Recovering from a shoulder injury, junior sensation Darius Watts missed Marshall's season opener against Appalachian St. Although, the Herd didn't really need him as sophomore receiver Josh Davis caught 2 touchdowns while senior Demetrius Doss caught his first career one.

Sophomore back-up Stan Hill started for Marshall against Miami of Ohio. Starter Byron Leftwich missed the game after suffering a blow in his left shin against Akron a few weeks earlier. The Herd rallied around Hill who totaled for 5 Marshall TDs in the win.

Miami of Ohio's defensive coordinator JoMin Wauford was arrested after his team loss to Marshall 36-34. After the game, fans rushed the field to celebrate when Wauford struck a Marshall fan, knocking him unconscious on the turf. I was there to see it all and am very upset that this game will be remembered because of the incident and not Stan Hill's comeback performance. Hodge and Bowen are members of the Miami secondary and Roethlisberger is their quarterback.
