Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following sluggers never hit for a Triple Crown?

Answer: Steve Garvey

Hornsby hit a batting Triple Crown twice in the 1920s. Williams had two Triple Crowns in the 1940s. Mantle hit one with the Yankees in 1956. Garvey never led the league in any of the three categories.
2. Reggie Jackson hit three home runs in one game during the 1977 World Series against the Dodgers. Which game did he hit them in?

Answer: 6

Game six in 1977 saw Jackson earn his nickname of 'Mr. October'. The Yankees won the series four games to two. Jackson hit 18 postseason home runs throughout his career.
3. Which of the following was not a pitcher during his Major League career?

Answer: Billy Williams

Williams played 16 of his 18 seasons with the Cubs of Chicago, and most of them with Hall of Fame great Ernie Banks. With his nickname, "Sweet Swingin' Billy from Whistler", Williams hit 426 home runs of his own. He was also a 1987 Hall of Fame inductee.
4. For 10 years, Biz Mackey took which future Hall of Fame player at the age of 15 under his wing, and trained him to be a professional baseball player?

Answer: Roy Campanella

Mackey was the manager of the Baltimore Elite Giants of the Negro League. Josh Gibson also aided Mackey with Campanella, and turned him into a catcher. Campanella once stated that Mackey was the hardest man that he ever dealt with. Roy was a three-time MVP in 1951, 1953, and 1955. An auto accident ended his career. The hall took him in 1969, then the Lord in 1993.
5. Which player who retired in the 1980s, did so with the worst stolen base percentage (minimum 100 attempts) in history?

Answer: Buddy Bell

Bell played for 18 seasons, mostly with the Indians and Rangers, and retired in 1988. In 134 attempts, Buddy was caught 79 times. His season high in thefts was seven in 1973, but was caught more times than he was successful.
6. The statistics of a sacrfice fly began in which year?

Answer: 1954

Gil Hodges of the Brooklyn Dodgers hit 19 in the first season that this record was kept in 1954. And a record it was, as his 19 stood on top throughout the rest of the century.
7. New York Yankee great Joe Pepitione was talked about in a book. Which book was quoted, "If it weren't for Joe Pepitone, my baseball career probably would have been shorter by many weeks. He kept taking the pressure off me. Every time I got into trouble, there was Peppy, getting into worse trouble"?

Answer: Jim Bouton, "I'm Glad You Didn't Take it Personally"

Pepitone played for eight seasons with the pitcher Bouton, seven with the Yankees and one with the Astros. The three-time Gold Glove first baseman was known more for his off-field antics and sexual endeavors than his on-field career. He appeared in two World Series, coming up empty-handed in both. Joe retired in 1973.
8. Which of the following sluggers hit more home runs on the road than in his own ballpark in his career, a very unusual occurrence?

Answer: Joe Adcock

Adcock played for 17 seasons, mostly with the Braves. Joe hit 336 home runs throughout his career. He hit 199 on the road, but only 137 in his own home park. Four of those home runs came in one game on July 31, 1954, as a Milwaukee Brave first baseman.
9. Which Ty Cobb teammate constantly had bitter feuds with him both on and off the field, and often found both players in centerfield during a game going at it?

Answer: Sam Crawford

Cobb joined the Tigers two years after Crawford was already in the Tiger outfield. Sam didn't like Cobb's limelight attitude or his dirty-play tactics, and the feud began. On many occasions, manager Hughie Jennings had to move Cobb to right field from center, to get him away from Crawford in left field.

They had an on-going feud between the two until 1917 when Crawford retired. Crawford was a Hall of Fame inductee in 1957, while Cobb was inducted in 1936.
10. When Joe DiMaggio joined the Yankees in 1936, he was a quiet and shy individual. Who did manager Joe McCarthy select as a roommate for DiMaggio to help bring him out of his shell?

Answer: Lefty Gomez

Gomez was a Yankee pitcher beginning his seventh season in the pinstripes. Lefty had just the opposite personality compared to Joe, as he was gregarious and hyperactive. This helped DiMaggio to just play ball. Both players would benefit from each other.
