Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. XXXV: 2001
Answer: Baltimore Ravens
The 12-4 Ravens bested the 12-4 Giants in their first-ever Super Bowl appearance. At one point in the season, the Ravens had lost three consecutive games.
The Ravens had technically only existed for five years. The team had been in Cleveland as the Browns before that. When they moved to Baltimore in 1996, they worked out an agreement to leave the Browns franchise name and records in Cleveland for a new expansion team (the Browns were re-established three seasons later in 1999).
2. XXXVI: 2002
Answer: New England Patriots
The St. Louis Rams scored 14 fourth quarter points to stage an attempted comeback, but fell 20-17 to the Tom Brady-led Patriots. Brady was named the game's MVP. The Rams had future Hall of Fame players Isaac Bruce, Marshall Faulk, Orlando Pace, Kurt Warner and Aeneas Williams on the roster, while the Patriots had Brady, Ty Law and Richard Seymour.
3. XXXVII: 2003
Answer: Tampa Bay Buccaneers
The Buccaneers absolutely trounced the Oakland Raiders 48-21. Tampa Bay was coached by Jon Gruden, who had been the Raiders coach until the year before. After the first quarter the game was tied 3-3, but Tampa Bay scored in double digits in each of the final three quarters, outscoring the Raiders in each quarter as well. Safety Dexter Jackson was the game's MVP.
4. XXXVIII: 2004
Answer: New England Patriots
Tom Brady and the Patriots won their second Super Bowl in three years with a 32-29 victory over the Carolina Panthers. All of the game's scoring happened in the second and fourth quarters. This game is more remembered for the halftime show that saw Janet Jackson have a "wardrobe malfunction" exposing her pasty-covered nipple. Jackson swore for years that it was simply her top ripping off, but never explained why she was wearing the nipple cover.
5. XXXIX: 2005
Answer: New England Patriots
For the third time in four years, the Patriots won the Super Bowl. This time they beat the Philadelphia Eagles 24-21. All three of their victories were by three points or less. Unlike the previous two Super Bowl victories, Tom Brady wasn't the MVP. Wide Receiver Deion Branch won the award.
6. XL: 2006
Answer: Pittsburgh Steelers
While not playing in the game, Tom Brady performed the coin toss. The Steelers beat the Seattle Seahawks 21-10 in the game. Hines Ward, a wide receiver, was the game's MVP. He caught a 43-yard pass from fellow receiver Antwaan Randle-El, the first time in Super Bowl history a wide receiver had thrown a touchdown pass.
7. XLI: 2007
Answer: Indianapolis Colts
Legendary quarterback Peyton Manning finally won his first Super Bowl with a 29-17 victory over the Chicago Bears. He won the MVP award for this efforts. Indianapolis kicker Adam Vinatieri (in his fourth Super Bowl, having played for the Patriots prior) scored three field goals. Chicago's Lovie Smith and the Indianapolis' Tony Dungy both became the first African-American head coaches to coach in the Super Bowl.
8. XLII: 2008
Answer: New York Giants
The unbeaten New England Patriots fell to the Giants 17-14. The Giants had already lost to the Patriots 38-35 in the regular season. The Giants finished the season 10-6, and the Patriots 16-0, before the playoff run. Eli Manning was the game's MVP.
The game is remembered not only for the upset, but for the David Tyree's one-handed helmet catch in the fourth quarter. The receiver leapt over a defender and pinned the ball to his own helmet to secure a 32-yard catch, extending the drive while his team was losing. The drive ended in a touchdown putting the Giants ahead by the final margin.
9. XLIII: 2009
Answer: Pittsburgh Steelers
The Steelers beat the Arizona Cardinals 27-23. The Cardinals came into the game with a 9-7 record, one of the worst in the history of the Super Bowl. The Steelers had a 12-4 record. Receiver Santonio Holmes was named the game's MVP.
Pittsburgh scored at least a field goal in each quarter, while Arizona only scored in the second and fourth quarters, posting most of their points in "garbage time" after the game was seemingly out of reach. The Cardinals scored 16 points in the final quarter, drawing within three points as the game came to a close.
10. XLIV: 2010
Answer: New Orleans Saints
The Saints beat the Indianapolis Colts 31-17 in Drew Brees only Super Bowl victory. Brees was the game's MVP. The Colts jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the first quarter, before Brees and the Saints outscored them 31-7 the rest of the game.
