Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Masters Tournament was first held on March 22, 1934 but wasn't called The Masters until which year?

Answer: 1939

It was originally called The Augusta National Invitational Tournament. In 1940 the tournament became an annual event however the Masters was cancelled from 1943 through 1945 due to WWII.
2. Amateur golfer Bobby Jones founded Augusta and assisted the course architect with the design of the course. He also co-founded the Masters Tournament. He retired in 1930, began work on Augusta in 1931 and it opened for play in 1933. How old was he when he retired from competitive golf?

Answer: 28

He retired at 28 after winning the Grand Slam of golf. Before The Masters was founded, the national amateur championships of the US and the UK were considered majors along with the U.S. Open & the British Open. Now it has been changed to mean winning all four "majors" (The Masters, The Open, usually called the British Open, The U.S. Open and the PGA Championship) in the same year. Bobby Jones, who always played as an amateur, was the only player to win that version of the Grand Slam.
3. The Masters Tournament is always played over four days, Thursday through Sunday, at the same time every year. On what day does it start?

Answer: First full week in April

The Masters is the first in date order of the four majors. It is always played during the first full week of April. It is always played at the same course, Augusta National Golf Club. It always runs from Thursday through Sunday unless weather delays play at some point.
4. In addition to a generous cash prize and a gold medal the winner of The Masters is awarded the famous green jacket. Who presents the green jacket to the winner?

Answer: Previous year's winner

The winner from the previous year puts the jacket on the new winner unless the golfer had won the year before. The chairman of Augusta National provided help with putting on the jacket on two different occasions when Nick Faldo and Tiger Woods won in consecutive years.

When Jack Nicklaus became the first player to win in consecutive years he put the jacket on himself with no help from anyone. The caddy's job is over once the tournament is concluded. The ladies (LPGA) have their own tournaments.
5. The green jacket means that the golfer has won the tournament but what else does it signify?

Answer: Player is an honorary club member

The green jacket is required attire when at Augusta. Winner gets to have the jacket for one year and it must be returned after that to be worn any time they are at Augusta. Player may already be or will be a millionaire but that has nothing to do with the jacket. Player may or may not be a great person, that is entirely subjective. Winners are automatically invited the next year and are also invited to the three other majors.
6. The land where Augusta National Golf Club course was built had originally been a horticultural nursery so every hole is associated with a tree or shrub. The name of the 18th hole is also associated with which plant popular during the holiday season at year end?

Answer: Holly

The 18th is associated with Holly which is widely used at Christmas for decoration. The Redbud tree is associated with the 16th hole and is one of the first blooms to appear in the early spring. The Azalea bush is associated with the 13th hole. Azalea are predominant throughout the south during the spring season.

The 11th hole bears the name of the White Dogwood tree. There is also a Pink Dogwood tree and it is associated with the 2nd hole. These are both flowering trees that are early spring bloomers and are very common throughout the south.
7. The Masters at Augusta is an Invitational tournament and there are 18 invitation categories. The first category is extended to all previous winners of the Masters. The next three categories cover invitations that are extended to previous winners of the other three "Majors". All but one of these lasts for five years after their win and then expires. Which one lasts for their lifetime?

Answer: Previous Masters champions

All previous winners of the Masters are invited for their lifetime after winning. Starting in 2002 previous winners of advanced age were discouraged from participating, however they could be designated as honorary starters. All winners of the Masters were also automatically invited to the other three majors and remained on the invite list for a full five years.
8. Another invitational category for eligibility for the Masters includes how many of the top finishers from the previous years' Masters?

Answer: 12

The top 12 finishers from the previous year are automatically qualified to be invited for the following years' tournament. This could actually result in many more than 12 golfers since it also included ties.
9. When The Masters was won in 1997 by a 21 year old he made history by becoming the youngest player to win the tournament. Impressively the Masters was his first win of a major. Can you spot his stripes?

Answer: Tiger Woods

Tiger Woods was not only the youngest to win, he was also the first African American golfer to win the Masters. Phil Mickelson was 33 when he won his first Masters in 2004. Fred Couples was 32 when he won in 1992. Jose Maria Olazabal was 28 when he won his first Masters in 1994.
10. This golfer was 46 years and 82 days old when he won the Masters in 1986, making him the oldest player to have won the tournament. Who was he?

Answer: Jack Nicklaus

Jack Nicklaus, born on January 21, 1940, was 46 years and 82 days when he won his 6th and last Masters in 1986. Gary Player was 42 when he won his 3rd Masters in 1978.
