1. 1922: Were United relegated this year?

Answer: Yes

United finished the season bottom of the first division, 8 points away from safety. Bradford City were also relegated (for the first time in their history, haviong won promotion to Division 1 in 1908), while Liverpool became champions, for the 3rd time.

2. 1923: What position did United finish this year?

Answer: 4th

In their first season in division two after being relegated, United finished 4th, three points away from promotion. Notts County and West Ham United were the two that went up into division one. This was West Ham's first appearance in Division 1. They joined the Second Division of the Football League in 1919.

3. 1924: Which United player died in a traffic accident this year?

Answer: Charlie Radford

Charlie Radford was signed on a free transfer from Walsall in 1920, and in his time at United he played 96 games and scored 1 goal.

4. 1925: United were promoted from the Second Division this year in second place. Who were the champions?

After 3 years in the second division, United finally returned to top flight football finishing second, 2 points behind Leicester, who had scored an incredible 90 goals in the league season.

The game took place on 10th April, 1926 at Ewood Park. In the game at Old Trafford however, United ran out 2-0 winners, and would go on to finish 9th for the season. United lost 0-7 again 4 years later, at Villa Park on 27th December 1930.

The first game was played at Reading's ground, Elm Park, and saw a 1-1 draw. Four days later, the two met at Old Trafford and a 2-2 draw was the result. Finally, in the last replay, Reading won the game 2-1 at Aston Villa's ground, Villa Park.

United entered the competition in the 3rd round and beat Brentford 7-1 at Old Trafford. In the next round, Bury entertained United at Gigg Lane, with a 1-1 draw, and United then won the replay 1-0. Round 5 saw Birmingham City beaten 1-0 at Old Trafford, but Blackburn Rovers were too good at Ewood Park in the quarter final, and won the game 2-0.

8. 1929: Which two players were signed from Witton Albion this year?

Answer: Jack Mellor & Stanley Gallimore

Defender Mellor played 122 times for United with no goals to his record, while striker Gallimore scored 20 goals in 75 games.

9. 1930: United finished 2 points away from relegation this year, winning 15 games. How many did they lose?

Answer: 19

There were also 8 draws. 67 goals were scored and 88 conceded with United finishing in 17th place with 38 points.

10. 1931: United were relegated again from the first division this year. How many games did they win in the league?

Answer: 7

United finished bottom of the league, with only 7 wins from 42 games. Also relegated were Leeds United, and Arsenal were champions.
