Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following years saw the formation of Motherwell Football Club?

Answer: 1886

In May 1886, two local teams, Alpha F.C. and Motherwell Glencairn, amalgamated to form Motherwell F.C. The new side's first game resulted in a 3-2 victory over Hamilton Accies. It would be 1913 before the club appeared in their first claret and amber strip, based on the racing colours of Lord Hamilton of Dalzell.
2. Motherwell F.C. won Scotland's top league for the first time in season 1931-32. Which player contributed a record 52 goals during that campaign?

Answer: Willie McFadyen

Between 1926 and 1934 the 'Well finished each season somewhere in the top three positions of the old Division 1. The 1931-32 Championship win was to be the only one by a team other than Celtic or Rangers in a 43 year period (1905-1948).
3. Motherwell beat Dundee 4-0 on 19th April, 1952 to lift the Scottish Cup for the first time. Which former player managed the team to success on that day?

Answer: George Stevenson

Stevenson had played in the title winning side of 1931-32. He had taken over the managerial reigns from John 'Sailor' Hunter, who had held the post from 1911-46. Needless to say, the Steelmen followed their cup triumph with the ignominy of relegation the following season. Stevenson himself left the job in 1955 and was replaced by Bobby Ancell.
4. The Main Stand at Fir Park was built in 1962, with the sale of a top player to Liverpool helping finance the project. Who was he?

Answer: Ian St. John

To meet the cost of the new construction it was inevitable that players would have to move on. Although it is often said that it was St. John's transfer fee that built the stand, the truth is he only brought in around half the required amount. Pat Quinn's switch to Blackpool, some 18 months later, provided the remainder of the funding. Ian St. John returned to manage the club in 1973 and led them into the newly formed Premier League.
5. As time passes, the long-serving player is becoming a thing of the past. All of the following players were Motherwell legends, but which one made the highest number of league appearances for the Steelmen?

Answer: Bobby Ferrier

Bobby Ferrier played 626 league games for the club between 1918 and 1937, scoring 256 goals in that time. Willie Kilmarnock captained the Cup winning side of 1952, which Paton also played in. Kilmarnock gave Motherwell 18 years service, while Paton appeared in the claret and amber for 16 years.

The legendary Joe Wark graced the Fir Park turf from the late 60's to the early 80's...and he knew my father.
6. In the early 1970's Motherwell took part in a British cup competition several times. Which company were the sponsors of this cup?

Answer: Texaco

The first 'Texaco Cup' was competed for in 1970. Motherwell twice reached the semi-finals, beating English sides such as Tottenham Hotspur, Coventry City and Stoke City, who had World Cup winner Gordon Banks in goal. Hearts dumped the 'Well in the 1970 semi, while Norwich City won at the same stage in 1972.
7. Motherwell have suffered relegation many times throughout the years. In most of these instances they have bounced straight back up, but after being demoted in season 1978-79, it took them three attempts to gain promotion. Which manager led the club back to the Premier League?

Answer: Davie Hay

Hynd was in charge when the club went down. Ally McLeod, who led Scotland through the Argentina World Cup debacle of 1978, failed to lift the team's fortunes and it wasn't until his assistant, Davie Hay, took over, that top division status was regained. He left before the new campaign kicked off and former Rangers manager Jock Wallace returned from Leicester City to take control.
8. After a 39 year wait, the Scottish Cup returned to Fir Park thanks to a thrilling 4-3 victory over Dundee United in May, 1991. The win had the added bonus of propelling Motherwell into European competition for the first time in their history. Who provided the opposition in the 'Well's debut tie?

Answer: GKS Katowice

GKS Katowice won the first leg in Poland 2-0. On 2nd October, 1991, Fir Park finally hosted it's first European match. Steve Kirk notched the game's opener, but the Poles equalised in the second half and, despite a late effort from Nick Cusack and a second Kirk strike, Motherwell exited the Cup Winners Cup on the away goals rule.
9. Tommy McLean managed Motherwell between 1984 and 1994. Which club did he leave to become the ninth Fir Park boss in eleven years?

Answer: Morton

Although never the most popular of leaders with fans or players (allegedly!), Tommy McLean brought more success to Motherwell than many managers before or since. He masterminded the defeat of his brother Jim's Dundee United side in the 1991 Scottish Cup Final, gained qualification for Europe twice and achieved third place in the Premier League in his last season in charge.

The third McLean brother, Willie, also managed the Steelmen in the mid 1970's.
10. Football is all about scoring goals. Of the following players, who bagged the most strikes during their time at Fir Park?

Answer: Hugh Ferguson

Hugh Ferguson hit the back of the net 362 times between 1916 and 1925. He then moved on to Cardiff, where he was an F.A. Cup winner. Sadly, he died a few years later in 1930. St. John, Pettigrew and Coyne were all prolific scorers for the club in the 60's, 70's and 90's respectively.
