 22nd season, and his second with the Phillies after being traded by the Mariners in midseason 2006. Jamie threw a very respectable 16-7 season in 2008.
8. Joe Torre managed the Yankees for 12 seasons while taking them to six World Series appearances. When he took the helm of the Dodgers, he chose to keep the number 6 on his back. Which Dodger wore this number 6 in the 1960s?

Answer: Ron Fairly

Fairly was an outfielder/first baseman for the Dodgers from 1958-1969. The familiar red-haired number 6 was a consistent Dodger, and helped them to four World Series while winning three. He hit two home runs in the 1965 series, and 215 in his career. Roseboro was the Dodger catcher and wore the number 8. Willie played centerfield in the number 3, and Tommy, a two-time batting champion wore number 12.

They were not related.
9. Boston's Dustin Pedroia won the American League Rookie of the Year award in 2007. He did this while wearing which number on his back?

Answer: 15

The second baseman won the rookie award over Delmon Young of Tampa Bay. After batting .317 with eight home runs to take the award, his numbers in 2008 increased to batting .326 with 17 home runs.
10. Barry Bonds won two NL MVP awards with the Pittsburgh Pirates. After donning the number 25 with San Francisco, he won another five MVPs. Which number did he wear as a Pirate?

Answer: 24

Bonds played for the Pirates from 1986-1992 before spending 15 seasons in San Francisco. Barry's godfather was Giant Willie Mays, who wore the number 24 throughout his career. When Bonds arrived in San Francisco, he found the number 24 already retired. Barry set a season home run record by hitting 73 in 2001.
