Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Balmain Tigers were a foundation club of the New South Wales Rugby League in 1908. They merged with another club at the end of the 1999 season to form the Wests Tigers joint venture. When was the last year the Balmain Tigers won the NSWRL premiership?

Answer: 1969

The score was 11-2 vs. South Sydney and the only try was scored by Sid Williams. The Tigers 'alledgedly' employed a controversial tactic of 'laying down' and therefore wasting time. Who cares? It is in the history books that the Tigers won and that's all that counts.
TIGER TIP - the night vision of tigers is six times that of humans.
2. The U.S. team the Cincinnati Bengals are a team in the National Football League. Who was their head coach for three season from 2000 to 2002?

Answer: Dick LeBeau

LeBeau was the eighth coach of the Bengals. Even though they had good statistics in many areas they ended the 2002 season with only 2 wins from 26 games which was the poorest in franchise history.
TIGER TIP - a tiger's claws are retractable and they scratch on tree trucks to mark their territoy.
3. The Richmond Tigers are a team in the Australian Football League. Who was their captain for the four seaosns from 2001 to 2004?

Answer: Wayne Campbell

The Tigers won back-to-back titles twice, in 1920-21 and 1973-74.
TIGER TIP - a tiger's stripes are like fingerprints, no two tigers have the same prints.
4. Which Australian city had a Tiger team in the NBL competition, the National Basketball League?

Answer: Melbourne

Andrew Gaze was one of the Melbourne Tiger's most widely recognized players. He led the Australian Olypmic Team at the opening ceremony of the 2000 Olympics. TIGER TIP - the lifespan of a tiger is thought to be about ten years in the wild but tigers living in captivity live up to twice that length of time.
The Melbourne Tigers became Melbourne United in 2014.
5. Which Californian university has a women's basketball team called the Tigers?

Answer: University of the Pacific

From the website of the Pacific Tigers: "Take an experienced and talented core of returning players who just missed in 2001-02, add a dash of excitement and energy from four newcomers, then allow a new coaching staff to mix things up, and the Pacific Tigers women's basketball team may have a championship recipe ready in 2002-03." TIGER TIP - tigers are born blind and weigh only about one kilogram.
6. The Leicester Tigers, of England, are a force in which sport?

Answer: Rugby Union

The Leicester Tigers were the premiers in the 2001-02 Zurich Premiership competition. Josh Kronfeld, who signed with them for one year (2003-04 season) and was named captain, is an ex-All Black flanker and is the first overseas captain for the club since Colin Martin, another All Black (New Zealnd international), captained the team from 1960-63. TIGER TIP - tigers beginning their own kills at about 18 months of age.
7. National Rugby League (Australia): at the end of the 1999 season the Balmain Tigers merged with another Rugby League team, and first started playing as a joint venture in the 2000 competition. With which team did they merge?

Answer: Western Suburbs Magpies

The merged team is called the Wests Tigers, understandably they didn't take the Magpie as the team mascot. The first coach was Wayne Pearce - a fantastic player from the 80s and 90s with Balmain but he didn't succeed so well as a coach and lasted just one season. TIGER TIP - all tigers have round pupils and yellow irises except for the blue eyes of the white tigers.
8. Where did the Cincinnati Bengal's play their home games in the 2002 season?

Answer: Paul Brown Stadium

For the most useless bit of information you'll get today - the Paul Brown stadium had over 1200 individual doors in it and over 1,438,000 square feet of drywall. Leichhardt Oval was the home ground of the Balmain Tigers, and became one of the home grounds for the Wests Tigers joint venture (the other being Wests' home ground). TIGER TIP - Siberian tigers are the heaviest subspecies at 225kg or more.
9. Australian Rules: which of these players was the last player to win the Brownlow Medal from the Richmond Tigers?

Answer: Ian Stewart in 1971

The Brownlow Medal is awarded to the best and fairest player in the AFL over the whole season. If a player has been suspended he is ineligible to win it. Simon Black from the Brisbane Lions won the medal in 2002. TIGER TIP - the Sumatran tiger has the most stripes of any of the tiger subspecies and the Siberian tiger has the least.
10. Rugby League: in their Team of the Century announced by the Balmain Tigers in 2003, who was named fullback and captain of the century?

Answer: Keith Barnes

A deserved winner of this title, Keith Barnes was nicknamed "Golden Boots" for his goal kicking talent. TIGER TIP - the tiger's head can often carry the Chinese mark of wang (or King) on their forehead.
