Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the Royals' opening day starter?

Answer: Gil Meche

Gil Meche, the offseason acquisition, started the April 2, 2007 afternoon game for the Royals. He and the Royals defeated the Boston Red Sox and Curt Schilling 7-1.
2. Who was the Royals' starting third baseman?

Answer: Alex Gordon

Alex Gordon, dubbed by many as "the next George Brett", was a top prospect. He drew a standing ovation before his first Major League at-bat, in which he struck out with the bases loaded against Curt Schilling. There was so much hype surrounding Gordon that the Royals moved their 2006 third baseman and Player of the Year, Mark Teahen, to a different position.
3. Who was the Royals' starting second baseman, an experienced veteran?

Answer: Mark Grudzielanek

Mark Grudzielanek had the Royals' second base job regularly for the second year. He has played for several teams, mostly in the National League, and obtained his 2000th career hit in the 2008 season.
4. What position was Mark Teahen moved to?

Answer: Right field

When Mark Teahen was moved to make room for Alex Gordon, the Royals had him primarily play right field, although he has also spent time at first base, centerfield, and left field.
5. What is Esteban German's best defensive position?

Answer: Second base

Esteban German is not a "real" anything, but at least he played an adequate second base. Sometimes he played there when Grudzielanek had to take a day off to rest, but he also played in the rest of the infield and in the outfield.
6. Who usually closed out games while Octavio Dotel was either hurt or not with the team anymore?

Answer: Joakim Soria

Octavio Dotel was the Royals' closer, but when he went down with an injury, Joakim Soria stepped up to take his place. After Dotel was traded to the Braves, Soria took over for good.
7. Where was David DeJesus playing?

Answer: Centerfield

David DeJesus played some left field in 2006, but he spent the 2007 season manning center.
8. What position had Billy Butler been playing when he was called up from the minors?

Answer: Left field

The Royals had been trying Butler in left field for a while. When he came to the Majors, they decided he didn't have enough speed and made him a first baseman/DH.
9. Who was the starting catcher?

Answer: John Buck

John Buck started in front of Jason LaRue and led the team with 18 home runs.
10. Who entered the season as the fourth starting pitcher?

Answer: Jorge de la Rosa

Jorge de la Rosa began the season with a victory against Detroit, but went on to tie for the team lead in losses.
