The 39-year-old Clemens collects his 20th win hurling the Yankees to a 6-3 win over the White Sox on September 19. He finished the season with a 20-3 record and wins his 6th Cy Young Award of his career. Clemens became the first pitcher in history to win 20 or more games in a season without pitching a complete game in 2001. During the season, he passed Walter Johnson for the all-time strikeout leader in the American League.

On August 6, 2001, Boston Red Sox catcher Scott Hatteberg performs the ultimate baseball opposite in consecutive at bats. With two men on in the 4th inning and the Sox ahead 4-2, he lines into a triple play. Two innings later, after the Rangers score five to go ahead, he hits a grand slam to put Boston in the lead to stay.

The Red Sox defeat the Rangers, 10-7. "That's going from the outhouse to the penthouse right there," said Hatteberg after the game.

Greg Maddux of the Atlanta Braves had his NL record streak end at 72-and-one-third innings on August 12th during a 9-1 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks. Maddux intentionally walks Steve Finley in the 3rd inning to end the streak. Christy Mathewson of New York (1913), and Randy Jones of San Diego (1976) previously held the National League record with 68 innings.

On September 25, 2001, Burnitz and Sexson each homered three times as the Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks, 9-4. Twice they hit back-to-back home runs. Burnitz hit his homers in the 2nd, 4th, and 6th innings. He finished the 2001 season with 34 dingers. Sexson hit his homers in the 4th, 6th, and 9th innings. He finished the season with 45 home runs.

The previous record was held by "Shoeless" Joe Jackson in 1911. Ichiros' 192 singles in 2001 set a new AL record, once owned by Wade Boggs with 187 singles in 1985.
