Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What are the five categories of diving?

Answer: Front, Back, Inward, Reverse, and Twister

"Flying" is a difficult type of dive that IS NOT a dive category. Flying dives fall into place with the corresponding category (i.e. a Forward Flying one S.S. is counted as a FORWARD dive and NOT a flying dive).
2. Mary did a dive. She was doing dive 5121 A. She did a front dive with one somersault and a half twist in the pike position. Should this dive be counted as a failed dive?

Answer: Yes

Dive 5121 A is a front dive with one somersault and a half twist in the straight position. Mary did her dive in the wrong position. For those of you wondering, this is how the dive number is calculated:
1. Each dive category is assigned a number as follows: Forward=1 Back=2 Reverse=3 Inward=4 and Twister=5. 2. All of the dives are three digit numbers (except for twister which has four digits)
3. The last number in a three digit dive stands for the amount of S.S. as follows: 1=none, 2=one S.S., 3=one and ½ S.S. etc.
4. The 2nd # in a five digit dive stands for the corresponding category (see 1.). 5. The 3rd # in a five digit dive stands for the amount of S.S. you do (see 3.). 6. The final # in a five digit dive stands for the amount of twists you complete as follows: 1=a ½ twist, 2=1 twist, 3=1 and ½ twists, etc. 7. Finally, the attached letter stands for the position that you are in as follows: A=straight, B=Pike, C=Tuck, D=Free Position.
3. How many dives does each regular diver do in a dual meet?

Answer: 6

You can do 11 dives at an invitational meet, sections meet, or state meet. You can do 3 dives at a duel meet if you are diving exibition.
4. What happens if you stop on the diving board during your dive and then walk back to the beginning of the board and start your dive again?

Answer: It is counted as a balk and you receive 2.0 points off of every judges score

If you balk during the dive, but continue with it (meaning you complete the dive) it is counted as "failed".
5. What is the D.D. for a front dive 1/2 twist?

Answer: 1.8

6. Mary was supposed to do dive 201 C. She did a back dive in the tuck position. Is this the correct dive?

Answer: Yes

7. What dive has the highest D.D. and what is the D.D.?

Answer: Inward 2 ½ S.S. in the pike pos.; 3.4

An inward 2 and a half somersaults.
8. A front dive tuck is the simplest dive that there is. What is its D.D.?

Answer: 1.2

Most beginning divers learn this dive first.
9. Which forward dive has the highest D.D.?

Answer: 107 B

Three and a half somersaults in the pike position is pretty hard to pull off. There are no dives #108 B or 107 D, and 107 C is a three and a half S.S. in the TUCK position. Tuck dives are always a lower D.D. than Pike dives.
10. Mary did a dive with a D.D. of 1.8 at a 5 judge meet. Her scores were as follows: 5, 5.5, 6, 6, and 4.5. What was her total score for this dive?

Answer: 29.7 points

To calculate a 5-judge dive score you first add up all of the scores (except for the highest and lowest scores), then you multiply your total by the D.D. (in this case, 1.8).
Hope you had fun!
