The North Sydney Bears, also called the Shoremen, left the NRL in 1999; they had competed in the NRL for 92 seasons. They merged after the 1999 season with the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles to form the Northern Eagles. The merger lasted for three seasons, before splitting up. North Sydney then played in the second NSWRL competiton.

The Tigers were one of the eight charter members of the AL in 1901. They did not win their first World Series title until 1935, when they beat the Chicago Cubs in six games. In 1912, the Tigers moved to Navin Field and, after renovations in 1938, the stadium was renamed Briggs Stadium.

In 1961 the stadium was renamed Tiger Stadium, the name most synonymous with the park. After the 1999 season, the team moved to Comerica Park.
